  3. Yeah the Schneider ND's are the best especially the new Platinum series which are hard to get your hands on. We have been doing several things , the first is after throwing the ND in white balancing to an 18% grey, this often times gets rid of the majority of the problem, from there our DIT talks the camera assistants in by tweaking kelvin, green and magenta to match both cameras. It's not an exact science but it's working for us.
  4. Gabriel Beristain did a great solar eclipse in Dolores Claiborne
  5. Just jump right in and start playing with it, FCP is very intuitive. I think one of the most helpful things for me was going to Lynda.com,(a great site to learn all kinds of software) pay $25 for a month and go through their tutorials. I taught myself FCP and Color using Lynda.com, there are some free tutorials as well in each subject to get you started and see if it's something you will be interested in. I am by no means fast or efficient like my professional editor friends but I can accomplish what I need to and it's very satisfying. Good Luck! Andy
  6. Looking for a neon artist in LA that could help us with some architectural lighting we are doing. The job would involve creating custom neon to enhance an art deco-ish city block we are building for a network television show. It's quite a bit of neon we would like to do and it involves mostly lining the contours of the buildings. Because of the amount of work and because it is a studio job I'm trying to find an individual who can give us a good deal before I start looking into the shops around town that do this work. If you are interested or know someone that you would recommend please send me a message and a link of your work if you have one through here. Thanks Andy
  7. Very interested, name your price and let me know what shipping scenario would be to Los Angeles. Thanks Andy
  8. Let me see if I can figure out how to post...they are in a .vwx format which means you need vectorworks to open them but I'm sure I can convert them. Using it on a half hour comedy series for ABC, 3 stages at Culver Studios.
  9. My vote is for Vectorworks, my gaffer and I both learned it this year as we put in a show on several stages. Little bit of a steep learning curve but that's where Lynda.com comes in handy, the tutorials there are excellent. While VW is mostly a theatrical tool most of the major lighting companies have add-ons so you can use their instruments as well (Arri, Mole, KinoFlo etc...). We would start with the production designers blueprints and just build our lighting plots on top of those. You can also assign all your dimmer channels and gel packages as well. I've been super impressed with it. Andy
  10. I would shoot color and then pull the color in post, that way all the information is there rather than shooting in grayscale. For instance if you want to add a little bit of color back in to the flesh tones the information is there already. I would also set my monitors on set to b&w if I knew the end product definitely wanted to be b&w just to make sure the contrast was where I wanted it to be. Andy
  11. I agree with David, the "Tube of Death" is what I usually use and you can smoke up a very large area with it. One method I particularly like when using the "Tube" is mixing traditional fog and dry ice that way you get a nice layer that stays close to the ground as well as the fog which dissipates into the atmosphere. Andy
  12. Anybody got one at a good price? Thanks Andy
  13. So funny...I just ran into him last week in a restaurant in downtown LA. Chatted with him for a while and like everybody here has said what a super nice guy. Said he's getting ready to shoot a small project on the "new RED". Not sure if that meant the Scarlet or what. He was such a great guy he told me to call him if I wanted to meet for lunch and talk further which when I get some free time I will certainly do! Andy
  14. Anybody got a used set of the 35mm SLR Zeiss T1.4 primes that Letus sells as a bundled kit. 28, 35, 50 85mm email me: arawson35@earthlink.net
  15. Looking for a good deal on a Panasonic 17" HD monitor. Must be in perfect shape. Thanks Andy arawson35@earthlink.net
  16. Was it a union job? If so, get them involved...they love handling situations like this.
  17. Do not upgrade to Snow Leopard if you use your MacBook to transfer your SxS cards. Sony does not have drivers that support Snow Leopard yet and are saying it may be several months before they do....what?????? I found this out the hard way on a job yesterday, fortunately somebody else had a MacBook there who had not yet done the upgrade and we were OK. I urge all concerned to bitch to Sony in hopes that they give this problem priority. Andy
  18. I don't understand this logic at all. I've been shooting a Genesis show and we create LUT's on the fly all the time, on set. We have a beautiful 24" CRT calibrated monitor, a talented DIT and a dark environment. We're shooting Panalog so the only real reason for the LUT's is for viewing dailies. I look at it as a quick and easy rough idea to communicate our intentions to studio execs. Everybody seems to get that it's only an approximation and we will time it in post.
  19. Here was the response I got from the guys at Imperx. Imperx is not supporting MAC OS, but we have every intention of doing so in the future. Norpix software solutions is offering a support for Windows OS on MACBOOK Pro with their proprietary software. Please contact Luc at Norpix, ln@norpix.com, and he can give you details. If you are satisfied with his solution, he can sell you the card and his solution. Best Regards, Nathan Nathan Cohen Imperx, Inc.
  20. Yeah, finally got around to checking out the specs ( and the price, almost $1000) and was very disappointed. I sent an email to imperx and am waiting to hear back, really quite unbelievable that they would not support mac os. This is exactly the product I've been looking for...
  21. This is great and this looks like your solution Brad. I have a Sony EX-1 and have often wished I could use my Mac Book Pro to monitor it since I have it out there in the field with me anyway to do all the archiving from SxS cards to HD's. Instead I always end up having to rent a 17" monitor. This HD-SDI express card looks like it might be the answer.
  22. Anybody got one of these for sale at a decent price?
  23. Check this out!! http://www.iconixvideo.com/products.html Panavision is carrying these I believe. That's where I first saw one. Andy
  24. I use Frame Forge 3D whenever I am trying to figure out a difficult shot, a visual fx shot or just trying to convey my ideas to others. It is a great tool because you can dial in the exact parameters of your set, the distance from camera to subject and the exact lenses ( and I mean you can specify for example: Panavision Primo 21mm T1.9 S35 ) . There is a depth of field preview on there so you can set your shooting stop and then get an idea what will fall out of focus. It really is cool, but it is time consuming. You couldn't realistically storyboard a show from it without spending a lot of time. It has no lighting support really beyond a very basic key light/fill light ratio I believe. I have also used Google's Sketch Up a bit. It is easy and fast, you can download a free version but for doing the things we need to do you need to buy the full version which is $500 I believe. The free version which I have played with had no lighting capabilities. I have yet to find a good lighting software tool, I remember playing with Wysiwig years ago and at least at that time it was very much a theater/ rock & roll lighting software tool and not very film savvy. Like I said it's been a few years so perhaps that is no longer the case.
  25. I have an EX-1 with a Letus Elite and it works great. I've been using Nikon primes and my partner has been using Canon's and we have never had any issues (except for just forgetting to turn on the vibrating mirror :). I would be more worried about lighting night woods exteriors with a limited lighting package.
