  1. They're only making 2000. I bet they all go quick. I'm waiting to hear anything soon.
  2. What about the costs of digital cinema post workflow, which wasn't mentioned, vs telecine costs? Which was mentioned. I think the S16 had so much more depth, that alone is worth it. Great film!
  3. I would start with some B&W Tri-X reversal. If you have a projector, or happen to pick one up? Starting with projecting and splicing is the cheapest and most rewarding way to go. Working with negative requires a scan that costs extra, best to have some hands on experience first. Color reversal is coming out in the fall, if all goes well.
  4. It depends a lot on your tools and taste. I use the free version of Resolve and would recommend it. It's good to start with contrast before you make any color changes. The highlights are a bit harsh on their vests in the last image.
  5. It's the long awaited helmet cam, in which most people have believed all visual content has always been produced.
  6. That's odd, I was thinking this lab would also support the super 8 program. All of that has been slated to go off in May, with film processing and scanning packages.
  7. Any news? Did anyone in NYC get to see it?
  8. I'm excited about this idea, I saved all of my copies of Smallformat. Great magazine, beautiful gear illistrations.
  9. Thanks Pav, I'm eying some lenses for the new Kodak S8, which comes with a 6mm Ricoh. I'm looking at 12mm to start and maybe some longer lengths later. Anticipating those lenses I mentioned will be much sharper than most S8 fixed zooms.
  10. I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea on the quality of new consumerish C-mount primes like Computar, Kowa, Fujinon, or Ricoh? How do they compare to older primes like Angenieux, Wollensak, Kern, Switar? The BMPC people have been buying up a lot of the old ones, they want $300 and up for most of them now. The new ones sell between $100-$300.
  11. Kodachrome was nice and stays nice, but I agree the latest look of 100D was suppurior. WhIle they overlapped as left overs and custom loads, K40 was looking bland and dark by comparison. Maybe Kodachrome stock and its processing weren't at its prime in the end either. Nor was it living up to its Kodachrome II predecessor. I'm all in foyer of Ektachrome coming back, I only hope they can improve the sharpness.
  12. D is for daylight and T is for tungsten. On tungsten setting, it will rate at 400ASA. If you set on daylight, the 85 filter will come in, and be rated at 250ASA, still 1/3rd over in daylight.
  13. You will be over exposing by 1/3rd stop. Slightly over exposing color neg film will add density, which will make the colors pop a little more and even tighten grain a little. Although you want to actually go at least 2/3rds over to achieve that. Point being rating it at 400ASA will do more good than bad. You want to avoid under exposing instead when it comes to color negative. I've never owned that camera, but pretty sure you can set your own f stops manually.. should you want to rate it at box speed or over expose
  14. These days the GPU card is a very important factor, with 4GB almost the minimum requirements for worklng with 4K, and even DaVinci Resolve since it's GPU dependent. A decent i7 processor with 32gb ram will be fine with a fast disc array and decent GPU card. I Built my Windows machine in 2010 and still using it to capture uncompressed 1080P frames of film at 10-15fps. It has an i5 650 3.2Ghrz with a 500GB system drive and 1 TB RAID drive, 4GB MSI 1070, still running Windows 7. It still runs like a tank, but will need to build a new one if I ever go up to 2K or 4K work. But due to compatibility issues, I can't upgrade past Resolve 12.0 and if i update any hardware at this point, i'll have to replace everything.
  15. I really like look of this video, colors really pop with the added density. 500D was a stock I've always wanted but was never able to get a hold of any. Fuji was real sticky about selling MP film to independents if i recall. I want it mainly for the speed, where 250D and 7219 @ 320 daylight filtered are always on the edge for me.. daylight interiors or even dusk. I stay away from push processing because the costs add up, but getting away from beam splitters may help soon.
  16. If you don't order a prep with your processing, some labs skip the leader all together on color negative now days.
  17. Looks pretty rock steady and sharp. Have you tried any audio recording and sync?
  18. I think they made at least 50 cameras, but no one has made anything with it except for a few tests it seems? Has anyone put this camera to good use yet? It has audio but no sound films posted. The specs now say "timelapse capability" so maybe they updated the firmware?
  19. The only thing in this world that goes down in price over time is technology. As a DIY shooter (like almost all S8 shooters) the question isn't really about resolution, but do the costs outweigh the benefits? For me to upgrade my equipment from 1080P to 2K, the answer is no. I'll wait for the tech to get cheaper, but by then i'm sure 8K will be all the rage. I'm content with a 1080P S8 image and more focused on post scan processing, because that's where your image really counts.
  20. If you add an external filter, the internal meter will compensate for the light loss. I usually try and stop down the 1.3rd in daylight, just because I prefer my B&W a little richer. I'm not sure what camera you are using but the Canon autozoom silent models have manual exposure control, the XLS sound models also include a exposure compensation dial, + or - 1/3 increments to a full stop either way. The new Super 8 cameras coming out this year will have ASA settings for all speeds. When it comes to swapping carts or storing exposed carts, I put directly into a zip lock from the camera to avoid dust and dirt from infiltration the cart. I use freezer bags for fridge or freezer storage, open or sealed. Just make sure they're not full of static.
  21. I would have no interest. I like playing musical audio if projecting. I'm way more into the new Kodak sound camera with crystal sync and SD. If I were to edit film with sync dialogue, NLE is the only feasible option.
  22. I thought the same tbing, when they were showing the flicker by design in the viewfinder when the camera runs. Based on the video, my Canon 814XLS seems quieter.
  23. I really liked the look of most of your shots. But I would agree with the others that the stability rocking image was too distracting. Also felt it needs to be cut down a bit.
  24. You would need to find AR lenses from the non reflex H16's and those are not going for cheap. Wish I still had my old batch, I have all rx lenses now. 16mm is the widest AR prime I believe. Alex has a good point, it would be nice to have a good lens partner.
  25. I wish they would offer a zoom lens as well in the $2K limited package, If not, it be nice to see one sold separately to go with this camera. I feel like trying to find a good zoom for this camera, or other compatible lenses is easier said than done. All the classic C-mount lenses have gone through the roof in the last 5 yrs or more. Also, I have no experience shopping and using lenses for S8mm frames, only 16mm. If I find a 7-70mm c-mount zoom, if one even exists, will it just be a bidding war? I wouldn't think a 12-120mm would be a good idea.
