so, i apologize in advance if any of this sounds silly or super base. but, i'm about to shoot a doc in india. we're shooting with the sony EX3 and the canon 5D. we'll be bringing the footage back to the U.S. for all post work, and i have a few questions about this...
1. the first issue we've run into is that in order to shoot under the fluorescent lighting mostly available in people's homes, we'll have to shoot in PAL. -the power's 50hz and the cameras we have won't let us dial in the exact shutter angle we'd need (172.8) to eliminate flicker. we've tested it a few different ways, but shooting PAL is the only fool-proof method we've found. is there any other way to get around this that folks have found?
2. obviously, we'll have to shoot PAL with the 5D as well, and since we can cut it in PAL in final cut, it'll be fine for now. but, we've never gone through this workflow ourselves, and i'm wondering if there's anything else we should know/watch out for since we'll have to convert the picturelock of the film back to NTSC to be able to color-correct and online. is this a fairly simple process? i'm assuming it's been done plenty before, but i want to anticipate any possible problems.
3. since we'll be using 2 cameras with 2 different codecs, we're trying to figure out what (if any) is the standard for converting the footage (of either the EX3 or 5D) to one single codec so that we can edit footage from both in the same timelines and not get slammed with crazy rendering of one or the other. would it be as simple (albeit time-consuming) as converting the EX3 footage to apple prores? or converting the 5D to something else to match the EX3? because it's a doc and we'll have a significant amount of footage, is it more advisable to convert both to a simpler (less-heavy) codec just for our offline edit? and then upres to one standard online codec for both?
i don't know if anyone's run into any/all of these issues before, or if you could refer me somewhere i could get more specific answers. i've been living in the world of blogs, searching for answers, but not having much luck finding ones that address these particular concerns. i would love a little advice/knowledge from folks who've gone through this (or a similar) process before.
