  1. Yes Fs7 is cheaper but Im not sure about its RAW capabilities .. pretty sure its 12 bit not 16.. and would need the extention unit I believe.. there is at least one decent PL adaptor too.. I read the C300 II has the very handy centre crop.. but only as a way of recording high speed.. ! not in sync mode !!! why Canon.. when all the competition have been implementing this function .. recently the Fs7 and Amira.. firm ware up dates.. there is just no way they are taking on board any input from actual users ..
  2. Yeah don't know if used F5 is only $5,000.. but you never know.. check the Sony forums .. they quite regularly come up these days..would seem perfect// RAW and PL.. etc
  3. A side note of possible interest.. Badlands day ext.. was mostly over exposed 2 stop s and pulled down.. to get a look.. Terry Malik was a bit worried about it at first.. but shown first rushes was ok.. initially there was also no budget for any lighting as Malik thought my old man didnt use them.. ! the film was based pretty closely on a true story of Charles Starkweather.. Personally I think its his best film.. regardless of the camera work.. the music is fantastic ..the acting.. etc.. and its just a really great film.. but definitly not really a happy set .. he wasn't the easiest of directors at that early stage anyway.. although the old man did snaffle the black Caddie after the shoot..
  4. "Since I now have an infusion of money, I'd really like to get a camera that can shoot RAW, do to the fact that a lot of the stuff I'll be shooting in green screen, and RAW handles that much better than color-sub-sampled codecs. Not that I have ever had any trouble with my GH4 in keying mind you, but I mainly settled on the GH4 and Pocket because of budget issues. " Landon.. have you thought of a second hand F5..there is a new RAW recorder now for the F5/55 the R7,so there are also going to be alot of second hand R5 RAW recorders hitting the market.. this would be a the cheapest V,s quality route I believe.. 16 bit RAW.. PL mount,/EZ..or any adaptor you want.. a camera with all the input/out puts, bells and whistles of top end unit..
  5. My old man was the first DP on Badlands.. till Malik put him in hospital with an burst duodenal ulcer :)... not a smooth shoot I heard ! that aside personally I think that was his "best" movie, and first straight out of film school is pretty amazing.. Malik also makes a small cameo appearance ..
  6. Oh yes don't get me wrong.. thats just a very small possible draw back.. Im a big fan of the CN7.. and I,d much rather have the BF adjustment than sending it in to shimmed up .. Ive never had to change the BF so far.. built in macro is also very handy.. its the lens that really saved me.. if not my back or bank balance ...
  7. Yes digibeta was the total work horse for broadcast tv before the HD... the last camera I owned for over 3 years !
  8. Maybe not in this case.. but in my limited experience of studio shoots.. the white background look that Apple made trendy, and associated with High Tech.. a few years back .. is often shot green screen.. and the "white" is put in in post.. .
  9. Sony Tape based camera,s are not made anymore .. but amazingly they are still making HDCAM tapes .. but in small amounts.. you can order it but delivery will take a bit of time.. the tsunami of 2011 destroyed alot of Sony,s tape making factories in Sendai .. and basically they saw no point to rebuild the whole plant.. HDCAM tapes were selling for hundreds of dollars after that quake.. but the F900 is no longer made.. Most of the "up market" doc,s are definitely still using shoulder mount camera,s.. you try holding a DSLR out in front of you for are than 5 mins and you,ll see why.. the s35mm servo zooms are also selling like hot cakes.. Canon CN7.and the Fujinon Cabrio range.. and the new "cheap $18,000" one they showed at NAB.. designed their zooms primarily for doc work.. they claim they can be used for cine of course.. but the focus marks are no where near as precise as dedicated cine zooms..which are alot bigger too.. Big difference is the move away from 2/3 sensors.. although news/sports/events is still 2/3 as far as I know.. doc and corp has 99% shot s35mm sensor now.. almost always with the dir or AD bring along some high end DSLR as a B camera used to be 5D/7D exclusively .. more recently the Sony A7 series too.. C300 is still probably the most used..then Sony Fs7.. F5/55.. and Amira and the odd RED.. 4K capable Hero 4 go pro is also almost always being bought along in the kit too.. you absolutely want a shoulder capable camera,or rig to make one so.. for doc work,or drama for that matter.. you need some weight for stability and smooth operation hand held ..and a (servo)zoom is pretty much vital for any actuality shooting..
  10. These rules aren't new .. they have been around for a quite few years now.. the new rules are just for freight in cargo holds..
  11. Keith your totally right sir... then basically all consumer electronic devices should be banned.. but they never will be.. but I get stopped nearly every time.. but my pro batteries are 99% safer than all these cheap Chinese ones that 300 or so other passengers are toting around with immunity .. sort of makes the IATA regs a bit stupid.. except in the case of freighting large amounts in the hold of aircraft
  12. Dont get me wrong Im for safety of course.. but I do believe there is a certain culture of fear being propagated by these various agencies mostly emanating from the US.. .. and the IATA is one of them.. and i have to fly alot with gear and its really become a pain ,all these sometimes rather stupid rules.. like my tiny bag of kimchi being confiscated as a liquid ! .. but going off on a bit of a tangent.. probably need another Gin.. morning Vicar..
  13. sure anyone can set these things on fire and make them explode in a lab or a wheel barrow.. the planes themselves have batteries.. yes 787 Dreamliner looking at you :).. but professional camera batteries are not known to do this ever really.. all these American outfits with acronyms are really just trying to scare us all to death, to justify their nefarious goals... and then the whole world has to comply to them.. its like a bad B movie from the 50,s.. Reds with lithium ! must be stopped ! enough I say !..
  14. I really think its a bit of over kill TBH.. big fires have started in cargo planes, carrying alot of lithium but not properly stored.. any professional battery iDX /PAG etc. is securely incased. 3 or 4 for personal camera use pose a minuscule risk..50 fake iPhone chargers on a flight are much more of a worry.. its the bulk freighting, from China flight I don't want to be on..
  15. Most annoying is so few people at the actual airport have a clue.. Last year I boarded a flight with no problems ,and within the legal limits for under 160WH batteries.. but was then questioned in transit ! at Dubai by a 16 year old kid who had no idea.. he then suddenly decided I was ok to board the next flight, based solely on my destination.. Copenhagen .. !!.. its a lottery every time.. and largely dependent what part of the world you are traveling from/to.. I would always have a back up plan to source locally.. some officious little Napoleon will take them at some stage..
  16. Yes for sure it depends on a person to person basis.. but there definitely was a big difference between UK and US sets.. but that was many years ago..
  17. ok sounds good sir.. good luck with the shoot..
  18. Never used the F35.. but presume ,as it was the flagship back in the day.. the VF must be pretty good.. its 2/3 inch 3CCD isnt it. .. what sort of lenses will you use.. (I would think the EYE will be perfect for he F3.. again Ive not used one.. does it have two SDI outs..)
  19. The anti fog should serve you well.. you get 2 with each unit I believe.. might be worth taking a few more if your there for a long time.. only clean them with water though, and light cloth .. Im getting to grips with the EYE.. can get the camera menu to come up but better to use all the EYE frame lines etc as they wont burn in,like the camera ones will.. Im used to having a few things in the VF.. ISO,shutter, zoom position, and how much left on the cards in the VF just for security sake.. but will learn to live without them .. actually quite nice to have a totally free frame.. I just have the 16-9 box and cross hairs.. can toggle in the WF/Hist .. but generally I never have all that stuff going as I shoot.. too distracting .. Just remember to unplug it.. no on/off switch.. but has sleep mode ..if you forget over lunch not a problem.. but over night could be..but who is leaving the battery on the camera over night anyway.. What camera are you using.. sounds exciting shoot! ..
  20. Two of them ! well thats still cheaper than one Sony OLED..! I also got the custom cable from Zacuto D tap-Lemo/BNC Rt angle BNC.. I got the LCD originally because I like the big screen, and didnt really like the Sony OLED which I had been using on a rented F5..but fogging up is a problem for me.. the anti fog was one of the main reasons to change.. but yes its great.. small and looks good (very important!).. LCD is a bit of lump on the side of the camera.. can apply a LUT for S & Q.. Anyone with a C300 or Fs7 with their very questionable VF,s.. buying this would be a total no brainer
  21. ah well.. there you have it. ! yes the guy is obviously no fool ! . I noticed that years ago.. in the UK the DP would be in total control of the lights.. choice, where, what stand .. gell scrim etc...gaffa never had a light metre, then I worked with US crews and the gaffer was calling the stop sometimes ! and doing all the pre lighting.. generally having a much more creative in put.. rather than just placing lights under instruction.. that was many years ago and maybe the UK style has changed too..
  22. Just got this for F5.. but works off any SDI /D tap set up on your camera.. very good bit of gear.. super sharp and their own patented anti fog coating replaceable diopters.. Arri rosette.. good price.. built like a tank.. they drop test it and even ran it over with a car.. ! ideal for F5/55 C300 Fs7 type camera,s.. I don't have any shares in zacuto or affiliation .. :) just thought I would pass on my findings to anyone interested ..
  23. I,d seen the Ocean films and presumed well big budget ,stars.. must have been a "name " DP and a huge lighting rig .. always thought the casino shots must have been big lighting set ups.. then I saw some making of video and couldn't see any lights ,on the wide shots anyway.. and then learnt he did all his own camera work .. although was pretty humble and admitted that sometimes his lighting wasn't that good.. a tight shot of Clooney .. cross light with hard sources .. he admitted didnt look that good and one light would have been better.. very talented film maker ..
  24. I believe he shoots himself ! .. calling himself Peter something in the credits .. using very little lighting .. Im sure I sure some making of in the casino was pretty much available lighting .. Im sure they had something for close ups though.. Ex Machina was different and there was alot of very careful lighting in built sets.. this was shot mostly F65 I read.. dont know about Oceans ..
