  1. I have 2 of the 1012 cameras and both have the same issue. When ever the grip is in folded position, allowing the tripod mount to be used, the camera will not power on. Only when the grip is down will it work. Is this common with this camera? What is the fix for it if anyone knows? I have a project I want to use the camera with using tripod, but I may have to skip this camera if I can't get it to function.
  2. Cinematography looks good. Can't comment on the story stuff though.
  3. I was hoping the new Planet of the Apes was shot on film, but I have also read its the Alexa 65. They are shooting it locally to me here and in the Valley. I want to see Hateful 8 on 70mm projection, but I don't believe there is one film theater left for 70mm here in Vancouver. I asked the Seattle Cinerama theater if they will be showing it. They have Star Wars booked for the time period, but they said its possible they may show Hateful 8 after Star Wars has ended. Whether they show digital or film would be in question, since the Seattle Cinerama prides itself using a 4K laser projection setup. There was talk earlier that demand for shooting on 65mm has increased of late, that Panavision was considering building new cameras to meet demand. They haven't decided on that yet. Where is the theater list I can view to see who is showing Hateful 8 in 70mm? I want to see this badly, but don't know what my closest option is.
  4. I have two of these cameras and they both seem to have the same problem. The power on the camera will not turn on unless the grip is in the down position. The issue with this is it does not allow using the camera on a tripod, but only hand held. Is this a common issue with these cameras and can it be an easy fix? Or is this actually a normal function of the camera? If so- how does using a tripod work?
  5. What would be a good lens for the Bolex if I'm wanting to convert the camera over to Ultra 16? Also I don't want to spend a huge amount of cash on the lens, as this camera won't be used a whole lot while in my possession.
  6. True Tyler, but I wonder if their computer system uprez's the video to 8K before projection? Only IMAX would know the answer to that. But yes it will still be a 4K rez looking picture. I wonder if IMAX projected movies will be mastered at 8K down the road when more of the laser projectors get installed?
  7. With dual 4K projectors, it is closer to 8K then 4. But I agree it still doesn't have the rez of IMAX film. I wonder why IMAX didn't go for 8K dual projectors, as 8K has been in the system for a few years now. That said all the IMAX theaters in BC Canada all have digital projection now, which I'm not happy about. Last film I saw on film IMAX was 2012 with Dark Knight Rises. I had no idea that would be my last time to see true IMAX. I wonder when the theaters in BC will upgrade, but probably not anytime soon, because they just converted a few years ago. I know some IMAX theaters use a rail system to slide out the digital projectors and move the film one in place. I don't know why they couldn't do that here in BC. I wonder how long it will take for IMAX to install 8K laser projectors, assuming they are even thinking of going that direction?
  8. Being I love anything shot on 65mm film, I have great interest in how Tarantino's new "Hateful Eight" film will turn out. I'll see if I can get to a theater that will project it in 70mm. I have read this film is using every 5 perf 65mm camera out there, and Panavision even rebuilt the old cameras and lenses that were used on Ultra Panavision productions. Haven't heard any news on the production since shooting. Anyone have any info or news on this? Any comments?
  9. I'm not sure how well Carrie Fisher will come across on screen. She hasn't aged well, and I heard she had trouble remembering lines. I think she may of read her lines off, but that is all rumor. I do look forward to the movie though, as I am a huge science fiction fan (love all Star Wars, Trek, BSG, etc).
  10. There is rumours that JJ might direct episode 9, which means he might go right to it once 7 is in theaters. The director for #8 is no longer confirmed to do #9. Nolan is doing what I've been promoting movie makers should do since the 90s. I admire his work very much and would make the same decisions he would in terms of shooting on 65mm film, IMAX, etc. Shooting in 65mm has complications as we all know, which is why Nolan still used 35mm for the bulk of his films. IMAX cameras are extremely noisy, which means dialog scenes must be ADR'd, which is not a fool proof method of doing sound. And I've heard 5 perf 65mm has complications too because the cameras are big, but not sure exactly what that is. I don't think JJ is up to the challenge to do more of his films with IMAX cameras. It slows things down immensely.
  11. I was impressed with the new trailer. And it looks like models are being used in these shots. But I'm still worried this movie will be all action with less slower character moments. I have heard there is only one scene that was shot in IMAX, and the rest is 35mm. I wonder if the special effect model shots will be shown in IMAX or just cinemascope?
  12. Another question- where does one get Elmo and Canon Super 8 cameras repaired in North America? My Elmo 1012 is missing the filter switch, so I have no clue what is currently set to. Also it will not power on unless the hand grip is in the down position. My Elmo 350 SL works perfectly. Same with the 1000. The Canon 1014 I'm bidding on is untested, so no idea if it even works or not.
  13. I see one of these going for low dollars right now, so I put in a bid on it. I'm used to Elmo Super 8 cameras, as I have an Elmo 350XL, 1000, and 1012S-XL. Knowing the 1014 sound model is more popular, how does this silent earlier model stack up? Does it allow use of different ASA cartridges other then 40 and 160? Or will you have to manually set the meter on this one too?
  14. Chris- What will happen when I try to use the non RX lens on my camera? Will it be a viewfinder focus problem, or will the film itself be out of focus? I don't mind manually focussing a shot, but if it will be out of focus on the film- then I'll have to resell the lens.
  15. I BIN'd this lens for use on my Bolex H16 Rex 5 camera. I have read good reviews for this lens, so it should be okay. Its meant for 2/3" tv sensors, which is the same size as 16mm standard ratio. What I'm wondering if this lens has enough coverage to cover an Ultra 16mm frame before it vignettes? I know that's pushing it, but wondering if anyone has ever used this lens?
  16. Are tv zoom C mount lenses sharp enough for 16mm? I see lots of them on Ebay, but not sure if a TV zoom will reduce resolution when using film?
  17. One other question- if the battery is located in the motor itself, I'm assuming the charger supplied here will be usable? I tried plugging the charger into the motor and the needle on the meter didn't budge one bit. Also pressing the button on the motor release didn't activate the motor either. So could the battery in this thing be dead (assuming this thing has a battery)?
  18. And while we're on the topic of what parts are needed, what would be a good zoom lens for this camera that isn't too expensive and will cover Ultra 16?
  19. Other then the lens for the camera itself, what am I missing to be able to use this camera with the motor drive it comes with? Do I really need a sync sound cable plugged in to use the motor on this thing? And where is the battery? I do know its missing the rollers for the inside of the camera to be able to use the 400 foot magazine. These rollers guide the film inside the camera when using the big magazine. What else do I need to buy so I can be off and running?
  20. Problem isn't so much the film itself (as I'm sure Kodak could do a special order of 5222 in 65mm), but the developing. Fotokem has a machine capable of doing B&W film, but they said the challenges were to great and expensive to get it operational. So where else would one get the film developed (without shipping to Europe)?
  21. Dirk, Can you comment more on the 7222 film change you mentioned? Can anyone else confirm this change?
