  1. I still plan to buy and shoot whatever Ferrania comes out with. It will be another choice with it's own look, different film stocks with different looks make film making better. I'm hoping Kodak will give us a 40ASA daylight Ektachrome, and maybe a 160T
  2. I was hoping to pay no more than $1200, but I'm not surprised with 2K. I'm not against buying it, however if the consumer models still have crystal sync and max gate at $400 or $500, I'll wait and take 2 little ones. I'D like to see 54fps, single frame/itervals, open shutter options, and variable shutter speeds tied into the $1500 price difference. Aside from the modern updates that should be on both models, the "limited edition" is very basic on features so far.
  3. My expectations about the story line wren't all that high going in. I was a fan/kid at the 77 original, save the princess, blow up the castle plot. The characters had chemistry and we were emotionally invested in them. The new movie trying to feed us emotional scenes, and political structures. The action were where it was at for me, and I thought they did a good job with the throwbacks and tie in's to the original. They even pulled original 1977 unseen footage from the vault for the battle scenes. I saw it digitally projected and thought some scenes looked too videoish in spots.
  4. Here's the second clip if anyone hasn't seen it. Looks better
  5. I agree, every camera out there is a total gamble at this point. In the last 1-3 years I spent $200 on a Nizo with a bad meter. Another friend spend $800 on a Canon 1014 xls that didn't work. Yet another friend of mine spent $400 on a Nizo 801 to try the format, camera was faulty, so wasted hundreds more on film and processing... then spent a few more hundred getting it fixed and that didn't work. I think the price is right, since you can easily spend that much on the format and end up with nothing.
  6. If they were going to go all the way, it would have to be a DS8 max gate and well perfed stocks to go with it. This camera is basically a new, updated version of your typical S8 camera, at a fair price given the rate of inflation. You get the dependability of a new camera, C-mount lens option, max gate, crystal sync frame rates, and on board audio record options/outs. I think we'll at least see a good improvement in stability vs an old camera.
  7. I thinks it's because some people in the "business" tend to over think and over analyze the simplest and most flawed of film formats.
  8. As disappointing as it looks, i'm more concerned as to what I can do with it once the final product comes out. I wasn't expecting rock solid registration with this camera, since it's barely possible with the Logmar and this one just uses the plastic plate. All things considered, the cameras registration itself may be about as good as I could hope for with Super 8. The camera is already over due without a word and everyone is yelling for the new camera on all their other consumer promotions. With probably another 5-6 months until release, maybe they just eeked something out with a working prototype. It's a crap sample unfortunately, but at least we know they have one running. Still needs a max gate and some crystal sync audio and I'll take care of the rest on my end.
  9. Same here, I have about 5 400ft from the last 4 years, of just my kids stored on color neg and TriX. I feel comfortable knowing I'll have that footage forever. I have little faith that i'll be able to access all the cell phone footage 20 years from now.
  10. Working with analog frames gives you mechanical control over the images you capture, and while some S8 cameras are point and shoot, others give you more control than any other format, film or digital. Here's some footage I shot for a music video, on the street and on the stage. The idea was to make something dreamy any psychedelic. Some of it planned, some of it spontaneous, but every frame carefully calculated in terms of exposure, frame rate, exposure time, and post editing techniques. There's no one reason I shot this on S8. It's a combination of all the reasons, a game of it's own.
  11. Prepaid processing for Kodachrome was just over $3 until 2004. If I remember 1 roll with processing and mailing was $13.50. Right now 1 roll of S8 from Kodak is $25.96 and at least $17 for processing. So your talking $30 more per cartridge today... not to mention the costs of scanning which weren't required with Kodachrome. I don't it's merely the price of silver that is responsible for a 200% increase per roll. Yet Super 8 has persisted and gained popularity even though it's gotten more difficult and expensive to work with. I don't think they should have a problem bringing film/lab costs down a little. Everything they're doing makes perfect sense to me right now. Even the idea of growing new film makers in larger formats makes sense. A good portion of S8 users that i'm aware of are not just pointing and shooting on auto pilot. Many become masters of the modality and learn to shoot larger formats as well. Take me for example, I'd be willing to bet that my style of S8 shooting goes much more in depth than basic 35mm shooting. 35mm commercial shoots stick to basic mechanics and strict rules. Any interesting concept I've seen represented commercially in 35mm over the last 10 years had already been done in the S8 art scene. Once the S8 cart or 35mm spool has been loaded, your working with the same emulsions, physics and dynamics. Good Super 8 cameras have much more mechanical ability than most 35mm cameras. If you ask me, 35mm has taken more lessons from Super 8 film in recent years.
  12. I would highly agree that K40 coming back is a delusional idea, and personally find E6 and V3 films to be way better. However the cry for K40's return or a new reversal film has been a pretty loud cry aimed at Kodak since E100D went away. Therefor I'm giving 60/40 odds that this promo may be a reality next year. Kodak tried to sweep it under the rug as a typo, but I find it unlikely.
  13. Well your contradicting my point, because Kodak is obviously bringing back the prepaid processing, thus eliminating the current hurdles of finding a lab, shipping costs, higher lab costs ect... The new promotion is providing a similar or possibly better program then when I started 15 years ago.
  14. Super 8 is, was, and always will be a DIY format for the most part. Sometimes it's used commercially to emphasize or emulate just that, however not enough to suggest a "professional" super 8 industry dictating any standard of expectations. It's aimed at the large number of people shooting small amounts of S8 film for what it is, because they like it. Aside from the fact that most cameras impose a risk, the workflow has cumbersome hurdles that digital video does not, it's expensive... Yet a lot of people are still shooting it because they like it. The idea is that all of the people who like it and want to shoot it, but do not because of the hurdles, will now shoot it once those hurdles are alleviated. I've met few DIY people over the years that don't want to shoot super 8. The format is already profitable for Kodak on it's own, but will also be crucial inspiring people into larger formats. A Canon 512XL and K40 pre-paid mailers are all it took for me to learn more.
  15. As main stream this whole promo may appear, it will still add up to a big fat world wide niche. I have newbies sending me 1-4 rolls of film to scan all the time, just by word of mouth, from all over the West. I get the impression that most of them have at least been experimenting with digital video and NLE workflows in some capacity, and the contents of their footage usually suggests a good effort when it comes to test driving film. I have a feeling the S8 camera is not for people who are constantly tossing one thing over their shoulder for the next new thing, that's who the new phone is for. There are a lot of people out there who shoot HD but dabble in S8 when they can, knowing the hurdles and price of admission. If we all need to endure another 6-8 months of secrecy, the rumors of new reversal films and new projectors better be true.
  16. I'm sure Kodak is feeling the heat. Their holiday promotions for batteries and light bulbs have been met with nothing but backlash and requests for new camera and film packages. No surprise there. Keep hammering them, Not having this ready by Christmas seems un-wise. Not sure how much longer I can hold onto the money I have set aside for it.
  17. I love this show, only 4 episodes in, but knew there was no way it wasn't film... it looks amazing!!! When I looked it up on IMDB, it has EXR 50D listed? Good choice, but means Kodak must have made a special run?
  18. It looks under-exposed about 2/3rds. Try bringing up the Gamma and some gain and go down with the Lift
  19. I'm going to wait for Vision3 50 Reversal with pre-paid processing  When the new camera and all of it's untold goodies come out.
  20. Kodak is selling it for $26 per roll. At least that's been the base price for stock over the last year, No one knows what the packages will cost yet. There may even be a new 50ASA reversal film for all we know.
  21. I've always wanted to try this service, but too far away. I think S8 print services of the Vision negatives in the US would be the best middle ground option. The one example of S8 200T I saw projected looked really nice, a lot less grainy than a telecine. Here's Kodak's response to the box pic on FB, "That was just a design prototype. Apologies for the misleading design!" So the designer had wishful thinking ...or it's a leak? I don't really see how they can ignore the endless plea for reversal, Pretty sure they have more surprises in store to go with the new camera.
  22. I don't think it's a mistake. On who's part? I've never successfully explained the concept of negative and reversal film to a non film maker or non film photographer. It just doesn't seem like a realistic mishap. I wouldn't be surprised if they just boasted while oblivious to Kodak's out dated secrecy campaign. Since all Kodak sees on any of it's social feeds are cry's for another reversal film or Kodachrome to come back. You can't replace reversal and Kodak is going all in on film, with the new camera and promo. They may offer a single daylight reversal with a prepaid mailer for newbies, just like the k40 days. The idea of a Vision3 reversal is insane! It will be finer grain than anything else, i'm guessing more scanner friendly... entirely new territory for MP reversal film none the less. The only other reversal stock I can think of that wasn't based from the still format line was Ektachrome VNF? The new Ektar 100 still film was derived from Vison3 I believe, real nice colors, finest grain film ever. A new reversal at half the speed could have some very tight grain and incredible colors.
  23. The Irony of this 7 year old thread is that 16mm is still alive but music videos are dead. I blame digital video.
  24. Every once and a while the meter will go out on my Nizo 481 Macro... but comes back into play if I give the left side of the camera a couple of light taps.
  25. Nice still- did you try your meter with fresh batteries yet?
