    Storage

Hi guys, From my knowledge, unexposed stock can be stored in freezer below -180C for ANY length of time. That's what I've been told on film school by professors. It's because every chemical processes are so slowed, that you can assume, they've already stopped. And once taken out, stock can be used as fresh one. Personally, I store every unexposed stock (both fresh and recans) in freezer, then when I want to use it, I move it to fridge for about a day (12 hours are enough ;) ) Exposed stock I store in fridge, till I can get it developed. Sometime it's been a while (like a month) and I can't see really a difference (in HD telecine). That's my workflow and I've never had any problems
  2. Hi, I need on-board battery for Bolex EL. If you have spare one, or you just know, where I can get one, I´ll be very thankful
  3. Thanks a lot! These information are very useful.
  4. Hi Kip, please, could you describe Cooke regarding - flare, breathing, close focus and sharpness wide open ? And what is its front diameter ? Thanks for information. I should probably upload screen shots of my lenses, too
  5. Hi, I use Zeiss 10-100mm T2 and Angenieux 9,5-57mm T1.8-2.4 H.E.C. They are both very good - stopped down (f4) as good as prime lenses. Zeiss breathes a bit and has got longer minimum focus distance (1.5m). Angenieux has warmer color rendition, has got very good controlled breathing and good minimum focus (0.6m) also it´s usuful for macro. I used to shoot also with Angenieux 12-120mm T2.4, which is good for "old look", but I´d stay away from it for serious work. When you´re buying Angenieux, try to find one with as bigger serial number as possible. Especially 1.4xx.000 series. They are from beggining of 90´s. Are you planning to use it on Super16 or standard ?
  6. Hi, after reading this thread, I´ve decided I want to share with you my experiences of cropping N16. this is it: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=54110
  7. Hi guys, HERE is the short video, I've put together from one bigger project I was shooting a while ago. Sory, it's just 720p quality. I hope I can soon upload 1080p. Footage was telecined at Spirit Datacine from S16 and N16 (same Vision3 250D stock), to HDCAM SR 4:4:4 tape and then saved as ProRes 4444. There wasn't any additional grading applied, only the one at Spirit. I zoomed image in Final Cut 7, just using "scale" function. (I don't know if is the best option) I was shooting with Zeiss 10-100 mk.II zoom (N16 lens) on S16 camera, mostly at f4 - f5.6 And the second one lens used is Angenieux 9,5-57mm HEC T1.8 about f5.6 (I can't remeber exactly). I hope it helps you, folks  Since there's always question regarding image quality, to go either super16 or crop normal16 footage.
  8. Hi guys, I´ve got my old Eclair NPR for sale. - normal 16mm body (CA + C mounts) - perfectone sync motor - both Angenieux and Kinoptik viewfinders - 3x magazine (good, tested) and one spare for parts. - 15mm LWS rods Located in Slovak Republic, Europe. I can send within EU without any problem, to U.S. shipping would be too high, I think. Price won´t be high

    NPR for sale

  10. Hi guys, I want to share my experiences of such work as we do it in central Europe. I use services of Barrandov studios, Prague, Czech Republic. Last time I had 15 min. of Super16, we scanned using Spirit machine. I had good colorist at disposal and could grade every (!) shot. I got stock scanned to HDCAM SR 4:4:4, then saved as Apple ProRes 4:4:4:4 1080p files. HDCAM version is just for backup, I´ve used ProRes in cut. And for all this I´ve paid €115 (that´s about $155), without tape.
  11. Here is pdf original brochure.
  12. Hi guys, I've found out some interesting data I want to share with you :) Well-known german company Denz-Deniz from Munich, has been making Nikon hard front module for ARRI 35/3. They don't advertise it any more, but you can still buy it. Camera don't have to be send to service, user can change front panel on its own, with supplied tools (flange focal distance meter is supplied). Infinity focus should be maintained (but this I don't know for sure  ) Price is €3950,-
  13. I know, I know. I just wanted to say, although Eclair's are great cameras, built like a tank and reliable (actually I own one NPR, which has been used a lot during all those years and it's still working great), Aaton are newer, quiter, lighter and so better cameras. In these days prices of 16mm equipment are so low, you can buy whatever camera you want :) even Super16 camera costs only about €2000 now ;) So buying one GOOD camera is wiser that buying one CHEAP for a while. It's lifetime investment (because than, no-one would buy it from you any more :D ) it's just mine point of view :)
  14. Hi guys, I want to use Zeiss Compact Primes in PL mount on my Arrifles SR1 (with PL mount of course), but I'd like to know if is it possible to do it, since with many large barrel lenses on SR's you hit viewfinder elbow and can't attached them. I've already tried ELITE 35mm lenses, RED lightweight zooms and RED pro primes, but with bad conclusion. Here is original statement Zeiss has given to me: "One of our customers uses the CP.2 lenses on an ARRIFLEX 16 SR3 without any problems." Has it tried anyone here ?? Thanks for your help :)
  15. Hi, Go with either Aaton LTR 54 or Arri SR1/2 LTRs are much quiter, better for hand-holding and also there are plenty of mount adapters (to Nikon, Cameflex, Arri bayonet) so you've got much more possibilities of lenses. But theis support rods and handgrip (and how you can't use BOTH of them in same time) are pain in the ass! SRs are great cameras, they've got better viewfinder (hot-swapable ground glass, and brighter image) and magazines that are easier to load. Try to find one with PL mount conversion (but that would be hard in N16), so you can use more lenses ;) Forget about Eclairs although they're great cameras, they're already out-dated now. You'll got problems with service and spare parts. Buy one good zoom lens, and you don't have to worry any more. My favourite for N16 are: - Angenieux 9.5-57 HEC version (good close focus for zoom - 0.6m, and virtually no breathing!) - Zeiss 10-100mm T2 (breathes a lot, and close focus 1.5m but you know, - it's ZEISS :) )
  16. Hi, I own one mk.2 as I remeber it right, the most important difference between mk.2 and 3 versions, is mk.3 has got higher ISO sensitivity for light meter. Something like ASA 1600. Mine mk.2 has got only ASA 630. But I've never got any problem with that, since there aren't any stock with such a high EI rating. If you're interesting in buying one, I'd rather think about to go either Super16 or Normal16 way (and also subsequent lenses...) and then overall condition of particular camera. All in all I can say, Bolex EL is a great camera, great piece of gear. Now I've moved to Arri SR and Aaton LTR cameras (so my Bolex EL N16 kit is for sale, btw ;) ), but I still can't say EL is worst from them. Especially (very good) built-in light meter is really handy in documentary style shooting. And one last thing - are you planning to shoot 100' or 400' reels ? (with appropriate bolex magazine).
  17. Hi, I'm selling my Bolex in this forum at the moment, so maybe you'll be interested.
  18. I've just sent you email, to adress listed in that web. Thanks.

  20. Hi Frank, I want to ask you some question about this Hocus Focus (not PRO version) and I'll be glad if you answer  how reliable is whole unit? have you got any problems in the field? It's written that it's not silent, so how big deal is it when shooting sync sound ? (I mean in profesional productions) How strong is motor? I know it's not for cinema lenses, but one guy told me he was pulling with it Cooke S4 prime lenses without any problem. and the most important - how it manages lenses with long focus throw (like 300 degrees) when it turns only 180 degrees ? I know gear ring is really huge, but i'd like to know how is it working in real world. Thanks for answer ;)
