  1. Are you renting the CP-16? I'm not a cinematographer, but my school does have a CP-16 and man does it give us trouble. I imagine if you are renting the camera you will have less trouble, but the CP-16 at our school breaks down constantly, something to do with the mag and the camera.
  2. Haha yeah I hear you. I'm just wondering if it is going to cost a lot more to purchase. My school will purchase the camera from Birns and Sawyer, not an online outlet, so I can not really refer to online prices for the Cannon or the DVX. Does Panasonic have anything that is like the GL2? Oh yes a mic will be a good idea to add on to that bundle. Good point. Though I am thinking perhaps we should avoid the 1k lights because these kits are going to be used mostly by freshman and Sophomores. I figure most shoots are going to go on in the dorms, their apartments, or in houses, and not really outside. If they are shooting in doors the 1k's are going to get a little difficult especially if the students are unfamiliar with power and circuit breakers. :P What do you think?
  3. At my current school we have tons of film equipment, really nice stuff, but the big problem is that we only have access to this equipment if we are currently production based class or shooting our thesis. So I am would like to build a small little film package for the students so that would allow them to do small little "over the weekend" projects. I was thinking something like a Cannon GL2 and an Arri Kit. I am trying to keep price down as much as possible because this really is for the students that just love shooting. This is not for the students who can only make a film if they have an HVX or the new RED. What do you guys think? Does the GL2 make sense or should I do the DVX? I prever the DVX, but isn't it a bit more? Does an Arri kit (2x 300, 2x 650) make sense or should I put together a Kino kit? I like the Arri kit because it comes in a nice secured case, that has lights, scrims, and stands all bundled together. Suggestion/advice?
  4. When I was shooting my very first short in film school, for the last shot we had a very elaborate lighting set up so that we could do a very long tracking shot of an actor in a living room. But because we had every light hanging from the ceiling somehow we forgot a 10 foot ladder in the background. A huge mistake, sure, but at the time over 12 crew members all missed it for some reason. It was a very shadowy set. In post we were luckily able to work it out making the whole scene even more dark, which actually worked out.
  5. I am shooting a short where a guy is dreaming of rocking out in front of a concert and then as the song ends he realizes it is just the dive bar he began in. I have a few ideas of how to make the crowd seem a lot bigger, but does anyone have any idea or thoughts of how to make the crowd seem more something like a concert?
  6. I found one using craigslist.org, but it was just because I stumbled upon it. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. I tried using LA411, but it's a little difficult because most sound stages that are on there are not that interested in students.
  7. Interesting. So it's called an RCU. OKay cool. Now will the rental houses have Preston with an FX Box? Have you had any experience with using this type of set up?
  8. Hey all, This is going to sound like a very dumb question: I am shooting a short with the SR3, and would love to go from a regular 24fps to something a lot faster to give the regular motion to slow motion in one take. As you can see I am not a cinematographer, so I am not good with the terminology. I am having trouble locating control unit for this camera in particular. Also, is the particular thing I am looking for not called a control unit? Finally, I know the motor can change on the fly, but the aperture can't so what is piece of equipment called as well?
  9. Hey all, I am producing a student short, and we are looking for a sound stage in The Valley/LA Area. Does anyone have any recommendations; ones that are willing to or like to deal with students? Thanks
