  1. actually...post posting, I realize that Wikipaedia does sort of provide this. Sort of. Not the way I'd hoped, but close. Any other links would be helpful, though. :)
  2. Is there an already-existing all-in-one resource that provides (or perhaps a patient contributing member with plenty of spare time to explain, lol): An exhaustive breakdown of the range of SD and HD formats available, from the prosumer to professional level? General information, definitions of, examples from, and pros/cons for each format (miniDV, DVCam, Beta-SP, DigiBeta, HDV, HD, etc). And, of course, comparisions against each other (cost, performance, flexibilty of use, rating the commonly used cameras within each format, etc). A sort of Wikipaedia of video formats, if you will? Gosh, but that would be very helpful :)
  3. > ATW: 18db ATW is automatic tracking white-balance. 18dB is a gain setting. Hnn? Oi vey! Okay...got that wrong (one user button is set to the 18bd gain boost, the other set to color bars, which I guess don't work in the 24P mode on the DVX100, right, so there's one question answered, sort of) ...but the point, if you will, isn't that I idiotically mixed up the cameras auto-user acronyms, but that the USER BUTTONS AREN'T WORKING. nor the TC Mode (DF/NDF -- can't switch, seems weird), nor the headphone volume and I'm not quite sure why.... (and that's really making me feel idiotic) :-P I don't have a copy of the DVX 100 manual to troubleshoot myself (it's a personal rental, and the owner isn't sure what's wrong either, or what to try adjusting in the menu). I'm sure it's something simple, any ideas what?
  4. I am shooting with a rented DVX 100. Being more used to the functionality of the 100A, I am having a few frustrations that I've never encountered before. Any troubleshooting would be appreciated. (Shooting in 24P mode, Rec Run TC...nothing unusual (to my knowledge) about other settings) 1) The headphone audio levels can't be adjusted (the buttons on top of the camera seem to have no effect) 2) I can't toggle between DF and NDF Timecode Mode 3) The 2 User buttons are non-responsive (set to Colorbars and ATW: 18db respectively, neither work when pushed) Thanks for any suggestions :-)
  5. Is it normal, when turning this camera off/on, to cause a break in timecode on the tape? Do you need to use the end search function everytime you change batteries (for example), or does timecode disruption from camera shutdown rarely/never happen? Just curious...having some digitizing issues and wondering what may have caused the problem. Any other troubleshooting ideas?
  6. Thanks for the answers...now I feel humbled, but relieved and slightly less stupid.
  7. If these questions were adressed in another thread, or even another website/forum, please direct me -- if not, I have some questions for y'all about the DVX 100A: Maybe this is due to my untrained eye, as I'm not a professional videographer or engineer...but the whole point with prosumer cameras is that you don't need to be. Or maybe it's the crappy tv I'm using as a tap? Or the lack of detail in the camera EVF/LCD? But at the risk of sounding like a total idiot, I am admitting right now there are some Scene File Settings that don't seem to make ANY DIFFERENCE in the image. Can someone help me out, tell me why that is (maybe this is stuff you only notice when you xfer to film)? Or explain what I should be looking for so I can see the difference? Are the changes *meant* to be THAT subtle? That's fine...I just want to know why I'm not seeing them. For example: Detail Coring (not seeing a change). Skin Tone Detail (diddly squat). Vertical Detail (thin, mid thick...they all look the same!). Knee/Auto Knee (I know I should be seeing some change in the highlight areas, right? But...nope). Also, what is the Marker function (linked to the Zebra bars function, but not sure how)? Thanks :-)
  8. Hey All, I'm trying to compile a list of films that were shot (and theatrically released -- or at least available on video/DVD) in 16mm B&W. So far, my sadly limited list includes: Clerks, Following, She's Gotta Have It, Pi, Go Fish (Were any of Jim Jarmusch or Woody Allen's B&W films shot on 16mm?) Thanks!
