OK. My friend is telling me that the bad guys are the production companies who pay to have the films made and this "boss syndicate" which he tells me is the government, no? So these companies are getting in bed with the government to pass a new bill basically saying that if you are an artist and can't get work in your such-n-such field then we are not going to pay you as the need does not meet with the expectation. So if there is no film work for you then you do not get money. If there is film work for you then you get a job and get paid. Right? My question is: If these companies didn't have to pay into this fund wouldn't they put this money into other productions so there would be more work?

Are you saying that if I'm a DOP in france and can't get work then, well, the people who do get work pay into a fund from which I can support myself? Whoa!!! Ummm... I'm going to have to get a drink. I'll be right back... :o Ok. So does this pay better than your normal work or what? Can't you get another job(one outside of the film business) to pay the bills during "down time" ? I don't think I'm understanding this correctly, I can't be. I know in the USA there are programs that help old actors and retired film professionals get medical care and stuff like that (paid into by current stars and whatnot) but I've never heard of anything like this. At least in the states. Does this have to do with unions ? Why march against the government? If they pay you guys not to work then, WOW! Is France a socialist state? I think it is. Most Euro countries are these days, no? I'm kind of ignorant about this stuff so no offense meant. But could someone else explain this to me...? Please? Shouldn't france be putting money into other things like the health care system? I know ours sucks to high heaven but didn't like, 5,000 people die in a heat wave a year or two ago in france? Buy some AC for all those old folks...rebuild those burnt down cities and towns. I love art and those trying to keep artist from starving but....WOW....WOW Please educate me, as I think I need it. No offense, but for $265 I could buy myself a whole lotta DVDs and study at home. With soda-pop, and those chocolate covered raisins I like so much. But no popcorn!!! It should be banned from theatres!!! Too damn loud and annoying....

There is a rec'd list on the right hand side of this page that says "shop for cine books here..." click and enjoy! I've read Blain Browns' books and found them quite good. A little expensive ($50) but they are printed on heavy stock with color throughout.

I think Malick is one of the greatest living American film makers today. Great movie all around. In fact, better than those "osacr favorite" pictures. Whatever the highs and lows of this picture, we can all agree that it is top tier material. We are watching an inspired artist at work. Malick is a very interresting figure. His favorite philosopher is Heidegger (?) as is mine, although I can't remember how to spell his name. He actually translated some of his work back in the '70s. Reading works like Being and Time , I feel, gives some insight to Malicks film theory as well as world view through his films. Oh, yeah....The only bad thing about The New World is colin farrel. I really don't think this guy can act. That is to say I feel he just projects suppossed feelings and emotions....? I can't put my finger on it. I've seen some good work of his, Tiger Land, Minority Report, etc., but he is not some great actor that should be working with the talents of Malick!!! (in my humble opinion...) I would go so far to say that Tom Cruise is a better actor!!! Thats right, I said it. Maybe it's just a personal problem....I thought I would be able to get through it like I got through Gere in Heavens Gate. It just didn't happen for me.

Ok. I checked the forums archive first and lots of info on the 2-perf subjuct, but nothing on the telecine process for this... :( Where can it be done...? Will some places do it if I send them a gate. I'm not interested in projection, just telecine to digital format tape. This old techniscope trick sounds perfect for me if only I knew of a solid place that would do the transfer for me. Any in the US? I found one place in Australia, but....that is a long way to go... ;) Thanks for your time, Jonnie

I don't like films about film production, however this film rocks! Robert Yeoman did great work, as usual. To respond to most of the posters: What exactly is "feature material"? Isn't the medium of film big enough for everything...? I hate action films but I'm glad they are around...because film isn't just an artistic venue. It is also an entertainment venue. Love Tarkovsky, hate Bay. Still glad they both made movies.

Go to Texas. I knew A LOT of grads and under grads there. All of them were idiots. ;) Oh, yeah...they have that whole "third coast" thing going there as well. You could either stand out among the rest or join the dogmatic sheep. Wherever you go, go to learn the technical aspects of film making and for god sake learn film history. Just don't let the teachers push you into stuff. Sometimes taking a film course is like taking a Poly-Sci course in the way (some) prof's have a dogmatic view philisophically. I don't think it really matters where you go as long as it offers good tech courses. Remeber that line in "Good Will Hunting". The one about learning as much for $1.50 in late fees at the library...? :D

Thanks...I just bought that book online for $120 !!! Hope I don't get shafted on the film strip...from private seller. The new FULL METAL JACKET book is cool, too. Great behind the scenes photos, fast read. Nothing tech. Modine did well, however.

As regards the dim veiwfinder, http://www.super16inc.com/ has service called "Laserbrighten" that gives a dramatically clearer pic in the viewfinder. 35mm cameras cost $275 for the procedure. This guy is highly rec'd. Check it out.

Different stories require different aspect ratios. And every person will see the same story in a differing way. Kubrick used academy AND he shot 60mm 2.40 (or whatever 2001 was...) he used just about every damn aspect ratio and you wont find one person on this site that can respect themselves if they said, for example, " Barry Lyndon would be better at 2.35." If someone is having trouble figuring out what aspect ratio to use on a project, especially pet projects, then they dont have command of the story in their minds eye. They don't yet "see" it for what it's worth to them. Just my two cents... As for the space movie, I'm only twelve but widescreen in space kicks butt!
