  2. I watched the film last week. I thought it was average when it comes to old school spy movies. The muted set design and wardrobe fit the reptilian characters in the story. The cinematography was very bland for the first 30 minutes of the film. THEN .. things got interesting. The first 30 minutes was shot standard FUJI ETERNA 35mm. When they switched to 8547 500T, I could clearly see the difference. The 8547 really blended well with that edgier section of the film, as the plot began to thicken. There are 2 scenes in the film that really got my attention. First, when Smiley began to re-tell the story about the Russian spy that he gave a pack of cigarettes and his lighter. He is lit by a rim light and a kicker from the side and rest of his face is completely covered by shadow. Second, is the scene on the airplane runway as Smiley pressures a member of the Circus for information. It's a late-afternoon/magic hour scene and an airplane lands in the background. The scene is shot with a long lens and the airplane is barely audible in the background. I thought 'either that is some good ADR work or that is one quiet airplane!' The airplane approaches the two characters and the shot began to look like it was either a bluescreen shot or rear projection. The trick really did not reveal itself until the airplane was very close, at that point the editor cut to a close up. Perhaps it was done in camera, but it did appear to be rear projection for a moment.
  3. I know of a production company that shoots training operations with special forces on 35mm VISTAVISION. Send me a PM.
  4. 1 cartridge/roll of FUJI R25 film is included with the camera. It is actually a RELOADABLE cartridge.
  5. Jon, YOU'RE RIGHT. I always push for film. Always. I added that because somebody will always say "film doesn't fit every project'.
  6. Keep shooting film. Don't worry about anything. Shoot film, support your local film lab. Push for your projects to be shot on film, when it suits the story. Chapter 11 is a financial strategy that allows them to figure out the next step. It is not the end. Save up some money and buy in bulk and freeze the film for a later shoot. Keep shooting film.

  9. I went to see Mission Impossible 4, yesterday. I found out that the 8 minute 'The Dark Knight Rises' intro is only showing in 15/70 'ANALOG' IMAX theaters. I was then told that dozens of digital IMAX theaters will TEMPORARILY switch batch to 15/70 to screen the new BATMAN film. I smiled a very big smile upon hearing that. They did show the latest trailer for the new film, it does look alot more interesting than the YOUTUBE behind the scenes footage and publicity photos. When I heard about the temporary changeover to 15/70, it confirmed my perception that Chris Nolan is dedicated to giving the audience a high quality and unique cinema experience. Rock On, my dude. B)

  11. Despite the fact that I've just cited half a dozen examples of lo-fi cinematography, I still feel that the look is becoming increasingly rare. Just to put it into a context, I consider a lo-fi aesthetic to contain: - Available light, practical sources, negative fill, bounce and little else. - No cranes, dolly or steadicam movement; tripod and handheld work oftentimes. . Makes me want to try it out for myself. A lo-fi film can be shot on 35mm : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1806811/ (this film was shot on KODAK 5296, 5248 - 5 year old film) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/technical - Six String Samurai - shot on short ends. Use short ends. Film that has been expired for a few years. Try the FUJI 500D - very grainy. Use reflectors and large mirrors - http://www.rosebrand.com/product1925/Glassless-Mirror-Single-Panel.aspx?cid=20&idx=3&tid=1&info=Glassless%2bMirrors It can be done. make the decision and stick to your guns.

  18. I saw this today and thought I should post it here: http://thephotoletariat.com/iphone-app-review-the-pocket-light-meter/ It's FREE, but I wouldn't use it for serious work.
  19. It looks great! Who modified your camera?

  21. Commit to that look if that is what you want. Shoot on FUJI ETERNA VIVID 8543 for outdoors. That filmstock will give you saturated colors and ink-like black. Shoot with a CHOCOLATE OR STRAW LEns filter; http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/59615-REG/Tiffen_44CH3_4_x_4_Solid.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/59705-REG/Tiffen_44ST3_4_x_4_Solid.html I can see by watching your Jagadam YOUTUBE clip, that there was an oval MASK window placed in the center of the image- everything inside that oval is desaturated. If you want toduplicated that effect of isolate any object, you can do the same with Adobe After Effects or Apple Motion or Apple Color. Create a new layer over the Gold/Yellow image and draw a keyframe/rotoscope mask of the objects that you want to desaturate. That way you can shoot with the lens filter without worrying.
  22. Can that type of modification be done with a soldering gun, or this beyond the 'I got my gear from Radio Shack' skill set?
