  1. Nevermind. Figured everything out. Disregard.
  2. Editors of Cinematography.com, I've researched this topic all over, but seem to always get different results/answers. I shot 24p (SD) to miniDV on an Panasonic HVX, and I'm looking to capture and edit with FCP 5. My problem is that I'm confused as to what settings to use. I've read that I should use the "easy setup" 23.98 advanced pulldown removal, and I've also read that I should simply capture in 29.97 since that's the frame rate that the video was truly recorded at. Also, what about aspect ratio? The HVX shoots 16:9, so should I have that selected? Same with interlaced vs. progressive: is this "24p" truly progressive? I get different results when experimenting with different settings -- sometimes the quality is jagged and pixelated and sometimes it's clearer. And sometimes, well, the entire program freezes up. Help!
  3. Thanks, Scott. And thanks to everyone else for the information. Will have to work with what I've got.
  4. I see. Just wondering, is the HVX the only camera on the market that won't record HD onto tape?
  5. I did not know that HD video couldn't be recorded onto miniDV tape. What about those "HD miniDV" tapes, like these: http://www.taperesources.com/prodinfo.php3...pload=2008-2-13 What's the point of using one of those if only SD video can be recorded anyway?
  6. Really? My DP told me that it's still HD, just not at as high of a resolution as if we were using the P2. True?
  7. Ah, that is what I meant. I've never worked with HD before, and I thought that maybe I would need a special deck to capture the 24p. But you can't capture HD footage on just any miniDV deck, can you? I have an old Sony GV-D300 deck, but thought that it might capture SD miniDV footage only.
  8. Hey guys, Topic title is pretty self-explanatory... I have three HDV tapes of footage I shot in 24p on an HVX. However, I no longer have access to the HVX I was using. Wondering what my options are for playback/capturing the 24p format onto my FCP system.
  9. Thanks for the quick replies! Adrian: I've seen the diffusion in test footage before. Are there any tricks to minimizing this effect? Also, I don't understand why anyone would want to shoot looking through a viewfinder with an inverted image...how were you able to adjust to that? How were you affected by that?
  10. Hey guys, I'm about to start production on a music video next week, and I'll be shooting on an HVX with the Redrock adapter and a set of Canon prime lenses. Basically, I would like to know what advice any of you (who have used adapters) can offer me when running a setup like this. I would especially like to know what results are produced from different frame rates (24p, 60i, etc.) and any problems with functionality and practicality while using this adapter. I've also heard that you get a mirror-image flip when shooting with an adapter...that ever present any problems for you guys? Is it just as simple as reversing it in post? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.
  11. Thanks for the feedback, guys. Here's another question that's popped into my head in the past couple of days: From your experience, which prosumer HD camera on the market offers the most low light sensitivity? In other words, which camera performs the best when you're forced to work with available/practical light? Anyone run such tests/made such observations?
  12. Hey Phil, thanks for the quick and detailed response. Seems like my assumptions were right. I just overheard someone talking about HD to SD hardware the other day and it threw me off; wanted to do some research. Anyway, it just dawned on me that I should probably consider a camera with the option of manual lenses. I've had my eyes set on the XHA1 for awhile now, but I've also had my mind set on the possibility of using those fancy 35mm adapters. Guess I couldn't do that with a fixed lens, huh? So, you recommend the JVC GY-HD? I'll have to search and find out which other cameras offer this option. The work that I'm doing at the moment is mostly music video and other specialty media. Eventually looking to shooting indie features though, and I would like this camera to be a jack of all trades in that sense. Any other suggestions?
  13. Hello everyone, Glad to be a part of this website. As the title states, seeing as how the prices of many prosumer HD cameras have dropped to the $3,000 mark, I've been considering HD as the medium of choice for my newly formed production company. I'm not doing it to simply avoid being obsolete -- I just think that, in principle, HD will always offer a quality advantage over most SD cameras, especially when viewing on an HD-ready TV. So, being fairly new to the "HD game," could anyone fill me in on any of the technical must-knows of shooting HD? I mainly want to know what type of setup I'll need to give me the most options for my HD-produced content to be viewed by everyone -- SDTV users, internet streaming, etc. For instance, I don't want to be left hanging when I find that someone with an SDTV can't view my work. I've heard about down converters, but I don't hear about them being used often. In fact, I don't know much about them at all. Are they mainly used for broadcast, or for converting any HD footage for viewing on SDTVs? I should also mention that most of my content will be streamed/viewed online. Anything I should know about HD for online? To sum it all up hypothetically: Would a Canon XHA1 and FCP HD software suffice? In which cases would it not? Anything else along these lines I should know about getting prepared to shoot HD? Any help would be appreciated.
