  1. Has anyone used one of these rigs? http://www.steadyproline.com/index.html Any feedback or info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  2. I'm looking for a way to shoot anamorphic super 8 and would appreciate any help or advice. I have been looking at some examples of Kowa 2x projector lenses being used which look good, but the issue of having to focus twice seems painful. Has anyone had any experience with this, I'd love to hear some feedback. Also if anyone knows of an adapter where you don't need to focus twice that would be great. Cheers - Jonathan.
  3. Good point Chris, Didn't think about the title being off putting. This is why its great to get other opinions! Cheers dude!
  4. Fair enough. Although "foolish" seems a little harsh! I hope that some skill in lighting, blocking and storytelling comes across in the reel too! Seems a bit short-sighted to suggest it only shows a technical proficiency with the camera, but each to their own I guess. As I said before, I have shot lots of other formats, this is just a reel of one. I'll be sure to put an overall reel up when I get back from holiday. Cheers for the opinion Chris.
  5. Thanks mate, I don't actually own a red camera, these are all jobs I happened to get during 2010 which shot on red, (wish I had 50k for a camera setup but I'm not that well off yet!) I have shot lots of other formats, I put this reel together cause I seem to be getting some work in this format and as you say, its "trendy" at the moment and for good reason! The idea was to show a degree of "expertises" with the format. Cheers for the advice tho, I'll defiantly cut a overall reel and put it up!
  6. I have put together a reel of my work on Red One and Red One MX from this year and would love some feedback or advice. I am one year out of film school so this year has been my first go at freelance work. Bellow is the link, Cheers!! http://vimeo.com/15580372
  7. I just bought a 50mm ZF lens for my canon 550D (using a nikon to EOS adapter so as to get the apature ring)and I have put a UV filter over it to protect it. However there are some strong reflections caused by it when I point it at a light source, it seems that the image might be refracting around between the front of the lens and the filter. Is this just a UV filter thing, or will I have a problem with ND's and other mattebox filters? Any help would be appreciated, cheers.
  8. You have the choice of 4K 16:9, 4K 2:1 or 4K HD. If you have the 4.5K upgrade then this is automatically 2.4:1 I believe. It really depends on your intended aspect ratio. If you are framing for 2.4:1 and cropping your 4K image to get it the either 16:9 or 2:1. As a guide, 16:9 works out to be 1.78:1 so 2:1 is a slightly wider format, but depending on your workflow more problematic. The best bet (although I have not used it mysepf) would be the 4.5K upgrade. 4KHD is designed for HD outputs and is literally 4 lots of HD (1920x1080). Your choice needs to be influenced by workflow as well. Are you going out to 16 or 35? Anamorphic print or 1.85:1 crop?
  9. Hi guys, I am about to start a shoot on 16mm. I was hoping to shoot with Kodak Vision 3 200T, but due to light restrictions we may have to switch to 500T instead. I have shot with this before and had disappointing results. Granted I have only ever got a SD telecine transfer, but the footage was incredibly grainy. This time we are getting a HD scan, and I have been told by several people that this will make the grain problem far less noticeable. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this?? We are spending quite a lot of money on this student film and I want to get it right! :)
  10. Sorry for the dumb questions, but like what? It records on MiniDV tapes. Would the HD MiniDV tapes be better? I hear they are a higher quality tape, still MiniDV though. Also when you say record the camera to something with less compression, what do you mean? are you talking about an external deck or hard drive? Wouldn't the compression be the same as it will still be HDV coming from the camera? Thanks for the help.
  11. Hello. I have been shooting some tests with a Sony Z1P and overall i am liking the results, however there is an annoying problem I have noticed. In the grey or darker areas of a shot there seems to be a weird digital blocky noise which flickers and moves distractingly. This occurs straight out of the camera when importing footage in HDV1080i50 (its native record format). It can be improved by converting the footage using another codec, but it is still there. I have tried an in-camera feature called Cinematone which adds detail in the grey areas and this seems to make the rushes better. However, if there is a codec or program or filter that can be applied in post, or even if someone can just tell me what the blocky noise is I would be very grateful. (look at the left side of the mirror, in the cabinet behind for best example)
  12. Yes, its another show reel, but i would love some feedback  http://vimeo.com/4073088
  13. Bellow is a link to my myspace, where i have an excerpt from my second year film. Would love to hear some comments! Excerpt from "My Musical Friend"
  14. Hello again! I have another question. If i have a nikon mount lens, is there any way (perhaps by way of an adapter ring) to mount it on a PL mount camera? Is there such a product as a nikon to PL converter/adapter?
  15. Hi, I have a couple of Q's regarding P+S Technik's 35digital lenses. I understand that these are the zeiss ZF series rehoused without clickstops, but i am firstly wondering if they are marked in T stops. Some sites say they are, some do not. Does anyone know? Also, has anyone any experience using them, i would be very interested to hear about it. And finally does anyone know if they cover super 35? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers- Jono.
  16. Hi People. This is probably a dumb question, but oh well. I am in Australia, so firstly all power is 240v. I am shooting a night scene at a location with 3-phase power and am wondering if there is a way to convert it to normal australian sockets so i can plug in a bunch of lights? Is there a socket converter that you can buy? I have not found one yet. Any help would be really appreciated!
  17. Thanks for the replies everyone! So Danny, are you saying that the 35mm adapters don't make any visible difference in your opinion, or that they are effective, but it is hard to tell the difference between a good lens and a cheap lens when using one? I have seen a lot of test footage with various adapter setups, and they seem to make a huge difference to me, hence me hiring one :P
  18. I have just finished a project on HD1080i50 using a sony Z1P. It looks good, but now i am wondering the best way to down convert it and whack it on a DVD. What will give me the best results in terms of res and overall quality? Also what compression format should i use, (I am working on a mac with final cut). Any advice on this would be really helpful, cheers.
  19. I am using the Mini 35 with a Sony Z1p. I am also hiring a kit of Zeiss Mk2 (T2.1) primes with PL mounts. So what do you think, i should get some good results with that set up? Also here is another question that just occurred to me, (yes i know it started out as just one question, but oh well  ) Will this setup affect my shooting aspect ratio. The Z1p has a 16:9 chip, so in HDV mode, you can only shoot in this format.
  20. Hey, just another quick question. Did you suggest the redrock because it is better or cheaper than the P+S? In fact, has anyone had dealings with the P+S, if so can you give me any feedback?

  22. Thanks Allen. I have money put aside for catering and other expenses, its just my hiring budget that is all out. I have a good deal on this equipment and don't really want to look for a different option, I really just want to know if you think i can get away without the Matte box?
  23. I am hiring a P+S 35mm lens adapter for my upcoming shoot in October. Money is tight, in fact its gone on the hiring of this thing. However they recommend a matte box and follow focus to go with it which is an extra bunch of cash i really don't have. I understand the benefits of these items, but my question is this: Do you think i can get by without, or is this pretty critical? (i don't have many focus pulls, its more just the matte box I am concerned with) Any help would be great.
  24. Hi, Im new to shooting 35mm. Im looking in Panavision's catalog and i have found Zeiss prime lens kits that are considerably cheaper to hire than everything else, just wondering how much difference there is between these and their more expensive brothers?
