  1. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We have it working now. For some reason, it appears that when we changed from capture and sequence presets of 23.98 to 24fps, it synced again. Unfortunately, we were changing multiple variables simultaneously, so we're not exactly sure that it was that simple. Understanding that the 24fps on the SDX900 is really 23.98, shouldn't we capture at 23.98? If not, how is FCP recording the video at 24fps, is it adding two frames for every 100? And is it stretching the audio? Again, thanks everyone.
  2. Thanks John. I made the changes, but now my video and audio are out of sync. Did I do something wrong?
  3. We just purchased final cut pro hd and I am having difficulty establishing the settings to capture correctly. We are shooting in 16:9 24p advanced on an SDX900. The settings in FCP capture are very clear for DVCPRO HD, but DVCPRO50 seems quite a bit more difficult. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. What frame size should we choose? Apple doesn't offer DVCPRO50 16:9 in the list. Should we check the anamorphic box? What about the compressor? It offers DVCPRO50 NTSC, but do we want this when our objective is to go to film? What about the fps? If we are shooting in 24p advanced and are planning to go to film, should we choose 24 or the 23.98? And there some conversion we must do once the 24p advanced is captured? Sorry for such a flurry of questions. We thought this was going to be easy. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Jay Wood
  4. Thanks Charles. I'll check out Able Cinema. And Scott, thanks as well. So, Scott, are you capturing in DVCPRO50 when you transfer via SDI? And obviously your Mac and disk set up is keeping up fine with capturing the video.
  5. Hi Charles. Thanks for the response. The reason I was considering going direct to PC rather than tape was to avoid purchasing the 930. But I agree with the comments here that, from a backup point of view alone, it doesn't make sense. And the speed issue of capture, especially using DVCPRO50, is a valid concern. Plus the 930 does give me other benefits. And this is why this forum is so good. There is a lot of wisdom out there for the asking. Thanks again.
  6. Thanks for the information. Think I'll stick with tape and transfer to FCP or Avid via firewire from the SD93.
  7. I am not sure which is the best way to go when recording in the field with a new SDX900 I just purchased. Should I record on tape, then use an SD93 (expensive!) to transfer to FCP via firewire, or should I use the SDI board to record directly on to a laptop in the field? Does using SDI convert the DVCPRO50 codec and is therefore less desirable? Will recording to a laptop give me more flexibility in monitoring with a software based vectorscope, waveform monitor, etc? Thanks for any help.
  8. Hi Tim. No, just someone in California who produces videos but not films.
  9. David, thanks for your help. You're right, I was looking for a simple answer, and I guess it's not there. Your comments were helpful, so again, thanks.
  10. I guess I should reframe this question. Will I see a big difference in quality when the video is transferred to film? Is is worth spending the extra money for the 2/3' CCD, 24p Advanced, etc? Thanks.
  11. Hi Phil. Thanks for the reply. You mentioned the HD might be better in certain kinds of scenes, but do I lose any of the superior resolution through the compression 4:1:1 (I think) compared to the 900 which is 4:2:2?
  12. I am about to begin a documentary project which I hope to release on film. Most of the original footage will be interviews. I have a choice between the Panasonic AJ-SDX900 or the Sony HDR-FX1. I plan to use a PC based NLE for editing then convert to film. From what I have read, the Panasonic seems to be a much better choice. But I received some advice recently suggesting the HD is so superior that I should choose the Sony. I know there is a BIG price difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
