  1. :) however it had a budget of 30 million and made about 30,500,000. to this end it wasn't a resounding success. and, yes, thats foriegn and domestic. BTW it was on 811 screens, and thats just America. its safe to say the expectations on return were higher.... -Jonnie
  2. Malick is hardly pretentious. Business and art make strange bedfellows, however...... Its something to do with luck when an audience can find entertainmant value in a film thats sole purpose is to bring a message that provokes thought to the point the film becomes "successful", as in boxoffice. The New World was a "boxoffice" failure. NOT a singular failure. There is untold lightyears of distance between the two. As far as an art film not necessarily being a good film, duh. No film is inherently good by its "product" definition. Producing a directors cut is anything but irresponsible by studio execs. These "Directors Cut" DVDs far outsell their standard counterparts.
  3. This is one the main problems for me. There are some mods to be made but I've never used 'em. Link below for enlarged and brightened bolex viewfinders. I'd love to hear from anyone who has had this done. http://www.jkcamera.com/Super16.htm
  4. There is one on ebay right now for $6000 U.S. dollars. No magazine, however. Pretty nice camera! This particular joe says he never used it and has no knowledge of film equiptment, so I wouldn't bother with this guy. Keep looking on the net. -Jonnie
  5. Real name is , again, at the bottom of my posts in the "signature" field. It is amazing how many times someone has said that to me in frustration without noticing this...That is why its the "signature" field! Look next time! Mr. Machi, I don't want this to get anymore dumb than it already has become. I apologise for my "humor", no matter how obvious I feel it was. Hence the "J/K" and smiley face. It is possible to understand where you're coming from while also holding my view of Gore, and others, as stated in previous posts. No offense meant. -Jonnie
  6. Umm,...er..... It is a pipe used for the specific purpose of enjoying one of lifes illegal recreations. Think "Just say no!", Matt. -Jonnie
  7. Its electric. There are plenty of sites on the internet about BOLEX. Too many, probably! Here is a link to get you started: http://www.bolex.ch/NEW/?p=2 Hope this helps. Hey, wait a minute! What happened to super8, Mr. Buick? Done turned your back against the small gauge, huh? I see how it is.... :) -Jonnie
  8. Hey. I do get your point. I do. But your analogies are starting to stink. Which makes this discussion more boring. J/K- -Jonnie
  9. Well, at 8 inches long if you can see through the second item then I guess it is just what I said, a piece of the reflex lens viewfinder. Looks like the plus-minus 5 diopter eyepiece is on the non-threaded end. Is this correct? Is there a compensation ring on one end? I had one of these cameras. They are badass little 16mm packages that are capable of very good images. If you are looking to replace some parts ebay usually has a boat-load of Bolex products. Keep it nice, Bolex deserves it! :) -Jonnie
  10. Can't disagree with a thing you said. :) I don't want gore to live squalor! Sheesh is right, gullible is not. The guy makes a point, however. You do not need to take it as dogma, as I do not, to see his point. It is written by a guy who is an obvious republican. You should reread my post , I think. The point is gores verbiage is not cognate with his way of life. I am not so stupid as to think men with his power should show up to any particular place involving government affairs in a less than safe car with "great gas milage" dressed in shorts with polka-dots on them. Nor be deprived of the "utilities" necessary to do a complete job. DUH!!! Your rationalizations are quite cute, however. Remember that word in my post, patrician? Its an attitude. Again, his speech is not cognate with his real life. Period. Funny how you don't mention the oil stock, though. Hmmmm. Maybe you were busy sipping fresh kool-aid? But, honestly, I respect your point of view. :) Seriously, I'm not trying to come of as an ass or something worse. I appreciate your response to my post. B) All in fun dialogue-Jonnie
  11. Saw it today...whole thing this time. http://usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorial...ore-green_x.htm There are no honorable politicians. They want power to force their hand, just like any other man. That is the way it has been and the way it will be. We should shorten the executive term by two years. Al Gore, George Bush, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Et Cetera, are vile incubators of greed and ego. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I'm not trying to be a downer. I vote for the next american idiot every 4 years. The right to choose my favorite idiot is a right I cherish! The continent of Europe is stained with our fathers blood like a rubber stamp proclaiming this human right. Politicians are, no matter their "level" of birth or political schooling, inherently patrician(<-this being the nicest word I could find) Enjoy the $ you make from this steaming pile you call a documentary Mr. Gore. You and President Bush can laugh it up 40,000 feet above the plebans in your steel birds, safe away from the madding crowd.... USA-semper fidelis politicians-semper idem -Jonnie
  12. How big is the item in the second pic? It could be a piece of the viewing system from a Som Berthiot reflex viewing lens used on some nonreflex bolex cameras....? .....Unless we know the demensions it will be tuff. Can you see through it? JHB
  13. I subscribe to many, many websites and email letters during the politcal season. Both "left" and "right". I'm pretty sure I got this from MOVEON.ORG during the last presidential bid. I searched and could not find it with moveon... so maybe I'm mistaken but it was not from this site, whitehouse.org. In any event this "poster" was bundled at the bottom of said letter with other admin peeps in pure characature form. If not moveon then it was some other liberal blog(not associated with the DMC) that sent it to me. Anyhow, it is completely racist and not the least bit funny no matter what side of the political aisle you stand on, hopefully. This is, I think, what matt p. was thinking of when he wrote his "skin color" commentary. It is hard to tell what he is saying sometimes....I actually was shocked when a liberal site sent it to me in a email. 100% fringe movement! Bloggers are crazy!! :o http://www.whitehouse.org/initiatives/post...ondi_whitey.asp I don't really get offended easy, but DAMN...thats some harsh shite! In regards to her job..... Baker, Albright, poop....you need to go way back to find a good secretary of state. Powell could've been awesome if he just said no to the Bush kool-aid. I know he regrets it now...... :( <-Sad-face for you Powell. We could have had a beautiful relationship. Now your proud moderate legacy is in shambles. I still love you and hope we can get together soon some day, Colin. I know we'll have a good time then.... :) -Jonnie Barto
  14. I don't think you'll have any trouble shooting in public in Japan. As a matter of fact, isn't there some stereotype about Japanese people travelling with cameras and taking pictures of everything? Ya, I think so. Never been there before but many friends have and they are a very open community from what I hear, so you shouldn't have any problems unless of course you shoot where there are signs clearly stating not to. I am jealous  I love Japanese culture! Hope you have a great time. Oh, post some footage when you get back.... -Jonnie
  15. I don't know...controversy is where you find it. Or make it... My parents live in mississippi. They are not what you'd call ultra-religious. But there are some very ,very religious people there and over the past years of visiting I've gotten to speak quite openly with more than a few. Surprisingly no one told me I was "wrong" for being atheist. And that carries over to the evolution issue... I was astounded to find people that are card carrying repulican right wingers could also accept the idea of evolution. MS communities are VERY close. Everyone knows everyone elses business. The consensus I got was that while most believe in the creation theory, they were also very accepting of the evolution theory being taught at school. "Responsibly" taught was a key note, however. In other words these people sueing their local school boards over the evolution theory being taught and that it needed to be balanced with the creationist theory in the classroom is an anomoly. Or at best, a fringe of HARDCORE non-denominational people who believe the end of the world is coming every year. You know the types... Just don't bring up abortion or slavery in MS and you're okay. :)
  16. LOL!!! I should have seen that one coming! Walked right into it...
  17. Molars(wisdom teeth), tonsils, the notorious "butt bone", appendix, etc. Why did god put these unuseful and sometimes detrimental parts in us? Or, maybe they are "leftovers" from a bygone era? No. No way. Nothing evolves.....or can it? Quote: (concerning june issue of the "propaganda" mag SCIENCE) I don't know how 'current' is 'current' when you use the term. The process of evolution takes place over countless generations. Thus to ask for 'current' examples in humans and animals, where the life span ranges from a few to 50+ years, is difficult - simlar to asking 'how much has the San Andreas fault moved in the past 5 minutes?' You're not likely to see much of a change in a very short period of time. However, in the world of bacteria where generations can be as short as 20 minutes, evolution has been observed in populations placed under selective pressures for thousands of generations. I would thus point you towards this work as it provides a unique and intriguing look into how evolution works. Punctuated Evolution Caused by Selection of Rare Beneficial Mutations SCIENCE 21 Jun 1996; 272 (5269):1802 (in Reports) Santiago F. Elena, Vaughn S. Cooper, Richard E. Lenski
  18. England is just as backwards. For crying out loud , a black man sued for getting a job he thought he wasn't qaulified for! Why did he apply? So he could do just that. My point is, don't throw rocks in a glass house. Also, you forgot to mention that in America the ACLU is sueing the parents of a 15 year old girl saying that she has the right to sleep with anyone she wants. (it was a 42 year old.) Obviously the parents overstepped their natural borders...! Yes, America is in trouble. But so is your country, my friend. "We" are in trouble. Of course the bottom line is you are %100 correct. I don't know what I'd do without my bible to tell me its wrong to kill or steal, yet alone expounding the "truths" that my sisters in the world are of a "rib"....? Religion is the opiate of the masses, truely. Maybe I'm being a bit rude and I apologize if I did offend anyone. But this "intellegent design" business is a phrase of the far right created to legitimize their "teachings". Again with a previously posted joke: child-" Jesus, why did your dad put dinosaur bones in the Earth?" jesus-" He put them there to test your faith, child." Um, ya. Tested and failed.
  19. I have to politely disagree with you, Richard. :D In America we have every political flavor, they're just overshadowed by the feotid umbrella of the Democrats and Republicans. Both parties are spilling over the brim with the sloth of pigs. It is time for an intellectual revolution in America. Too bad it won't happen...we're too busy dumbing ourselves down. And that goes for the "west" at large. I hope whoever wins the next presidential election in America pulls a big surprise on everyone! When he/she gets to the office they say, "Guess what? Thats right....I'm a TRUE moderate. A people person. Responsible! Sorry to everyone who voted for me thinking I'd pull my party farther in the extreme, it ain't gonna happen." Sacrin? Perhaps. But I like to be simple. Alas, it's not to be. :( I'm going to watch Halloween part 5 now, Robert Draper does a great job considering...bye-bye.
  20. Even after the "quilting" of multiple phone images the resolution is still suprising. Very good, and new, idea for a video to be shot. Kudos to those who did it. Initially I thought it would be the image of a single capture from different angles by different phones. Great idea. That song is annoying and will be with me forever.... I'm guessing something Mac for post. The article mentions it I think....?
  21. Ya, someone would have the "fuzzy math" flu... :P hehehe BTW, is the minute-a-page rule of thumb still a rule of thumb in the industry? I know the guesstimation game isn't business savvy nor smart, but in smaller productions?
  22. I don't get it...sorry. Are you calling the soldiers themselves terrorists? I understand where your earlier points come from, but if this is the case.....well, I think that is unfair, to say the least. You can't blame some 18 year old kid dropped in the middle of hell not to make mistakes. Please leave the kids out of it. The guys who killed that family and the picture takers of abu G. have done enough to abuse the reputations of our soldiers. I don't care if you call W. a terrorist to the world, but I feel for the kids. I'm a little biased on the account that two of my friends are over there... :( Of course if you did not mean that, then, um, disregard.
  23. I'm officially scared now. Thanks.
  24. Mike- Nice post.. Is that the merchant of venice? Or...no. Thats merchant, no? Kemper-What does "BDS" mean?
