  1. If I remember right, fog machines heat up a glycol based thing to make the thick fog/steam. Not sure if you could rig a pan to heat fog juice or not. But you could try. Should make a nice little effect.
  2. My uncle works in law enforcement and theres the company now called simunition. They make a type of blank round that cause all the recoil and muzzle flash of a real pistol, without the whole death part. Which is great, mostly because actors are annoying to replace. I'm not sure if they open to the public but it would be worth a call to check and see if they'll help out on a movie set. Probably not, but its the closest thing to the real thing without being real.
  3. So I've been getting into special effects makeup, which then lead me to cinematography. But I enjoy makeup most of all, So I thought I'd show a few pieces of my work. These two things are some of the first things I've done and I'd like some opinions. The first is a gunshot wound modeled so finely by one of my friends. The other is a severed finger done on myself. Which doing special effects makeup one handed sucks. The gunshot wound was the first thing I'd ever done with makeup and it turned out rather well. *Just some forewarning, its a gunshot wound (entry and exit) and a severed finger, but they aren't too bad, but some squeamish people didn't like them.* I'll link the finished ones but you can look at the album for a few other pictures. Album: http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm19/alex_scroggins/ The gunshot entry wound ended up really good for a first time. The exit wound, not so much. The exit wound ended up shining when the light hit it, which ruins the effect, because I forgot to powder the matte black interior. Then when I added the blood it all just ran off the makeup and wax. Then any time a light hit the black just right it made a shining spot on it, but only when looking straight on. That was the mistake that ruined the effect. Lesson learned: Seal your effects. Entry: Exit: Straight on: Angled: My second effect was a severed finger done with some mortician's wax and some liquid latex. The latex and the wax decided not to like each other so it ended up slightly off-color. The blood was also water based and ran off the latex too easily and started beading up. Since the effect took me so long (one handed) the wax started to curl at the edges. I ended up making the parts hanging out of the finger with some tissues and stage blood, but it had a few white spots still. Lesson Learned: Get an assistant or guinea pig. Finger:
  4. I'm mostly looking for a good school and whether or not its a party school isn't a concern for me. I had heard it was a good school for any kind of photography. I've heard it has a great staff and an awesome lab facility.
  5. I was looking at different film programs and Rochester Institute of Technology caught my eye. Has anyone been there/heard about it? I mean, its a big commitment so I want to know as much about it as possible. Also, can any one recommend other good film schools?
