  1. The achievements of Red in this short time is stunning, but I don´t see that Panasonic / Sony etc. will feel the impact anytime soon, also not ARRI. Red in it´s current incarnation is designed as a digital cinematography camera, so it has some features missing that could impact EFP/ENG-areas. But I don´t think that this could be some major, long time hurdle. Sony etc. afterwards will remain as suppliers for tapedecks ( to put Red-footage onto ) and the "boring" infrastructure in the backrooms that Red doesn´t seems to be interested anyway. ARRI is still unbeaten until one of Red´s future cameras is able to rival the flagship 435, I mean 0,1 to 150 fps at full 4K, there´s no portable, onepiece and onboard-recording camera offering this capability. Right now, you are maxed out at 60 fps at 2K with Red, and to be more precise there was no word about framerates over 24 fps - Jackson`s film was a fixed 24 fps one. But when Red delivers something with that specs ( and I´m quite sure they will ) , there won´t be no stopping - it will beat the mos and sound camera lines altogether. YES, I KNOW, there´s still that issue with archiving digital footage that makes a difference, just like lesser / no compression and more latitude... Hi David, I heard that Dalsa is actually going to do something similar - they want to rent Reds from individual owners and rent them out to their customers together with their own supplementing equipment.
  2. Like to add my 2 cents. There are several professionals on dvxuser, too, but the big problem with the "others" is that they´re kind of living in a dream world, until now a bunch of them think they can get away with a bit over than 17.500 $ for their initial packages. I have made my own estimates and think around 70.000 $ will be needed, because next to a camera+lens(es)+storage+batteries+tripod+mattebox+etc. you need a fast computer+big monitor+decent raid to process that wavelet-compressed 4K raw data. BTW, very few are considering that sound is as important ( sometimes even more important ) as the image, but look how many times this is mentioned. Also too many people think about 4K, but really, in the end not even 0.1 % of their Red-projects will be shown at this resolution. When I have one of that cameras I´m happy if I can use HD from time to time, here in Germany it´ll be mainly SD. Right now I´m evaluating super-8 since it´s a very interesting format with a unique look and until the Red One is working at full speed and has it´s initial bugs worked out I´ll be using DV / HDV / 16 & 35mm. There are too many people speculating about the big screen, when their real challenge is to shoot nice movies with interesting stories - I´ll be honest, most of the indie-stuff is not what a bigger audience likes to watch and pay for, same tragedy with student films. Bye, P.
  3. I´m not saying it´s a threat to me, but read the reactions of some pro-film-people on this forum, I won´t call names, but some of them are so fundamentalist in defending film for no obvious reason.
  4. Hi Gavin, I´m very interested in that product, too and await the Red One with a bit of excitement. Regarding your question, I thought about the exact same thing. Here´s what I think why these people behave like this: 1. The technological problems that have / had to be fixed a) It seemed to be impossible to produce a CMOS ( or any ) sensor with 4K resolution that is able to capture up to 60 fps ( 120 fps at 2K ) - please, before you start ranting, that´s what I ( with little knowledge on sensors ) read at several places on the net B) 4K produces insane amounts of data, impossible to be recorded in a portable camera ( solution: wavelet compressed raw data = Red Raw ) c) 4K is way too much data for current computers / NLEs ( Red solves this through Redcine ) d) too much onboard-processing power needed for compression e) too many new technologies in there ( maybe LCOS, OLED etc. ) f) too many revolutionary stuff ( magic focus, redcine etc. ) 2. The timeframe they set to reach their goal a) One year for the product, including the sensor, electronics, software, accessories, one lens and a network of companies for technical support B) It´s targeted to be available within our lifespans, which seems to be impossible 3. The pricing a) It´s too cheap ( since so many people in our industry ( including me ) are very used to premium prices for filmstock, film- and postproduction equipment, so it can´t be good and / or real B) Why does someone like Jim Jannard ( a business-man ) give a camera away virtually for free ( according to the naysayers ) 4. The look a) Red´s images look "rendered" because of the lack of grain B) Film looks better ( why ? ) But I think that quite some of the "acting-to-be-pessimists" are afraid that the Red could be some type of threat to their businesses. Just my 2 Euro-cents P.
  5. Bryan, did you check the site you´ve linked ? That´s a company for magnetic toys.
  6. Mr. Philips, some people on several boards call you a "fake" ( or "fake christian" ? )based on the fact that you are using a, let´s call it strange picture as your avatar, and the unknow connections between you and this firm: http://mpshareware.net/about.html ( your image is linked to this site ), how do you feel about that ? Being called a faker ? I´ll clearly admit that I´m not a "redhead", but I´m very interested if and how this project evolves - and I´ll also admit that a big amount of users on dvxuser have a bizarre connection to Red. But on this forum, it´s exactly the other way around, it´s especially Richard ( Boddington ), you and some other people who have an exaggerated attitude against Red. 1. You think that the company is fake 2. You think that the 4K images look like cgi but you´re unable to tell what exactely the problem is 3. You think that the "break in" was an insider-job or hoax and so on, that´s a bit paranoid, isn´t it ? Where´s the point in it ? If they´re really fake, then time will tell, if you can´t tell what´s wrong with the image, then shut up or wait until you can express it, and if you think the break-in was commited by insiders, you´re no better than these fanboys and should quit with being insulted coz some idiots think sony / panasonic / jvc or santa clause did it. One of the few, highly respectable people on this forum is David Mullen ( as always ) he was the only balanced and wise voice in every thread I´ve followed so far and always made clear, interesting and educated contributions and is always a helpful person. P.
  7. Hi Stephen, that was not a totally serious remark by me ! I mean he ( Phil ) divides everything into film / video and puts the Red into the second one, like it´s a very clear decision, not totally logic to me, that thing seems to be something different. Gruss aus Berlin in die Schweiz ! Priyesh
  8. You people must be very skillfull. There´s only a 2K and now 4K jpeg image on the site and you´re able to say that it looks like video ( or film ). To me they don´t look like video, the images are totally fantastic, now let´s wait for moving images and then make judgements on them. I´m wondering if opinions like Richard´s or Mr. Phillips will ever force Kodak or Fuji to produce even higher-resolution ( lower-grain ) film-stocks and techniques that reduce scratches and generation of dust caused by friction during film-transport in the camera. I know the beauty of grained-black-and-white or colour photos, but in general, that´s something I´d rather get rid off during capture. Priyesh
  9. Following Phil´s logic, a filmcamera must be some sort of old-fashioned video-camera, right ? How do you make the distinction the other way round ? But honestly, I don´t understand the meaning of your statement, Phil. The Dalsa and ( soon ) the Red are / will be cameras that are some kind of hybrid between film and video, the combination of both´s biggest strenghts ( resolution, latitude of film and the immediate feedback of video etc. ). 10. Hey kids, time to brush your teeth and go to bed ! But really, let this thread rest in peace, like the man it was originally dedicated to. P. P.S.: By the way, Mr. Beverly, did you "win" these wars with your left or your right hand ?
  11. Mr. Beverly is always using the word "we", like if he´d won 1st & 2nd world war, lost the Vietnam-war and started a useless killing spree in Iraq. Before I forget it, J.S. Beverly - I can agree to Richard`s overall statement that Steve Irwin´s general behaviour was irresponsible BUT disagree the way Richard expressed his opinion - this is an open forum and quite some people were pissed off. But now I understand, you´re the same kind of person like the POTUS - a black-and-white painter. Yeah, I remember, axis of weasel, freedom-fries, freedom-toast and other silly, childish stupidities, brought to you by the USA, former super-power. I´m in Germany ( not defending / praising this country nor my native over an other one ) and I´d like to know from you canadians ( Richard ? ) who visited the US if the majority of their people behave like this specimen. I thought that was some type of cliché. By the way, still wonder how this thread could shift so far from it´s topic. P.
  12. Hi Richard, To correct you, I´m 100% on your side, only I wouldn´t have used your harsh and offensive words. But you should know that I´m so fed up with mainstream-attitudes, you can´t make statements with a grain of critic nowadays. All of a sudden Irwin is put into the same category like Jacques-Yves Cousteau ( I think that was the "amazing" contribution of wiseacre D.A. Smith ). Just think about what happened if Dian Fossey had handled the gorillas like Irwin handled every living creature ( including his kids ) ? Or if Cousteau had handled sharks and the likes this way ? He´d never turned 87 I think - but I forgot, Cousteau surely must have been a boring guy who never achieved anything. Priyesh
  13. This thread is getting really, really ridiculous. Now I have a good idea how american, canadian and australian people behave over controversy - totally childish and stupid. Richard´s intial statement was totally exaggerated, ok - but the arguments of you other people are getting more and more stupid. I never liked Irwin´s show, too, his over-the-top presentation made it hard for me to stay on the really important thing - the infomation he tried to pass, but that´s my opinion. All of you people who said it´s ok to take risks ( and I read about some really moronic ones here ) - did you ever think about the danger you´re to other people ? How many people get hurt or die because some "risktakers" ( or heros, if you like ) underestimated the potential danger ? Irwin´s totally insane behaviour did include his two little kids - that´s unacceptable. I´m wondering if you "risk-taking-heros" still were proud of your mean and exciting past if you´d killed or seriously injured your wife, child or any close person during some stupid, useless experiment.
