  1. Hey! Anyone still using their Northlight scanners? I have a Northlight 1 machine that I bought several years back, but never installed - until now. I've got it up and running and things seems to work fine. I got the whole thing with 35m and 16mm + Lamar airflow and stuff (see @filmtek.no on insta for pictures). Will use it for 35mm 4K and 6K scans. It's so slow, but that's cool. I run a small facility and I can do other assignments (or sleep) while the 35mm films are scanned. I was wondering if any current and/or previous users of the machines would be willing to share some wisdom? Ie, right now I'm trying to figure out how to frame the image correctly vertically. Racking up and down doesn't seem to do the trick and I wonder if perhaps I need to do some config changes? Ideally I would want to overscan it also a bit and include the optical track on prints (to be extracted with AEO light). Also, how would I go about if I want to scan a whole roll where I don't know number of frames? Ideally I would like to scan from start to end and possibly have the scanner turn off when finished. Would that be doable? Thanks and best regards, Andreas
  2. I can scan 9.5mm at 2.7K resolution. Currently working on a pre 1930 project for a customer which consists of about 900m of film. Please feel free to contact me at www.filmtek.no (located in Norway). Best, Andreas
  3. Yes I have. LED illumination is something we would go for anyway (diffused). I like the fact that linescan cameras are very fast, full rez (no bayer), can do more vertical resolution and outputting the correct aspect ration. However, there is always the risk (or problem) with image compression.
  4. Cool. We've been looking into retrofitting FDL-60/90/Quadras with a 4K linescan camera and new LEDs++. The pricetag will be close to $50K very quickly with software development and so on. Any idea if there exist open source or similare software that someone would share for linescan / framegrabbers applications for filmscanning?
  5. Lasse, you must surely be Norwegian? :) Awesome work! Keep it up! /Andreas
  6. This happened the only week of the year when I was offline on vacation. Anyways, it has been temporarily restored and fixed now and I will look further into what happened. No data has been lost. /Andreas
  7. There are several places in Sweden that offers excellent transfer of 16mm films. There are a couple listed here: http://tig.colorist.org/wiki/FacilityTable I personally own and use both the Beaulieu 4008zmII Super8 camera and the Krasnogorsk K3 16mm camera. Both are great cameras for their use. The 4008 is the best (?) Super8 camera around (in my opinion) while the K3 is a nice starter camera. Beware of light leakage if you try timelapse shots with a K3. The R16 is a nice camera, allthough I haven't used one myself. If I were you I'd go for a Beaulieu camera and the main reason why you would want to do that is because you have the best Beaulieu serviceman living in Stockholm, Sweden: Björn Andersson (Swebaco Filmkonsult). Check him up in the Yellowpages and ask if he has a refurbished camera for sale. I bet he has. About telecine and filmtransfer. As Ian says, you pretty much get what you pay for. I'd personally avoid all kinds of home/semi-pro companies offering transfer to video services using projectors in any way. The Flashscan machines are OK, but one of our telecine machines (FDL-60) that is over 30 years old gives better pictures than the Flashscan8 and even better than the FlashscanHD when we upconverted the output to HD. That says something about imagequality of professional telecine machines. Newer machines would ofcourse give you better images. Here are a few things that professional telecine machines does better: sharpness/details, dynamic range, colorimitry, image stability, safe filmtransport and more. Good luck! I'd go for a Beaulieu (heck - even only because of the name! :D ) Best regards, Andreas Wideroe --- Norsk Smalfilm AS <post@smalfilm.no> http://www.smalfilm.no Filmshooting | Com - http://www.filmshooting.com
