  1. I didn't mean to say that I don't attempt to learn things to help me in my future. I can build a computer easy, make up a good lighting scheme for any theatre show very well in a short period of time, etc. I have my qualities, I was just saying that in terms of film making, I still have some time to joke around with it, while still learning. If film doesn't work out, I would like to do something as have described that you do, Hal. I admire you. :)
  2. Thanks for the advice! Any film I do from now until I graduate high school is probably gonna be shot with this camera, edited on my pc, and be really low budget. I'm not expecting to make a great movie, I'm doing it because it will be fun to see how my work progresses and how much I can learn on my own, before going to college.
  3. Alrighty, will do. I'm not planning on buying a camera anytime soon, I'm just gonna use my crappy sony handicam I got a few years back for a couple hundred bucks. It's got semi-decent quality and it will be good enough for what I will be doing for a while.
  4. I must agree with david, even though I have very little experience in the field. Just from what I know from my friends, the majority of them would like to be on film rather than stay on theatre. When they perform monologues, which are much more intimate, they can perform them well. To each it's own.
  5. Haha, alright. What I'm trying to say is that I'm not making this to be seen and taken seriously. It's really just to try out some stuff and screw around with friends. That's not to say I won't attempt to do a good job on it, it's just that nobody should expect much. ^__^ I'm only a sophmore in high school. I still have a bit of time to screw around in life.
  6. Yes, I understand what all of you are saying. This is, truthfully, going to be a crappy film with crappy high school actors. I will probably end up not even using some of the "better" actors, mainly because I just want this to be a fun learning experience. Don't expect anything good. :D
  7. Great idea! I will probably end up doing something along those lines. Thanks to both of you!
  8. I'm really just going to do everything basic. I just want to see if this is what I want to put money and time into, so it's just going to be a test run. Getting good actors will not be a problemo, I'm in the drama club here and I can grab a few actors from there. Plus, I know many actors from around the state that wouldn't mind helping out. Like I said, all I need is just a test script. XP Edit: Wow, I sound really cocky! SORRY! All I want out of this is to get some experience in the field. After this shoot, I will pursue a real script and such.
  9. Hello all, my schedule is finally settling down a bit and I want to shoot something. I was wondering if there was a good website/place to find a bunch of basic, beginner scripts to get a feel for the trade. I'll be doing the camera work on a semi-old sony handicam, but it's really just to get some experience, so it won't matter much. I'll be doing the casting, directing, camera work, lighting, and editing and such, I just need the script and later, actors. (Actors will be easy to come by) Also, if there is already a topic on this, please just send it my way. Thank you, Michael Kernan
  10. I'm still a newbie on the camera side of what you need help on, but I can help you out about the computer. You can get a powerhouse machine that will do JUST fine for much cheaper than buying it new, if you check out refurbished computers. I got my computer (2 gigs of ram, intel dual core 2.9, GeForce 6800, etc) for 800 bucks and it runs anything that I put on it just fine. I got mine off of Dell's refurbished line and it works fine and everything. Even if you get it and it doesn't work, they will take care of it (even though Dell generally sucks for service, I haven't had any problems). I hope that helped out a bit.
  11. Wow, thanks for all 3 of your replies! Once my schedule starts settling down a bit, I plan on getting deeper into it... Filming stuff and the like. I'm going to be doing a little documentary for the high school soon, so that will be fun. (Although most of the stuff in it will be inside jokes, it will still be experience) I'd like to think of myself as a people person and I'm generally easy to get along with. I am a good, hard worker and a quick learner... Give me some guidance as to what to do and I will get it done. I think that these aspects will help out in the field. :D Basically, I really want to go to Columbia College Chicago but if the financial part of it is going to be a problem, I will probably go to U of A...
  12. Roger that. :) If I go to Columbia I will go for the more technical side. Quite frankly, I want to be a camera man, not a writer and not really a director. I think that is going to be a handicap in upon itself, because I will have to be on the lookout for good scripts. I'm gonna get a group of my friends to help me with a few films and see how they go.
  13. Thank you so much for that. It's good to get some insider info on the good/bad. I'm good with High stress environments, and I work well under them. And the housing situation just stinks. If I go there, I will stay in the housing for the first year probably and move out... It's just SO expensive for a mediocore living environment. (or so I hear) I plan on reading some books on Cinematography and doing some other stuff to see if I really want to do this as my career. I'd rather buy some expensive books than spend all that money on Columbia (or another film school) and later drop-out.
  14. Thank you very much for the helpful reply! I'm still a few years away from attending college, but I figured I should get some ideas set. And again, I really appreciate the offer for camera PA, I just can't do it. If I could, I would do it in a HEARTBEAT! If you are working on anything during the summer, I would love to help. By then I will have my license and not have to worry about school getting in the way.
  15. HAHA! That gave me a great laugh, good job buddy. The Mississippi thing just tickled me so. It's sad when the best qualities of an entire state include a highly overated statue and a rocket that has gum and graffiti all over it. P.S.- It's Alabama, alcohol is EASY to come by. If I go into my schools bathroom, I can get any alcohol I want. If I go to the local alcoholic beverage store, I can get it easy, even though I am underage. Really easy crap to get. (Not that I would want to get any) That and weed... Ugh. Bunch of redneck drunkards and druggies talking about the deer that got away. ALL. DAY. LONG. <_<
  16. I was born in Chicago and had to move down here because my dad got a local job. I miss the city... And the diversity... And the intellectual capacity... Etc. It's not HORRIBLE here, it's just not a place I would pick to live.
  17. Currently, columbia is high up on my list for college. From what I've seen, they offer great courses at a little bit cheaper prices. I just want to know more info. Post, please, if you know anything about this college, and I mean ANYTHING! Good, bad, admissions, scholarships, finances, room and board, etc! Thank you for your time, Michael
  18. Good luck, Richard! As for you, Chris, I am in about the same position besides the fact I am still in High School. Hope you can find what you are looking for.
  19. Thanks for both of your replies! The problem with starting from the bottom up is that where I live currently, there is NOTHING that would help me. The closest thing I could do is intern at the local news station. That would mean I would have to move out to California or what-not, which I'm ok with, but I just don't know how to start. Brian- Yes, I have taken a look at the book and I plan on buying it as soon as it is out. :D
  20. Very well done. I saw it in the theatres when it first came out and noticed how well done the camera work was, along with the lighting. Very nice, kudos to you.
  21. I quite like the commentary from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" series and the movie, "Serenity" based on the series. The commentary adds just the right amount of humor to information ratio. Very well done, I think. But hey, what do I know?
  22. Before I begin, let me give you some background... Hello, my name is Michael and I am currently a Sophmore in High School. I am very active in the school's drama dept. and I am the head lighting techie, head sound techie, and I help out with whatever else I can. Recently, while thinking of what I want to do with my life, I thought that being a camera man would be fun. That is what I would like to pursue, but, as opposed to many other people, I don't want to later become a director or what not... I can't say that I'm a great writer, nor do I aspire to be one. I really just want to do camera and lighting work. After figuring this much out, I've been doing a bit of investigation on what I need to learn to do such a thing. From what I've read, there are two choices...Go to school and learn the trade, or spend that money that I would use on college to get out in the field and work myself up the ladder. Where I live, the most logical school to go to would be the University of Alabama, but they don't have much of a film dept. What they do have is more of a telecommunications/radio dept, which I think would be rather useless. I've been looking at a few colleges, and the two that stand out the most for me are the Columbia College Chicago and Full Sail. I realize that both of these schools are going to be rather expensive, although I have no clue what tuition is, exactly, for either of them. Basically, I just want to know... Where do I start? What do I do? What should I start doing while still in high school... Also, some "insider" info on the two schools listed would be nice. Just any information you could give me, concerning training AND life as a camera man, would be great. Thank you for your time, Michael Kernan
