  1. Thanks for the help! We don't need anything complicated, just a control desk for basic dimming functionality of lights on the grid, no programming or anything. Most of the lights will be "dumb" basic Par64s, some cycs, 650/1k fresnels, maybe a few kinoflos but nothing that would require pan/tilt/etc. While much of what you said I did already know, my biggest issue right is 1) finding a desk that is super super simple to use and 2) finding somewhat affordable dimmers. Thanks, Marque
  2. I know its been crazy for everyone lately (thank goodness) but anyone want to try and set up a meetup later this month? ~Marque

  4. Does anyone know where to find information (websites, books, etc.) on how to setup DMX systems? I've been asked to design a studio from the ground up and while I understand film lighting, dimmer boards and other theatre type systems I've never learned about. Thanks, Marque
  5. Just as a note the AICP rates are not the same as the other union rate cards. As a general suggestion I wouldn't take less than $150/12 ever, and then base it on your market and who the client is. I've worked for rates below my norm for certain jobs. Something also to look out for if a job is low balling you too much, you have to make sure the job is still worth it at all. Sometimes ultra low budget work comes with many hassles besides the low pay. ~Marque
  6. Usually, especially as the loader, they will reduce your initiation fee PLUS you can pay it over time (like 5 years or something). It can be a hard decision to make depending on where you are in your career. There are positives and negatives. Join to early and it be very hard to find work, and then your still paying dues, your P&W contribution, etc. and getting nothing in return. If you know a number of union ACs it can be good, if not it can be a waste of money for you. Also it will limit where you can work; many times productions won't pay to hire non-locals and you can't just tell them you'll work as a local if it isn't your local area. ~Marque
  7. My belt came from Lowes (AWP I think or something)...I've found there stuff holds up better than the home depot ones. My pouch is a Setwear and I've had it at least 4 years now. The only issue I've had with it is that I put scissors (pointed fiskars) into one of the pouchs so it poked a small hole in the bottom of that pouch but otherwise its been great and taken a lot of wear and tear. My bottle holder (either water or canned air) is a cinebags...its ok. And my walkie holder is also by setwear. My walkie holder is somewhat new since I tend to give mine away to the camera dept. PA so I seem to be buying a new one frequently but they've always been good. ~Marque
  8. Home Depot doesn't normally carry the PD 42....I ordered mine directly from Hilti. If you want to save money I was just tipped off to a suggestion. Another AC I know said he tried one where the AC just attached (carefully) and small round plastic tube to use a sight and said it worked great. ~Marque
  9. Anyone interested in Drinks one saturday night this month? I was thinking the saturday 13th... ~Marque
  10. So I've been trying for a bit to get my initial hours to qualify for benefits...but since the 400 hours increase I have actually had some of the people who were going to help me tell me they need to give the hours to those who are trying to bank so they don't get screwed when teh 400 hours happens (and I'm pretty sure it will happen even though I think its bad no matter what). Now normally I wouldn't care if I had medical or not, but I'm a single dad with a 6 year old... not having medical is an issue. I'm ok until november with COBRA but I'm just trying to find out if anyone else is having similar issues. Personally I think its kind of ironic about the entire situation. The union members who make the most money from work the most don't need to buy medical coverage because they'll have the hours... those that are short or really need the coverage and can't afford are those that don't have the hours so its a double hit. Either you work enough AND have enough money or don't work enough AND can't afford outside coverage. ~Marque
  11. Try Markertek...they tend to have high power 2.4ghz transmitters that are cheaper.... I had one I used for a few days, it was ok, not a canatrans but for $300 vs. $5000 it was worth it. ~Marque
  12. Just wondering if anyone has had to use these and what they thought... ~Marque

  14. Did anything even happen... nobody found a location or picked a date as far as I know..
  15. OK...so I have small rental house... and yes we have most of what your looking for including the small generators (1k & 2k honda ultra quiets). Not all of it is on our lists, but I've got coop lights, I've got large fixtures with adapter for lower wattage lamps. (and yes we also have chimera pancakes for David) Sorry if you can't get the stuff in England, but I can say that Barnstormer has it. I am sometimes surprised by what houses don't have. I've had a call for a ringlight and called every other house in metro NY and nobody had it. We've also provide special fixture for places like available light which surprised me since they have some stuff that most people don't have. The lesson is some house probably has it, you just need to find out which one. ~Marque
  16. I think the best answer is you need both the 650 and the kino. For interiors I always tend to want to have at least something like this... Arri Fresnels 150 x2 300 x2 650 x2 KinoFlos 2' 4 Bank 2' Double 2' Single x2 (great for tight spaces just the lamp and harness) 4' 4Bank 4' Double Thats just a basic for me. Many times i'll also have small HMIs, plus your grip including your flags/scrims/etc. Now there is an exception...when I'm travelling (via plane) to do sit down interviews or shoot a studio performance (music) I don't take the kinos. The arri kit will fit into two light coffins with a stands and good amount of grip (a few super clamps, a few cardellinis, etc. plus gels & chimera) and travels easier and gives me more options then if I left the fresnels and took the say a 2' 3 light interview kit from kinoflo. ~Marque
  17. I'm also all for 21st... Perhaps if everyone wants to see about making it a regular event? Every third saturday? Also if we decide on a location I'll setup and even on facebook, I have a few NY locals on there that aren't on the forum... ~Marque
  18. I'm almost never happy, but then again I'm always looking to improve, and improve, and yeah improve. I wouldn't say I find common imperfections because I do improve. For instance I shot an industrial for this company in 2005 for the first time (I shoot it every year). Its basically sit down interviews very straightforward the client loved them. But on the last interview, which was one of the most important for the client, I tried too hard and messed with my lighting and ended up have the lights reflect in his glasses. Only when he looked at this one certain angle. Now it is an ENG style crew of two (myself and a mixer/assistant) and the gentleman seemed to be more animated with where he was looking than most when answering the questions, but it still bothers me. It wasn't a case where I didn't have the tools I needed (well I could have used another trained hand to adjust the lighting)...but its usually things like that. I'm made big mistakes too...but the big mistakes I tend to find, while my fault, are usually things that I screwed up because I didn't take the time I needed or I didn't have the time I needed or I was just completely off my game. You can't fix a bad day or even really learn much from it since the big stuff I already knew not to do. Its the things that are little that I use to improve and build my skills with. I'm also mostly an AC/Loader so practice isn't too frequent. So doc can I get off the couch and will you take a check? ~Marque
  19. A little back story...so I was watching top chef with my gf and they're doing a thing with eggs. Now to perfectly cook an is consider to be one the most difficult things to do. It seems simple but reaching perfection is nearly impossible. If I remember correctly the same thing is similar to story about a guy who for the one of the chinese emperors drew a perfect circle freehand (also nearly impossible). So, here is my question. Does such a shot exist? Is there some simple shot that is nearly impossible to get perfectly?
  20. No it won't work with the Angenieux because the front diameter is too large for the MB-16 you need an MB-14 (6x6) the front diameter on the zoom is 162mm aka 6" (crazy the stuff stuck in my brain). ~Marque DeWinter
  21. On the Top Aux is the port and if I remember pin 1 is top and pin 3 is start, but don't hold me too that..my memory on it isn't that great either. Search on reduser. ~Marque
  22. Another 4x4 or 2x4 plus is the versitility. You have take the fixture apart and set it up with a single lamp, no doors and mount it under a counter, or all sorts of other setups... Most video guys tend go with Divas but the films guys go with 4's so in some ways it depends on where most of your work may be as well. Personally I've seen other brands that are really great but producers and those you work with expect KinoFlos.
  23. Nice reel. I agree that its a bit long. I also know some companies may have issues that you have visual effects heavy shots in there rather than just normal post polishing. ~Marque
