  1. When I placed my Super 8 order today, I asked about 100ft of 100D, was told its only available in 200ft A-minima, or 400ft spools. I want to stick with reversals to start off and test whatever camera i get. I'm most curious to and excited to shoot the 100D.
  2. I've been looking into 16mm cams to start off with, but my concern is finding spools that are compatable with an R16 or Bolex.. seems like i have a choice to use 100ft or 200ft mag, but Kodak does not sell 200ft spools, and some films only sell 400ft spools (100D for example). are there 400ft mags available for these cams?
  3. Flying Spot will transfer super 8 to HD. I saw a sample of some 7217 and it was nice.
  4. I have been watching 16mm cameras and a Scoopic went for more than $2000 the other day. but it is still true that you can find a reg 16 camera for less than $500. I've been looking to find a decent R16 to wet my beak into 16mm with. I'd say the major advantage for S-8 (at least in my experience) is quality DIY telecine, viewing and splicing equipment, projectors, quality lenses and features available. If i move to 16mm, i will be more dependant on expensive transfers.. in which i hold for special occasions with negetives in S-8. once i filnd a decent 16mm cam, i will dable with reversals for projection visuals, but will not have the freedom to upload, edit, sound sync my films as easily and cheaply as i can with S-8.. not to mention the quality i'm able to squeeze from the format with the best equipment out there at cheap prices. if i could do the same with 16, i would in a second.. but the cost of retooling what i have now but in 16mm would be 5 fold. I speak as an amature enthusiast with a full time day job. but will agree it is true that 16mm can be economically the same when comparing raw stock and high end telecine.. and much more appropriate for professional production.. but not as easy of a launch pad for a DIY film maker.
  5. I think that having an S-8 camera, or five S-8 cameras.. is the barrier between S-8 and S-16. you can easily pay up to 20K plus for a S-16 cam, or $400 a day to rent a good one.. or you can own a top end S-8 with lots of features with that $400. It's good to cut your teeth by using whats most accessable and affordable.. usually the case when going from non film maker to film maker. Not everyone will get into motion picture film by jumping straight in with heavy expenses. I'm not trying to justify a 200ft cart, nor expect to see one come back.. but i will say that S-8 has a lot of potential to promote experimental film makers to 16mm. I am also very greatful with what is available in S-8.. hope it keeps progressing. When i progress to 16mm it won't be a crash and burn, but a smooth and exciting transition.. and I will have Super 8 to thank.
  6. Yes I have the DVD. I have loaned it to a few friends who also liked it.
  7. Good film, and good luck. wish i could be in Calgary that weekend. is the girl from the movie going to be there
  8. 200ft carts would be awsome. thats 10 full minutes at 24fps. the 400ft mag is too bulky, i have no need for 20 minutes loaded either. a ten minute mag is perfect for portability, filming live performances, or interviews. i would get a top loading camera in a second if 200ft mages came back :D
  9. your first was probably out of focus.. that will "appear" grainier
  10. Exactly! the best is good film work and projecting, or Flying Spot with negs. freeze frame digitized stills on the net don't do much justice.
  11. Do all R16's accept magazines? are the mags hard to find?
  12. I'll try posting a still here of some S-8 V2 500T. the guy in this shot is in motion.. the real time is very sharp.
  13. I will be coming back from Flying Spot next week with some V2 500T night shots, under street lights.. i'm hoping for the best. so far i've shot 30-40 carts under stage lights with stunning results. a few neon exteriors with the same great results.
  14. You can order straight from Kodak.. 1-800-621-3456. process and prep at Forde Labs in Seattle, request telecine from Flying Spot.. they send it to Flying Spot when processed.. FS sends it back to you. be sure to include a good mini DV tape to send along.
  15. I haven't used them, but Pro8mm has a bad rap for poor telecine.. and they are using the old vision stocks. if you use a good lense, Kodak V2, and Flying Spot.. you will be impressed that it was S-8 you shot. i have been blown away since i started using the new negs with FS.
  16. here's a still frame of V2 500T Super 8, transferred at Flying Spot. http://www.8mm.filmshooting.com/scripts/ga...PDXPop_001_0003
  17. It depends on where you have it transferred, their equipment. some places use older Ranks. if you want the best go with higher end like Flying Spot. the only drawback to the color negs is the cost of telecine. the new V2500T has very decent grain for a film that fast. K-40 will transfer better of course because of its low speed/finer grain. but I would rarely use a 200 or 500 speed film in a case where K-40 will expose.
  18. He asked for a sample so i gave him what i could.. but yeah, the plate will eliminate any breathing, jitter, scratching that may occur. its benifits are most noticable at 54fps, gives rock solid, sharp images in slomo.
  19. Don't know about posting pics here yet, but here's a link to a forum with one of my pressure plate stills.. hope it works. http://www.8mm.filmshooting.com/scripts/ga...tII_0001?full=1
  20. It gives a sharp image, fewer scratches. really improves sharpness and smoothness on high frame rates.
  21. Anyone know if Kodak intends to release the new 100T in S-8? I have been getting great results with the 200 & 500T.. just watched a Demo DVD that features all the Vision 2 films, the 100T looks great in daylight. finer grain than the faster negs in S-8, which may yield better DIY telecine.
  22. I've been using Forde for a while on all the non K-40 S8 stocks. I agree with Eric on their quality. they do a great job prepping for telecine on the negetives. from there, they will send it over to Flying Spot.. they have been giving amazing results with S8 7218, 7217.
