  1. That thing already exist! Its called: Movie theater! :)
  2. do you have any cut of the movie that is presentable?! If you do: If things get rough, simply publish online, a "DIRECTOR's CUT version for FREE (it sucks) through a third party so that they can't hold you liable for a damage ( your friend puts it on torrent os somethin') so that at least you damage them in a sence of money, honour and credits as much as they damaged you! true you both are loosing in that case , but at least they didn't got what they want! :) :(
  3. Yes, you're right! Law, banking, science.... they all have internships which for the most part refers to a fresh graduate who needs a foot in a real working enviroment. After a trial period they either get hired or apply for a paid position elsewhere based on that internship experiance. But I have a feeling that only in this industry you have a situation where in any single position above the line, you can fine a person who is willing to work for free even if they have a previous experience. Therefore it is expected practice sort of speak to receive and demand a free labor (intership) from your colaborators which ultimatly brings down the value (and the price) of what people in this industry actually do... Than as a cause (or a consequence) you have a catch-22 situation where is normal to provide the "opportunity" (and publicly list it as a job) and willingly to provide the service such as 32 year old serving as an intern in the pre-production department or something.... I mean, what is so attractive about been a office clerk in a film/media company full time and not getting payed for it? :) And the same goes for camera, animation, design departments.... Are we all really such a masochists? :)
  4. Which actually makes you a real COWBOY!!! Finaly you've became a MAN! :)
  5. As me as a gun for hire = you're ruining my career! As me as a producer = I actually deeply benefit from your action! What a biz.... But I guess that's the ultimate free trade open market situation: The one is going to work for the fee that he is willing to work for and his employer is willing to pay him that! But as somebody already posted that here: Do you know of any other career and industry where one will come and say "I am willing to work for free!" :(
  6. He was probably refering to sicial-psycological aspect of 65mm production than the actual tech stuff. Bigger format=more expensive=more eyebrows raised in case of mistake=more pressure=more anxiety etc....
  7. No. I am affraid this just means that we will finaly be able to shoot movies on the simple light condition as is, regardles of daylight or nightlight conditions, without too much need for artificial ways to accomplish a natural look....
  8. Associate producers I suppose?!??! :) :( Did you asked a producer what do they usualy pay? Regardles of the amount he/she says, you have a good starting point for a negotiation!
  9. Don't you think that few live witnesses (her coworkes) are good enough of a proof that she was working there and for the amount of money that she claims she did? But than again, the court might asked her why she accepted to work off the books (cash) which I don't know if she wants to get herself involved in... The question is, did producer rejected to pay her because production run out of money or they have money but they simply don't want to pay her?! Maybe it's not worth to beat the dead horse....
  10. Did you double-checked if small claims court really demands a strong paper proofs in case like yours?!
  11. How do you see union/s to help their members in a times ahead of us, which doesn't seem so bright right now? Now it would be time when they have to prove the meaning of their existence and offer benefit to their members isn't it? I already asked this as a post in one of the other threads here but after several weeks, it didn't generated not a one single answer or opinion! Please take this as an chance to express your opinion that might influence and guide the moves and actions of unions (let the leader hears the voice of its followers), rather than malicious critique and bringing the proofs of how bad and evil union are...
  12. The last post here is from april. Almost 4 months ago... What's the weather report these days? Still slow?
  13. Here, let me try: http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/**(obscenity removed)**.asp OK, maybe my knowledge is wrong and I used wrong example to illustrate, but essentially, that doesn't change what I tried to say initially: Things that at one period or time are considered illegal, might have a great chance to be proclaimed as legal in the future (and vice versa)!!! And in that regard both this post of mine, and your previous one, could be considered a quite off topic here :)
  14. Perception of people who (nominaly and supposely) fight piracy and people who are doing it, are completely opposite! There is not a least understanding of the opposite side whatsoever. What now is considered il/legal, tommorow might be perceived as completely opposite! F ornication U nder the C onsent of the K ing In the time, not so long ago, to consumate your own marriage on your own free will was, to express myself in today's vocabulary -ILLEGAL! You had to obtain the consent of the King to do so. Now, how do you feel when I tell you that enjoying your better half, use to be illegal?! You are probably laughing right... Well, there is a great chance that in 30 years or so, people will laugh on the notion that somebody wanted to illegalize free sharing of the music, movies, pictures all of which serve first and foremost - as a joy of life! (un/holly inqisition) And why is that? Because few big wigs (managers, CEOs, senior-junior tit-and-tat) don't want to give up their (undeserved) profits, and stubornly deny the reality of life. If "Star Wars" DVD in Virgin and K-mart stores would cost 3 $, there would be no illegal 2$ copies on Canal Street, because Mafia who really runs the biz of piracy (that acctualy does cost a lot to run) would find no means and profit to produce these 2$ illegal DVDs. On-line piracy is just a side effect. Vigilantism of the people who decided to look for their own justice, because they don't belive in explanation and excuses why DVD in Virgin and K-mart has to costs 20$. When faced with choice: 20$ in the store 2$ on the street around the corner In the head of todays kid, there is only one thing in mind! Suspicion about fairness and justice. The only way to fight it is : -education of the consumers ...Something that big wigs dont' belive in! They wanna use repression and their iron fist. But, by the time they realise their mistake and declare their "Peir Victory" (because warfare for the sake of peace, is the same thing like **(obscenity removed)**ing for virginity), we will all loose our jobs, because piracy ineventably leads to drastic shrinking in production in all aspects. I am obviously totaly againts piracy of any kind! But even more, I am against the strategies and means that society today chose to fight piracy with!!!
  15. Maybe I should start a new topic but feel attracted to ask here: How do you see the union/s to help their members in a times ahead of us which doesn't seem so bright right now?
  16. It's funny in what direction this discussion progresses ,given the actual question!
  17. All movies already enlisted are great sugestions!!! But....they all belong to the filed on mainstream masterpieces that everybody tries to clone and copy these days! My suggestions are avangarde-alternatives (masterpieces never the less) that made Eastern Europeans such a good "visioners", sort of what Blues and Missisipi folk performes were to Elvis.... :) Inspiration in a sense of camera operating: Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors- Sergei Paradjanov http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058642/ (the way camera acts;no movie outplayed camera behaviour and it's poetics in this movie) The Shop on Main Street-Elmar Klos http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0460033/ (the way hand held follows the actors and frames them without compromise especially in the first half hour of the movie!!! To put most of the modern operatorars at shame :) My name is Ivan-A Tarkovsky http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056111/ (positions and angles of the camera ) Soy Cuba-Mikhail Kalatozov http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058604/ (camera movements are just insane!!!) Rebellion-Masaki Kobayashi http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061847/ The Man with a Camera-Dziga Vertov (Boris Kaufman) FIRST MASTER AND GRANDFATHER of all modern Camera work!!! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019760/ If we talk about OLD movies (up to 60s-70s)... or pretty much any chinese martial arts movie ever since they have the most elaborate camera set ups, moves and positions! Why all those bizzare movies?! First of all, because they are top notch in the field of "camera movement possibilities" without too much tech aspects, and they are old enough that it doesn't frustrates and limits your own imagination which means there is a vast field of improvement by yourself!!! (After SOY CUBA when you see where and how camera goes, you will say IT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!! well these fellows proved that it is:) Second, they are all great movies in whole!!! Third....ALL of these movies were made way before steadicam, motion tracking, complicated and expensive cranes!!! All of them were accomplished by extreme imagination, top inventive engenereeng, on a shoestring bugdet with the simpliest tools you could imagine! And also, they are all under the threat to be forgoten as a masterpieces, due the pressure and agression of mediocre majority! :) Visual storytelling inspiration?! Any Kurosava, Tarkovsky, Kobayashi, Bergman, older Fritz Lang, Hitchcock, Miklosh Jancho... These movies compared to the most of newer productions (even the ones we consider good and artistic, not like holywood lemonades) feel like Mozart-Leonard Cohen-Led Zeppelin-Beatles compared to Britney Spears... :)
  18. AMEN! Thank you!!! :) Yes, I am well aware of elusiveness of IMDB. I've mentioned it coloqialy in order to get my point and not to be too anal with examples, but than, some of the people started to splicing the hair, even though the hair and the gate are not the only problem my friend experienced. And knowing he's a smart guy, he wouldn't ditch S16 just like that... It's not just about the hair, it's not just about the gate, it's not just about AC's... it's about the whole picture for which many professionals are obviously not capable to render! huh... I am tired of all this.... Too much agresivness paired with ignorance for my taste. I just expressed my opinion with a real life example hoping to help to my fellow man who asked for advice, and got tagged as "confused" (to be gentle), my friend became a stupid looser and his crew as amateurs...even though it's quite clear that taggers didn't even tried to read my words carefully! too much...
  19. First of all, it's not my AC it's my friend's... And don't take things so litterarly. Of cource AC has to be more carefull than just when changing lenses, but in a coloquial interaction I mentioned only that action as oppose to list of all the duties of a profession. But I guess if you didn't bother to read CAREFULLY what I wrote before, what's the use of me been enthousiastic that you will now?! (I hope you're more careful when changing lenses, marking takes and pulling focus, than when reading internet posts) :) No offence, but most of the people that worked on that movie have stronger and biger professional references than yours, so to say that better crew would make a difference is lying to yourself! Maybe you don't give a damn about TC in any format, but (un)fortunatly movie biz depend on those who are do care about it enough so thay pay admission tickets. And we do talk about movie making here, not music videos, not corporate videos, not commercials! And I was addressing the issue from that point: Secret ingredient and golden porportion of alchemy called indie filmmaking! The original post was about it, and I replied to it assuming what kind of problems an indie director/producer will encounter with! Of cource, one of the problems they have to face is that many people will try to convince them, that making independant movie is the same like shooting commercils for TV except that it's longer! FIRSTTIMEFILMAKERs be aware!!! :) As far as other things that I am writing and you don't get it...well what can I say...you're right! I am wasting my time! :) I just don't know why you have to be so stuborn and fascistist in disscusion, when somebody expresses their different opinion even if it's a wrong one?! (And I am sure mine is quite right!) Enjoy the small s16mm movie with a fairly BIG STAR in it!
  20. I am afraid your professional ego and sense of justice that called you to defend the code of honor of your guild is not letting you read my words carefully! :) If I am shooting Tom Cruise with my point and shoot digital camera in the movie mode everybody will pay attention to that! If I am shooting some insignificant beggar on a street with IMAX-nobody will! In my friend's movie case, i'ts not one AC, it was a bunch of them! Cause you can't expect for one professional to work bellow the rate for 3 months, my friend had to hire many people in many departments. All of them had very decent, and few of them had even the very strong ones, IMDB references. Most of them lacked a big breakthrough though, which is exactly the reason why they accepted to do that movie hoping that this is going to hit big for them. But than the most important thing in filmmaking kicked in: Attitude! Most of them had it wrong, and you could sense that on the set just as you could see it in the footage! Unlike studio financed movies, where for the most part the only thing for success in that nitch, that is important is, to show up on time and not **(obscenity removed)** it up big time, indie is a completely playgame as I am sure you already know! To see the fruits of success in indie films you have to do an extra mile-over time-harder then ever-to the point of complete exhaustion-with the right mind set up! But that doesn't happens if your attitude is wrong! Where does the bad attitude is coming from? Among other things: s16mm Even though they all were dreaming of this movie to be their big breakthrough after which they will not have to look for a good job because the job will acctually look for them, when on set, seeing the filming format been "inferior one" they all thought that the shoot is not worth their "extra mile" and the bad attitude kicked in. As a consequence, you had a shoot where grips and PA's were dictating the shoot (not to offend any hardworking grip and production people, but on shoot, somebedy alse shoud be in charge running the show) since neither director nor producer could motivate them for extra effort, so at the end light set that can be done in 15 minuts takes up 45 minutes of working day (not because of the lack of expertise of gaffer or his crew)or an AC probably wasn't carefull as much as he was trying to convince us that he was, when changing lenses. That's one of my points: What's the cost of giving the extra motive to the crew to work harder then ever (crucial skill in the indie nitch)? Indie movie is not studio movie with the only difference that it's on a smaller scale with significantly less budget! It's completely different habitat, where even if you're not a fish you have to learn how to breathe in the water! You can't treat it as a simple math... I am surprised that so many of you that appear quite experienced in indies, don't take into account that pshycologycal factor of filming format. Just as I am surprised that nobody before me give their full opinion, before even asking the first and the simpliest question of all: What's the movie about? Unless you 're going to argue that it doesn't matter for the choice of filming format, if the movie consist mostly of daylight close-ups with drama of slow pace, or a wide shots of gun fighting grand scale actions or if 2/3 rds of the movie is suppose to happend at night in the dark streets (during the blackout:) )? :) 35mm is that extra fuel and fluid that keeps the film organism of indie movie run smoothly and in a healthy spirit! If you can't afford it, than do with Hi-Def where saving money is possible if carefull enough! David, don't worry, you can be happy and sleep calmly, since after this movie, my friend will most likely be forced to quit filmmaking!
  21. But the nice one !!! :) Ah, me romantic... :)
  22. Appendixx: Therefore, I don't know if it's possible to determine the spped of our eyes since they are in fact part of the brain (no mashine to measure that accuretly yet;if vver!!!), and work in a sort of variable frame rate mode! :) P.S. sorry for double post but the editor didn't allowed me the changes! ?
