  1. Inventions excited me. New tech excites me. Choices excite me. People with a positive attitude and look to see the upside of things excite me. A better sensor upgrade without having to purchase a whole new camera excites me. Jay
  2. Jim Jannard is a great man who accomplished an amazing thing. I will always be grateful to him and his team. I know there are those who do not agree, and I welcome the opinions of anyone who have similar accomplishments. Otherwise it's just "arm chair quarterbacking". Jay
  3. This was a fluid question when the RED ONE was new, but now that so many accessories are being sold on Ebay, it's an even tougher situation. I'd suggest getting a handle on all the accessories, and how you want to build out the camera, then start hitting the Ebays, blogs and yes even (Don't hit me) Reduser since they are going to move a lot of stuff on there as well. I think there's even a classified section. Jay K I hope this helps!
  4. I think the answer to your question is usually all the above. In order to know the best tool, you are going to have to have a strong working knowlege of it. The RED is a different animal. Everyone will have their own opinions are what they like / don't like. Bottom line: You simply need to learn it for yourself an decide. Jay
  5. Robert, in order to feel "embarrassed" as you put it, they would first have to place some value in the opinions of those who post on here with their various pearls of wisdom. I think it's safe to say, no one at Red feels embarrassed. I'd be willing to even speculate that no one at Red even cares about most opinions on this board. After reading so many disrespectful posts on here covering various subjects, I can see how this would happen. Jay
  6. Well my friend, you are going to get a lot of answers here. Some will tell you they take issue with Jim's marketing stratagy. Some will complain about the 4k sensor not really being 4k, some will complain that people talk like the camera's out when it's not. And finally, some will complain that people are calling it film, and it's not film, that usually destroys the thread when that one comes up. But what you will no longer hear, that you would have heard 8 months ago, is that the camera is fake, and will never work.. You will no longer hear the words "vaporware". One guy on here keeps saying the camera is not out yet.. And he's right (If you don't count Jackson, "Wanted", or the films coming up in a few weeks). So any real opinion about the camera, good or bad, is a bit of speculation. Do what works for you.. If you like the camera, then keep liking it.. You've got a lot of company! Jay
  7. Quoting Jannard on reduser.net RED will be used more on the "Wanted" set as we come out of engineering hold. New cameras leave for Prague tomorrow. Steven Soderbergh has given permission for me to say that he will shoot "The Argentine" and "Guerrilla" on RED. That's assuming we can get him cameras on time! :-) There will be a couple of other announcements as soon as we get permission from the studios. Jim There you go Carl, we certainly would not want to let you down after all this! It' not a flood, but it's a start! Jay
  8. Congrads Rik you just sent another 200 people off to find out exactly why this camera is so worth bitching about. I hope this thread does not upset you as much as you say because to actually GET upset over people writing on their computers would worry me a little.. I would say get up and talk a walk.. Remember, it's just a computer my friend.. As for the camera, think what you will.. In the end it really won't matter much... Will it? Jay
  9. I have to say, being somewhat of a marketing guy, that I think Jim Jannard is a genius.. Someone on here accused another member of possibly sounding like a "shill" for the company because they praised it. Anyone that knows marketing will tell you the best advertisement for an unknown product are those who get all angry and short tempered with it. This reaction actually causes more curioustity for something that is an unknown. I would wager that more interest is created for RED on this forum than the DVX would get on it's best day. The DVX tends to be one-sided and very pro RED.. However, conflict generates more interest. Which leads me to wonder... How many of your nay-sayers are on Jannard's payroll?!!? Every time you guys say "it's NOT revolutionary" you make a first time reader think "Why would they say that?" and then it's off to red.com they go. The very existence of the fighting and debating continues to lift the camera in the public eye. If you are smart enough to stay above the fight and watch from a distance (which I do.... Sometimes :) Then this is a very interesting thing happening here. Jay
  10. Careful David.. I happen to LOVE Pop Tarts. As for those of you that are exciting about the camera. Good for you! Don't listen to these narrow minded folks that seem unhappy that you would all have some fun with a potential new toy. Last I checked we were typing in the "RED" sub forum on this site. You have something to say about RED? Thsi is this place to say it. A prototype will be out in 11 weeks, but I assure you, those people speaking negatively now, will find a whole new batch of bad things to say when they actually see it. If there's one thing I have learned about film makers, it's that they are never wrong. (Yes I know I am sterotyping and not everyone fits that... So if it doesn't apply to you, then feel free to ignore it) Jay
  11. I'm a veggie oil guy myself Jay
  12. Matthew, I think you took his point a little out of context.. I believe he was commenting on a 4k ELECTRONIC film camera.. Not the traditional style. If your point was to say "you don't need to look to video, look at film" I think you may be in the wrong sub-forum for converts. :) As for the camera being special.. Yes I believe that it is. As for origional.. In so much that Star Wars is origional I agree. I mean that SW took hundreds of preexisting styles and elements and combined them to make something new. I think REDs claim to fame (one of them anyway) is that it's attempting to go beyond the current envelope of todays HD standards. I am not saying there are not any 4k cameras out there. I am saying there are not any 4k cameras aimed at the income bracket they are aimed at with as much development and R&D money as they are putting into it As a producer I am very well aware that part of the value of my picture will be based on what it was shot on. A MiniDV movie will pull less than an HD movie, and an HD movie will pull less than a 35mm movie.. I will be curious to see where a movie shot on RED falls. Just my .25 cents
  13. Abe, Those cameras rent for about $100 per day they tend to include batteries, tripod, and some even a monitor. On weekends you can even get a one day rental for two days. So 50 per day. You are looking at 40-80 DAYS of rental before you have saved more buying the camera. And this is assuming you did NOT buy any additional batteries, or a good tripod. How many shorts have you done in the last year? 40 days worth? In two years the cameras you speak of will be old news. CMOS cameras are coming. Owning cameras are fun.. If you have money to burn, then buy a Varicam or a RED when it comes out.. But if you goal is to produce and direct movies responsibly, then start now and don't burn your money on a camera that will never take you into the professional realm not to mention be obsolite in a short period of time. If you intend to get into the industrial realm, shooting talking heads, weddings, etc.. You will work more than 40 days (I hope) Then buying a camera is a good idea, but make sure it's broadcast grade. Jay
  14. Now THAT sir, is a FINE point for discussion. It is a worry of mine as well.. I think most beginners have waited for the "right equipment" before starting a particular project at some point. This is a very dangerous thing to do. Right now I am putting together a commercial and thinking "boy I wish RED was here for this" but never, not even for one second will I WAIT for that camera. I have faith in Jim Jannard and his ability to pull this off.. I also have faith that it will NOT go as planned.. This is the nature of things. I am NOT saying it's a bad idea to wait for this camera under very specific cirsumstances.. But if anyone and I mean ANYONE thinks this camera will make their work better.. You are in for a bad $17k+ surprise. I tell most of my film students who think this way: "Worry about your sound before you worry about your picture". I don't care how good the pic is if the sound sucks.. But that's another forum. I will never sell my SDX900.. And I am excited to get my RED. But my career, both professionally and artistically, will not wait. Jay I think I can say that Jannard himself would agree.
  15. Hey Matthew, Well the truth is that I am a newbie when it comes to forums. I was unaware of the "rep" DVXuser may have in other circles since I do not post on other boards enough to know. In truth I am just getting into the forum stuff. I am happy to hear you did not intend to hurt anyone, perhaps because I am not aware of the past relationships I do not understand things in the corret context. It would be like me walking in right in the middle of "The Empire Strikes Back" when Vader says "No, I am your father".. Not knowing any history I'd be "Cool.. So what's the problem? Why's that kid on the pole so pissed". But if Vader said "I killed your father" then I'd be like... "Dick!" (No I don't really talk or write this way, just playing). I don't agree with some of what you said.. And I do think being kind never hurts, but I agree I don't know everything going on so I will stay out of it.. Besides, I have said my peace on the subject. As for the RED camera, I have one thousand reasons to hope that you are wrong and that they succeed wonderfully. Jay
  16. I don't think it has anything to do with the equipment.. That's just the excuse.. It's about people and how they feel about things.. The camera represents different things to different people. Jay
  17. Matthew, you can write better than I.. I respect you for that.. But there was a method to my madness. Dude some times your opinions are just plain heartless. You hide your passive cruelty behind a sort of "professional air". It pisses me off and I decided to share those emotions with you in a very not-so-political manner. You seem to have found that upsetting.. You should have. I was being a real jerk. Something you should understand well. No I don't have anything against you personally other than I think you can be mean at times. So I guess I do have something against you personally after all!! :) Tell you what... I am sorry.. I am sorry for making my attacks personal, but I just got angry cause you kicked some friends of mine while they were down. When you are in a bar and talking smack about a guy that just got attacked, a lot of people around you will argue and debate or some will agree.. I'm the guy that just walks up to you and punches you in the mouth to make my point, which is, if you can't say something nice, or at least respectful during a painful time, then shut the f*ck up. I know it sounds petty. But I think people on the internet have somehow come to believe that because it's typed, it somehow lacks cruelty, or the ability to hurt others. It doesn't. The things you write about people can cause pain, sorrow, anger, or even tears. I am asking you to please, show people respect when you speak about them. If you don't know what that means, just imagine you are in a bar and there's a jerk like me hiding in the shadows listening to see if you say something that is hurtful of someone else.. If you do, he walks over and belts you.. Trust me if you really believe this, your writing will change drastically! As for the RED camera, I have no loyality to the camera at all.. I've never seen the damn thing. But I respect the people, Graeme, Ted, Jarred, and yeah, Jim. They are pushing the envelope, I love it when people do that, in any technology.. Don't you? As for the forum, it's normal and happens any time there is new technology out there.. Most of the guys over there are cool and excited because the RED team goes to great lenghts to make them feel as if they are a part of the process. The members of that forum, and the reservation holders believe THEY are designing the camera right along side the RED team. That's kind of cool So I am sorry, I will try to be a good boy in the future... As long as you do... Have a wonderful weekend sir Jay
  18. I am very grateful for the feedback... What about equipment? Am I correct in my believe that the equipment list and checking it out is the responsiblility of my gaffer and myself? They constantly tell me that I am wrong about all of this. The shoot was very stressful for everyone involved and they blamed me!! Meanwhile my Gaffer and crew were ready to kill them. They were communicating directly with my Gaffer about lights, equipment, etc. He was NOT happy. How do you set people like this straight? Jay
  19. I have only been a DP for a few years, but I wanted your advice on this: I just recently completed a Music Video for a production company and the process was hell. Up to now, on all of my jobs, the camera package lighting package and camera crew was the responsibility of the Gaffer and myself. We would get everything together, as well as crew and submit it to the producer based on the needs of the shoot for budget approval. In this case however, the producer & director felt that THEY should oversee the equipment as well as our crew. This was an extremely stressful situation. They called the rental houses, and had the equipment picked up with no one from our crew present.. They also handled all communication and hiring of the crew.. This was also stressful because they tried to beat everyone down on rate and I keep my crew at one rate or don't ask them on the set. They are all reasonable and there's no reason to pay them less. I have always been taught that I oversee the tools and crew I am responsible for on set. They believe that that they do.. Speaking with the exec yesterday I told him I have a different definitaion of my job than he does and he came back with "Well this is how it's done in LA"... I do not agree but I want to make sure I am not off base here. Any feedback from the seasoned pros would be helpful. To make matters worse, the director is my best friend, and this issue has seriously damaged our working relationship.. I hope I am not off base here. Jay A. Kelley
  20. Guys leave poor Matthew alone.. He can't help the way he is.. You must treat people like this with love and understanding until medical science can come up with a cure. Jay
  21. I personally think the SI camera is WONDERFUL! I think the RED camera is WONDERFUL! I think any company that attempts to give me a choice in how I do my work is wonderful. Jay
  22. David you are one of the few on here I respect as a professional.. I wanted to say hi before I left. I have been on this board all of a day and that's enough for me! I am sorry if my Email was to broad, I don't have time to name names. People on here spend far too much time being negative and argueing. What I find horrible is that some are not HOPING they succeed. RED proposes a wonderful tool and a great price.. This is good for everyone, people like Jannard move technology forward. Even RED's failure could change things.. Instead this current thread is made up of petty debates and naysayers.. Even a heartless few who call the breakin a "hoax" and use it as an excuse to predict RED's failure. No one has considered that this breakin has hurt and deeply troubled some talented people who are suffereing this morning because of it. I have chatted with you before David, and I believe you to be a cool person, but I do not have time for people that do use their energy to down others and argue. I prefer those with positive attitudes who try hard to support people in all areas of this business. I expect people to show the same kindness and coutesy online as the do in person, when they don't I really don't want to know them in either place. When I want to read about stupidy I look to congress. :) Jay
  23. I had written a reply to this, but realized you guys are being to stupid about all this, there's really no point. Tell you what, we'll talk again in two weeks when the footage is online. Jay
  24. Red will never come to market.. Sigh... You people are not the brightest lights in the room.. That much is clear. Jay
  25. This is my first time on this board. I have read 50 or so posts on the RED camera. In doing so I have read a lot of debate stirred up about RED'S ability to look like 35mm film or lack thereof. Many have stated RED'S inability to look like 35mm is a sign that the camera is less than others. Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to think so many of the great minds involved in this debate would have better things to do. RED is not a replacement, RED is not a miracle, RED is not the "end of film", and to my knowlege no one on the RED team has stated as such. I also find it humorous and of good character that one of RED'S defenders is from Dalsa. I enjoy seeing acts of character from different companies in similar fields. RED'S Comparisons to 35mm are simply done to provide a benchmark we are all familiar with. I think I am safe in saying that 35mm is beautiful. It think it smart to use the best as a benchmark don't you.. I'd hate to see Mr. Jannard say "RED is able to match the best footage from a 3/4" Sony Umatic, or even SUPER 8mm". I will tell you what RED is, RED is a choice. RED is yet another tool in the box for us to use when deciding how to build the next project on our plates. RED will be different than everything out there because everything out there is unique in its own way. It will have strenghts and weaknesses because everything does. We will simply have to decide if RED's strenghts meet our needs, one project at a time. Jim Jannard is fighting a very difficult and very personal battle. Jim fights his own expectations of what the camera should be vs. the camera today's technology will allow him to create. Jim LOVES cameras. All types, all formats. I think I am safe in saying that one of Jim's main motivations for making the camera is that he quite simply WANTS ONE.. He is of the belief that if he makes it well, others will want one as well. I would suggest time would be better spent accepting RED for what it is, and being happy that someone has take the time and money nessesary (A lot of it mind you) to give us all what we need most in our business, another choice. Better in some areas, not so much in others, but a choice nonetheless. Jay A. Kelley www.dreamwelder.com In the interest of disclousure, I am excited about the potential of RED and currently hold reservation #327.
