  1. A couple weeks ago I submitted an application to join NABET I did not lie on the application, but it is common for people to stretch the truth here and there when filling out these sorts of things. I was wondering if anyone knows just how closely NABET checks the information that is submitted?
  2. I am sure you know many who do follow this rule but you cannot say that all members follow it. The promise of work in exchange for exposing any personal information online simply isn't a juicy enough bone for me to do something that most people would consider an unnecessary risk at best. The idea that it is dishonest is a little flimsy as well. There is nothing dishonest about how I represent myself here. However, even if I were to use my real name, this would in no way guarantee you that I am anything more than a complete con-artist, or for that matter anything more than a troll. As for anyone else who finds my name too great an obstacle to overcome, to offer some simple advice, it seems a pretty unfortunate introduction to this site on all sides.
  3. "Also, "Illuminate Me" you need to use you're real name on this forum." I never use my real name on the internet and insisting someone do this is unrealistic for the following reasons: 1) This increases the chance of a forum member's personal information being exposed to potential identity theft. 2) There is absolutely no way of determining whether or not the person is giving their real name anyway. For instance if my account is deleted because I chose to keep my identity private, something I highly recommend for anyone online, I may simply recreate a new account with a new and equally fictional identity. At least with the name I have chosen, you and everyone else knows that it is not my real name. So for the sake of capriciously following a rule, feel free to report me to have my account deleted. I'll simply register again with a name that is more ambiguous, but it will definitely not be my real name. You will be no further ahead in knowing my personal information. Otherwise I do appreciate all replies I have received to my queries on this forum.
  4. Tomorrow I have a screening to go to where I may run into some people from a couple of rental facilities. Hopefully I can schmooze my way through a new door that way. Thanks for the advice Jon. If you have any other ideas how to take another step forward I appreciate it.
  5. Well my one day as a grip came and went well, even though I wasn't sure what to bring with me. I worked on another production after, in another department, as a favor and now I am looking to do more work in gripping and electric. I really want to get into lighting, but I do not know much about it yet. If anyone has any advice on how I could do it, or how you would do it if you could start again, I am a really interested to know. I have a friend who is a gaffer who I want to get information from, but I also want to get jobs from him and sometimes I feel the more I ask him, the more I reveal how little I know about this. I volunteer on every shoot I can get onto but not always in the department I wish to be in. I volunteer so much, just to learn, that I do not even have a paying job, on set, or anywhere else. So I was thinking, I could kill two birds with one stone if I were to take a job at a rental facility like Whites because I would earn money and learn equipment. I would love to hear any input that more experienced grips, gaffers, or anyone else may have.
  6. Hi, everyone, first time poster. I'm going to be working as a grip for the first time in a couple days. Does anyone have any advice on what I should bring with me in respect to equipment? I have not received any information on the shoot itself except that it is in a city park, so what in general is it a good idea to show up with as a grip? Thanks for any advice.
