  1. I have no budget, but lucky enough to get a G7, since ive been picking up more projects lately. My main challenge is in post, mostly due to not having a budget yet to upgrade.

    Would 16G be better ?

  2. Just got the Lumix G7, am testing it out, but only have an 8G Windows Premiere Pro system. I havent shot on 4K yet, but other than shooting in 4k, just wondering about editing in standard HD, or do I need 16GB (?)

    Any input is great....

  3. I looked and the left side of viewfinder, see circlular controls for B/W, CU focus check, but third circle (on top) appears to do nothing (??)

I also looked at viewfinder menu; DAR, VAR, plus ISO and Ch 1 and 2. This is all I see....this is the first time using RED ever, so very new to it...

  4. I would actually start you reel at :33 (b/w shots), then go into the warm color scenes at :16. As a Cinematographer, that strikes me first, which I know Producer will notice in the first :30-:45 seconds. This will show your different lighting techniques and variety of shots. The more variety you show, the better it'll look

  5. I just started with company, they have 1 Red One. First time I've used this in my career, as I was laid off in the recession, so it's great to finally get back to work in video. I shot some test shots the other day, have 3 older Angenieux lenses, a zoom, and two primes.

Since I just started with this company, I'm wanting to upgrade or just get new lenses, where should I look ?

Seeking a new Zoom (18-55) something like that ?

  6. Hi Joseph, in looking at your reel, what type of work are you seeking, DP/VIdeographer, Director ???

What are you showcasing, short films, stop motion, shorts ????

Normally, in my opinion (been in the biz 15 yrs), Producers/employers might only see :30-:45 seconds right off the bat, they might not stick around for the entire reel...I would only put the very best shots, highlighting lighting, lens choice to sequencing...

here's my reel, just for reference:

  7. If you are going to be a director, it's very important to understand all aspects, from lighting/cinematography to editing....

I would say, shoot as much as you can, use whatever equipment you have, and most important, tell us a story....one thing that I learned is to shoot as much as possible, and learn from your mistakes....from composition, color to sequences (wide, medium to close ups)....watch tons of movies, examine how the director & director of photography shoot their films.....

  8. John, I'm a DP/Videographer, with over 15 yrs experience....in looking at your reel, since it's your first one, IMO

    1) Are you seeking work or just getting feedback on how to be better ?

    2) Color needs work, since it's mostly muted colors and overcast, which isn't flattering, but the tree line shot is better

    3) vary the focal lengths, since it looks like it from a 50mm lens.....put more wider shots, pans, rack focus, etc, that way it's not so boring using just one focal length

    4) the sink shot needed much better framing, since the point of action is the SEE the action....my eyes were directed more towards the items on the sink

Music was very good, but here's my reel, just to show you what I've done

  9. Having been a non-Hollywood DP now for over 5 yrs, and working in commercial production for over 10.I would suggest buying any still or video camera that you can afford, then just start shooting....shoot anything, people, landscapes, action/moving shots, different lighting setups (indoors, flourescent, outdoors, etc)....study composition, lighting, depth of field, compositions, exposure....

Watch films that are well shot, from award winning DP's:

    Roger Deakins: Shawshank Redemption

    Jack Green: Unforgiven

    Dean Semler: Dances with Wolves

    Wally Pfister: Inception

    Claurio Miranda: Benjamin Button

    older school DP's:

Geoffrey Unsworth: 2001: A Space Odyssey

    Greg Toland: Citizen Kane

study how these brilliant artists photograph their films............

  10. I DP'd a weekly show in Houston several yrs back, this was before digital....to me, there is no standard lighting kit for shoots, but most DP's like to have their own kits or be supplied thru their Producers with good kits for all purposed. In Houston, I used a standard Arri kit (large kit, which included 1K Fresnel or Open face, (2) 650's and (1) 300). This kit worked really well for me, as I keyed with 1K w/softbox and used background/fill with 650's, hair light w/300. Later in my career, I used 2 Lowell kits, with Rifa's, Omni's/Totas and Pro Lights to shoot an education web-series, which included interviews....worked really well for our purposes...Lite Panels seem to be the way to go now, as I worked with Flolights recently, loved them....I would invest in several lights types, from a Lite Panel or cheaper version, depending on budget, plus a good Arri/Lowell field kit.....Kino's are good too, but I mostly used for them for lighting green/blue screens, as they were not good for portability, as lite panels are now...

  11. I've been a Superman fan since I was 5....I am really looking forwrd to seeking what Snyder/Nolan's vision will ultimately be. I am NOT expected Batman nor Superman: The Movie, but just a great movie that captures Superman for todays audience. There hasn't been a feature film about Superman origins since 1978, but there has been two origin Batman movies, Green Lantern to Marvels side.

My hope is that it's a great movie, period !!..For all us die-hards, I hope we don't over-hype this movie so much that nothing will exceed or expectations, that no matter how good it is, we won't be satisfied....Snyder is a great director, but is young, I think this will be a great film....Nolan said in an interview two weeks ago, he's blown away by what Snyder has done.....I think with Batman being so huge and not Superman this yr, this will be the entry for Justice League....
