  5. hello, i'm lighting a student short film this saturday and i have some difficulties lighting a specific set. for some reasons, the director doesn't want any practical lights inside the frame whatsoever. the action takes place at night in a kitchen where an old man is arguing with his grand-son. i need to give it a soft/clean look but still maintain it contrasty. i dont have any pictures of the kitchen except the one attached. this is two interiors shots we did in a studio setup (kitchen and toilet) and one flash back, just to give you an idea about the overall look of the movie. im not asking for a solution, but maybe directions/tips, i'm just stuck on this scene and cant seem to find a way to light it. one more thing, i want to avoid any moon light thing. hope i made myself clear, excuse my bad english :) .. the grandfather and the son will be sitting on the table in the kitchen. thank you in advance cheers

  10. hello, i was just wondering which is the best laser pointer to buy for both indoors and bright outdoors regardless the price ? i've read the PD 42 is good. are there any other suggestions?
  11. they will launch 5 to 6 fireworks all different but no chance for one to test. im shooting on the Canon 5D 400 ASA so basicly i'll be full open and just rearrange my exposure after the 1st firework. i was just wondering how would they do it on film. thanks adrian (Y)
  12. regardless the support i am shooting on, how can you know your exposure value if you are shooting a black night sky where fireworks are exploding?
  13. i wasnt questioning kris and david and have no doubt they are right. just a thwught that came to my mind that needed to be cleared :)
  14. hello, i read on cinematography- kris malkiewicz and M. david mullen, asc that when using compressed air cans it is recommended to spray from the open lens port side through the aperture rather than from inside the threading area in the aperture (preventing blowing particles into the mirror area). my question is if we sprayed through the aperture wouldn't all the particles go into the threading area where the film passes, therefore having more chances to have particles stick onto the film ? rather than blowing off particles from the threading area towards the opening of the aperture and having particles go "outside" the camera ? and since the mirror shutter is used for the viewfinder then would be less dangerous to have it "dirty" and seing that in the VF rather than not seing it and be recorded on film. ? excuse my ignorance :)
  15. hi, i heard from a friend about the afilm 4 day camera workshop in spain. (www.afilm.es) i was just wondering if anyone have gone there before and if it's worth it going or not. thanks
  16. I know this topic should be in the "lenses and accessories" section but since it's a beginners' question i thought it was better posting it here. so the question is : if i wanted some back lights to be overexposed but give a certain soft glow (when on characters) - just like when you overlay two identical frames in photoshop, one sharp and the other completely out of focus you get this sort of painting-like look. should i use white pro-mist for this effect ? any advice is appreciated :) thank you
  17. yeah i know it seems impossible with restricted budget ... i just thought maybe there are ways to trick it though ... thanks anyways :)
  18. hello everyone, i was wondering how could i do something as described later with the most basic equipments possible (= home made motion control- no use of high speeds..) shot on video (miniDV) so the scene is somehow like this : track - back while a man walks towards the camera the a car hits him from the right side of the frame. afterward everything is in slow-motion : the man bumps and head towards the car front glass and breaks it then falls on the seat. the camera follows his movements (lateral) then enters from the window to end in a close shot on the man's face. NB: the glass particles are flushed all over in the car and we see on the man's face blood appearing from scratches... so is this possible ? it is pretty much like in "revolver" but different camera movements. hope i made myself clear thanks in advance
  19. hey there's a whole topic in wikipedia which explaines quite well what you are asking for : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image) i advise you also to read the ASC manual, there's a section about aspect ratios. good luck
  20. yes there is a loss of quality in JPEG over RAW.. the thing is that i feel there's a loss in macintoshs' JPEG and windows' .. thanks anyways :D ... it's probably not the correct place for such topic
  21. i don't know if this is the proper place to post such topic, anyways help will be apreciated :) so .. we had a project which was about shooting a movie in pictures. everything was shot with a nikon D300 uncompressed format. i uploaded my photos on a macintosh and color corrected them. the thing is that when i saved them as .jpeg and opened them on a windows pc (since im editing on a window's avid version- obliged) i noticed a huge loss in their quality .. i changed the mode from RGB to CMYK : same thing . noting that both pc's monitors are calibrated . what can i do to preserve the best quality from my pictures in that case? the whole project will be exported on a DVD. thanks anyways ..
  22. hey justin since u live in belgium check the insas and iad programs too www.insas.be www.iad.be i might go there next year regards..
  23. hey, we're shooting a student short film with the canon HDV XHA1, plus we're using a redrockmicro adapter (depth if field 35mm), using 35-70mm and 24mm lenses the problem is we're not able to focus when the adapter is fixed to the camera original lens so we have to move the adapter a little forward... anyone could help resolve this problem ? ... thank you //
  24. hey kristy .. thanks for the advice .. .i'll note that .. . i'll obviously go for some camera and lighting tests im just waiting for the confirmation of the locations where we r shooting ... thanks anyways ... regards
  25. hello everyone .. i'm quite new in the field (doing my 1st year in audiovisual and cinematographic studies) and i might need some advice .. so here it is ... a class mate has a short movie project and wants me to help him lighting it .. the thing is that i need to creat a green light for "fiction" effect, and im lost between theses two : - lighting it normaly and add a green dominant in the post- color correction (they're shooting in video not cinema) .. - directly lighting the scenes with green filters what do u think ? ... ps: sorry if my english mistakes :D ..
