  1. Just wanted to chime back in and mention that I've written letters of protest to all parties involved in this butchery. I'm not american, but I thought Slick Willie won the popular vote. God save us from Putin.
  2. Matt: I fail to see how the term "fascist" means "Right-Winger." For example, Hitler was a leftist fascist-- national socialism, anyone? It seems a bit egocentric to assume that repubs have a patent on censorship. And to call Clinton the "liberal's favorite president is nearsighted. Give Christopher Hitchens a read sometime to see what the left thinks about old Bill Jeff. And what is the exact definition of the term liberal? 'Tis a damn shame that this is the only copy available, but one can only write a letter that will probably go unopened. - Regards
  3. I'm trying to nail down some info on Polanski's debut film, Knife in the Water. If anyone has any information regarding technical aspects of this film, contribution would be appreciated. I've tried to google it, but not much info comes up regarding types of stock used, types of camera. Even if it was 16 or 35. I'd go with the former, probably.
  4. I watched this film today, and, I must say, I quite enjoyed it. Is it just me, or were parts of this shot in S16?
  5. While still in film school, I was shooting a young woman's thesis project. One of the scenes was shot with the camera quite close to one of the actor's faces, and, somehow, she got so caught up in it that she slammed into it and broke her nose. I couldn't stop laughing. Never laugh...unless the director laughs first.
  6. Hey, Matt: You're 100% correct about those Blockbuster people. But, this is the only copy available in the U.S. There is only an edited copy. And, regarding my remarks on the MPAA, I do think that their views on this matter are a bit childish, but, like all things, its subjective. Actually, I expected this thread to go unnoticed. I'm a bit suprised.
  7. I was fortunate enough to catch Young Adam in the theatres on its uncut limited release. I quite enjoyed it. I just purchased the DVD this morning, and, was quite disturbed to find that the first sex scene between Tilda Swinton and Ewan McGregor was butchered. The scene, shot in near darkness, shows Ewan, in a medium shot, giving oral pleasure to Ms. Swinton. Of course, as soon as he began to kiss her thighs, the film abruptly cut away to the last few seconds of grunting and moaning, ripping the scene out, and, thus taking away from the intensity of the filmmaker's original vision. Just wanted to say that this really angered me, because we simply need to grow up regarding the issue of sexuality. Honestly, the film shouldn't have got an NC-17 in the first place, considering that this is the most sexual thing in the film, and, by any rational standard, it is completely tame. This, to me, shows the infantile, puritannical and bourgeois mind of the MPAA at work, as was discussed in earlier, interesting threads. By the way, why in hell was that first censorship thread shut down? It was rather interesting.
  8. What you speak of, Matt, is a different matter. Watching a film cannot kill a person, whereas cigarettes can. It's a completely seperate analogy.
  9. Here's my favority Vincent Gallo quote: "A vacation should be sitting in bed eating chips and dips, watching TV, and being massaged and blown by a robot - that's a vacation." This guy's F***ing nuts.
  10. I would really like to see this dialouge get going again. Of course, the MPAA is preferable to government control, so I condsider it the lesser of two evils. But I cannot get behind an organization that imposes these childish restrictions on parents who exercise their perogative by allowing their children to see a film, only to be cut short at the door. I, too, watched The Dreamers, and was suprised at what people found to be shocking. Gentlemen, are we truly that shocked at the sight of a penis? I hope not. The greatest jest at the MPAA I have ever witnessed was when Tod Solondz was denied the R-rating for Storytelling for a very intimate sex scene. Instead of bending to their will, he digitally imposed a large red square over their nasty bits. This seemed funny to most of the people in the audience, but why cut your film and make it appear as if their idea is the correct one. By putting a big damn square over it, he makes the censorship visible, and we are treated to a very good idea of just how perverse these people are. As was earlier suggested, people will just stop submitting their films to be raped and branded by the MPAA, as Gallo did for his film Brown Bunny. I will take an NR and a limited distribution over the same limited distribution and a seal of approval from Big Brother. Artists must not tolerate censorship, regardless of if it comes from the Government or the self-appointed Bourgeois.
  11. Wasn't it Harris Savides that shot Gerry? I thought this film and Elephant should have gotten Cinematography Oscars. If memory serves, AC did a story on Elephant, but not on Gerry.
  12. How did this poop cost $10 million? Having seen the horrible "rough cut" at Cannes, I was suprised to see a different film emerge. Different, but not good. Cinematography was very 70. Like Cassavetes with a anxiety disorder and a concussion.
  13. I recently screened a new 35mm print of Bergman's Persona. Is anyone aware if it originated on 16, or was always a 35mm project?
  14. Is anyone informed as to whether or not Kubrick's 2001 has been screened in the IMAX format as of yet.
