  4. · True all axes, 24-foot underslung tracking techno jib · Highly stable system that is easy to manage and fully encoded to support AR and VR · Track mounted for increased range and flexibility in production settings · Perfect for music, sports, television, film and commercials by facilitating the impossible shot · Saves crucial venue space; high-priced seats are not obstructed or removed Los Angeles. April 19, 2017 – Gearhouse Broadcast, in conjunction with its partners Telescopic, LLC and Big Shot Camera Cranes, will unveil SkyTechno, a dramatic evolution in camera crane technology that enables powerful camera moves previously considered impossible, at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show from April 24-27. Perfect for live events, concerts, television shows, film and commercials, stage productions, and sports, SkyTechno was developed by Gearhouse Broadcast in collaboration with working operators, motion control experts, engineers and designers with experience in image capture for its many applications. SkyTechno will be on display at the Gearhouse Broadcast booths (OE836 & OE841) in a live-footage demonstration powered and processed by Columbus, their new 4K/UHD mobile unit. SkyTechno will be supported by a custom stage supplied by Production Resource Group (PRG), who will also provide a high-resolution, automated LED video wall coupled with their innovative and newly patented GroundControlTM Follow Spot lighting technology. Girraphic lends its expertise in the realm of augmented reality, extending SkyTechno’s capabilities to include high-quality virtual assets, seen from every axis possible. John Newton, the CEO and founder of Gearhouse, along with its development partners were inspired to develop SkyTechno during the production of a major television project, when there were missed opportunities for incredible shots. Gearhouse saw the need to help advance crane/jib technology. After two years of research and development in close collaboration with Brian Williams, the renowned developer of the TechnoJib, and Brian Gaetke, a premier industry operator at Big Shot Camera Cranes, SkyTechno is now available in North America. Gearhouse has plans to build more to support global uptake of the new technology. Williams noted, “The flexibility and sheer creativity enabled by SkyTechno will make this highly desired for so many productions, especially when the community sees what shots are possible with the crane.” President of PRG Television North America, Brian Edwards, added, “We have seen firsthand the need for SkyTechno. Its powerfully designed and engineered functionality, developed by experts who have years of experience, will be an incredible alternative to many productions. PRG is looking forward to our continued collaboration with the team at Gearhouse.” With augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) production requirements growing, SkyTechno embraces the demands of 360-degree production. SkyTechno employs the very latest encoding technology ensuring that 3D graphics can be inserted into the live camera feed exactly where and when needed. SkyTechno is built upon proprietary encoding software that makes every movement and placement programmable and repeatable with incredible precision. Grant Werle, general manager of Girraphic USA, said, "Our team at Girraphic is thrilled to work with SkyTechno. From the moment we saw it, we knew what this would bring to AR/VR productions. The technology not only provides stability and programmable movements, but most notably an extensive reach from every axis. A true solution and combination necessary to ensure your show is successful." The crane telescopes up to 24 feet, performs multiple 360-degree moves at the head and fulcrum, and inclines to 45 degrees while simultaneously tracking. SkyTechno supports all industry standard TV and film cameras. Marc Genin, managing director of Gearhouse Broadcast USA, said, “SkyTechno does exponentially more than other cranes, while providing all of the standard features of a high-end rig. With its three-axes movement and balance, operators can capture every possible angle up, down, around, over and under; literally from the floor to the ceiling, and from wall to wall with impeccably smooth movement. Shots that were previously choreographed to avoid background spoilers, such as equipment in shot or other problems that needed to be cleaned up in post, can now be managed with SkyTechno as a seamless, clean, fluid experience.” Additionally, SkyTechno has the flexibility to support the needs of promoters in highly desirable venues. It’s no longer necessary for production equipment to take actual seats, which are usually the most preferred seats, out of circulation. The first rows of concerts, sporting events, and live stage shots are managed by SkyTechno without blocking rows and views. “SkyTechno offers unimpeded camera shots from every angle eliminating the need for floor-based track and equipment, that can be repeated exactly, over and over again,” added Gaetke. “Now the world of creative possibilities is truly endless and ready for the future of AR and VR.” To see SkyTechno and Columbus firsthand at NAB, visit Gearhouse Broadcast in the outdoor/mobile media area between central and south halls (Booths OE836 and OE841). The organization presents the accolade to individuals in the industry whose body of work has made significant and indelible contributions to cinema. It is the only ASC Award not given to a cinematographer, and is reserved for filmmakers who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form. The director made his directorial debut with Antwone Fisher (2002). His second feature, The Great Debaters, followed in 2007. Washington's current project is the critically acclaimed film Fences, written by August Wilson and based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which will be released on Christmas Day. In addition to producing and directing the movie, Washington reprises his original Tony Award®-winning role alongside Viola Davis. "Denzel Washington is an amazing director and actor, and a conscious force in these challenging times," notes ASC President Kees van Oostrum. "A true artist is empowered by the era they live in, and he expresses an awareness of the world around us through his work. It is that strength of character that we honor with the ASC Governors Award." Washington has starred in over 50 films and television shows, in addition to his theater roles and directing credits. He received his first Academy Award® for the historical war drama Glory (1989) and a second for the crime thriller Training Day (2001). He began his career in New York theater productions, and rose to fame when he landed the role of Dr. Phillip Chandler on the NBC long-running hit television series St. Elsewhere. Washington's other television credits include The George McKenna Story, License to Kill and Wilma. When Washington crossed over into the world of film, he garnered critical acclaim for his portrayal of real life figures. He earned his first Oscar® nomination for Cry Freedom (1987), as South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. From there, he went on to portray Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992), boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in The Hurricane (1999), football coach Herman Boone in Remember the Titans (2000), and drug kingpin Frank Lucas in American Gangster (2007). He also starred in Much Ado About Nothing, A Soldier's Story, Crimson Tide, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Inside Man. Washington was mostly recently seen in Antoine Fuqua's remake of The Magnificent Seven and before that, they teamed up for The Equalizer. The actor also appeared in 2 Guns and Unstoppable. Washington is a recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to him at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. He received a Golden Globe nomination yesterday for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for Fences. Previous recipients of the ASC Board of Governors Award include Ridley Scott, Barbra Streisand, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, Christopher Nolan, Warren Beatty, Francis Ford Coppola, Sally Field, Morgan Freeman, Ron Howard, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, among many others.

  20. LOS ANGELES (September 8, 2016) - The Technology Committee of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) is pleased to announce the publication of its "Cinema Display Evaluation Plan and Test Protocol," which defines a method for the visual evaluation of parameters that characterize next generation cinema projection and active screens. As part of the industry's move to high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut, the document represents the first step towards the goal of identifying where value is created from the filmmaker's point-of-view. It is available for download now here on the ASC Web site. The "Cinema Display Evaluation Plan and Test Protocol" explores the capabilities in projectors and displays that go beyond those commonly found in cinema today. The focus is on deeper blacks, practical primaries for wider color gamut, effective contrast ratios, and optimal peak white levels for HDR cinema. Phase one of this work focuses on understanding how different parameter values impact the perception of image quality, establishing a baseline for further testing. The "Test Protocol" is the work of the Next Generation Cinema Display (NGCD) subcommittee of the ASC Technology Committee. The ASC Technology Committee is chaired by Curtis Clark, ASC. The NGCD subcommittee is co-chaired by Michael Karagosian, Eric Rodli, and Steve Schklair. In reference to the release of the new paper, ASC President Kees van Oostrum notes, "The ASC was actively involved in the initial roll-out of digital cinema, and we are excited about how new technology can improve the movie-going experience." Clark adds, "Since its beginning, the ASC Technology Committee has supported the efforts of the industry to take the cinema experience to the next level through evaluating advancing technology and its possibilities, while preserving image quality and the creative intent of the filmmakers. Addressing advanced displays and projection is the next step toward leading the creative and technical community in promoting enhanced digital cinema presentations. We look forward to collaborating with the industry to achieve this important objective." Formed in 2002, the ASC Technology Committee examines emerging imaging technologies in an effort to understand and advise ASC membership and the motion picture industry in the convergence of new digital imaging technologies with traditional motion picture techniques. The Committee consists of several subcommittees focusing on advanced imaging, cameras, digital displays, digital intermediate, metadata, workflow, virtual production, and preservation and restoration. Among the group's list of achievements are the ASC Color Decision List (CDL), the ASC-PGA Camera Assessment Series, the ASC-PGA Image Control Assessment Series, the ASC-DCI Standard Evaluation Material (STEM), and contributions to the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) and the AMPAS/ASC Common LUT format. The ASC CDL has already won three prestigious honors: a Scientific and Technical Achievement Award from the Academy, a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award, and a Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation. 22. 29 August 2016 (Los Angeles, CA) - The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has awarded its prestigious Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to The Mill BLACKBIRD®. Created by The Mill, the BLACKBIRD® is the first fully adjustable car rig that creates photoreal CG cars. The coveted honor will be bestowed November 17th, 2016 at the 11th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. A jury of industry experts selected The Mill BLACKBIRD® during the recent presentation and judging session in Los Angeles. Developed by The Mill over a three-year period, the BLACKBIRD® was designed to address problems faced by the advertising industry when creating content for automobile commercials: car availability, model revisions, limited access to locations, and footage that can quickly become outdated. The Mill BLACKBIRD® is a car rig that can be shot at any time, in any location, without the need to rely on a physical car. The length, width, wheels, and suspension of the rig can be adjusted or swapped to mimic almost any car in development or on the market. Its electric motor can be programmed to simulate various driving experiences, and The Mill BLACKBIRD® packs a camera array and 3D laser scanner to generate a virtual model of the surrounding environment for even more realistic CG renderings. Beyond its advertising applications, the BLACKBIRD® technology enables many design and creative disciplines to test concepts long before manufacture. Al Thompson, Executive Vice President - The Mill comments: "We are thrilled to be awarded the highly sought after Creativity and Innovation honor at this year's HPA Awards; being recognized and awarded for The Mill Blackbird's pioneering technological creativity is a huge achievement for us. The Mill Blackbird® has taken about three years to concept, design and engineer and it really has been a wonderful example of what you can achieve when you get the best minds in the business together. 24. LOS ANGELES (August 15, 2016) - The 38th edition of The Reel Thing, a three-day symposium addressing audio/visual restoration and archiving, will explore the constantly evolving ecosystem of film and digital restoration and preservation. This year's program will examine legacy film restorations and showcase modern technologies being used to futureproof collections and keep them viable for future display and distribution formats. The event will take place August 18-20 at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. In addition to discussions with industry leaders, premiere screenings of several restored films are scheduled, including the original, uncensored version of John Huston's BEAT THE DEVIL; Marlon Brando's single directorial project ONE-EYED JACKS; and Robert Altman's MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER. Created and co-founded by Grover Crisp, executive vice president of asset management for Sony Pictures, and Michael Friend, director of digital archives and asset management at Sony Pictures, the event supports the programs and services of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). "At The Reel Thing, our presenters continue to demonstrate the recovery of the achievements of the first century of cinema even as we assess the challenges presented by the first decades of digital moving image culture," says Friend. "Ever-more effective tools are being devised to address the mechanical and optical challenges of film restoration, and significant new technologies for the long-term preservation of digital data are rapidly evolving. At the center of this activity, technicians, archivists and the rest of the subjective human audience for cinema continue to examine, refine and redefine our understanding of the notion of preservation for both analog and digital moving image art." "It is an exciting time for the archival community as we address the changing technologies that help to preserve collections and our cultural heritage, whether it is film, audio, video or any flavor of digital you choose," notes Crisp. "Our audience is interested in the problems and potential solutions surrounding how we can cope with the issues we encounter in this still hybrid analog/digital landscape we find ourselves in." Presentations at The Reel Thing will feature expert-guided discussions on such topics as UHD/HDR, scanning, color correction, frame rate adjustment, color space and gamut. Case studies on the approach to preserving legacy films in higher quality standards and the processes applied will highlight several panels. Audio restoration will also be explored, looking at the latest technologies in sound. Speakers are expected to include: Michael Pogorzelski, Academy Film Archive; John Polito, Audio Mechanics; David Marriott, Lynette Duensing and Craig Rogers, Cinelicious; Lee Kline and Ryan Hullings, The Criterion Collection; Chris Reynolds, Deluxe Entertainment Services Group; Steve Kochak, Digital Preservation Laboratories, Inc; Wojtek Janio, Fixafilm; Andrew Oran, FotoKem; Gilles Barberis, L'Immagine Ritrovata; and Snowden Becker, UCLA, among others. (May 23, 2016) - Panavision, the entertainment industry's leading designer, manufacturer and rental provider of high-precision optics and camera systems, has announced the availability of PanaND filters. Representing the next-generation neutral density filters, they offer significant improvements in quality and consistency, so filmmakers can focus on achieving their creative goals. Full spectrum PanaND filters benefit from advancements in materials and manufacturing to deliver color neutrality very accurately. "Unlike traditional filters, PanaNDs are made with the highest quality glass and advanced coating technologies. As a result, they are truly neutral - cutting the light without altering the color temperature."
