  1. The original poster asks for help making film look digital, but then all the advice he receives is about how to make film look like video. Are those two words used interchangeably? I'm new here and new to cinematography and I'm still just learning the terms. There are lots of non-digital video systems aren't there? Like all the old ones? The Nirvana video (great band, great video!) couldn't look less digital to me. It looks very old and analog which I think was the intention fo the people who made it? To make something look digital wouldn't you shoot it so that pixels were visible, and maybe add compression artifacts?
  2. There's some sage advice on this thread. How are you feeling about things now Brian?
  3. I saw the 3D version of Toy Story a few weeks ago, and while I liked it a lot and thought the 3D worked very well, whenever there was a lot of motion it tooked a lot more fake and broke up much more than any 2D film I've ever seen. From playing computer and video games with lots of motion involved there's a definite difference between something running at 25fps and 30fps or 60 fps and higher is better. The answer for games and CGI may be to run at high frame rates, but render the same amount of blur as there would be for lower frame rates. Eg run at 48fps but have the same amount of blur as if it was shot at 24fps. It might even be possible to shoot live action that way with some future sensor technology, eg. two sets of interleaved pixels shooting alternate frames.
  4. There's an episode of rhtis on iPlayer now, but it looks like it might be the Swedish version: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mf...ontainer_Lorry/
  5. OMG some of the cut scenes in the trailer have shakey cam! In a videdo game!
  6. Were you shooting RAW on the 5D, and if so how did you convert to something visible? you can probably design a conversions curve (eg in Adobe camera RAW) that will have the 5D darks display sinilarly to the 7219, though possibly with disproprtionate grain.
  7. I mean backwards and upwards. How small does the shaodw get? Could it be someone elses shadow entirely?
  8. I've not seen this but from your descriotion maybe the light casting the shadow was moved backwards (away from the bed) as the man walked towards the bed?
  9. That sounds like a great idea! I'm a stills photographer just getting interested in moving images. I don't think I want to shoot them, but I do want to understand how they work so I can fold that back into my stills. Is there a specific film you can recommend that is good cinematographically and which it's easy to get hold of the script for?
  10. D'oh! Well at least I learned that the film Vs digital debate is just as heated for moving images as it was for stills.
  11. Thanks for the recommendation, I've ordered this from Amazon and should get it in the next few days :-)
  12. I read all the way to the end and no one mentioned Hitler. Not once.
  13. Looking at static shots from that site sometimes the difference looks huge, like these shots from Fight Club: (Might have to click this one to see it at 100%)
  14. The proper trailer is out now on http://www.avatar-movie.co.uk/ Seems to tell us a lot of the story: - Big company wants to exploit the natural resources of an alien planet but are frustrated by the inhabitants. - Man in a wheelchair has his mind transplanted into a gentecially engineered cross between a human and alien body and is sent to gather information from/infiltrate the aliens. If he does good he gets to walk again. - Man starts to sympathsie with aliens and falls in love with one of them, turning against his original employers. - ... and they all lived happily ever after (but with enough wiggle room for a sequel). ---------- I know it has to have mass appeal to make back what it cost, but why oh why does every film have to have a love story in it? And why does the design look so much like Panzer Dragoon Saga crossed with a 3rd tier late-90s PC shooter?
  15. Great film. Stupid and funny and lots of weapons that looks like they came out of an FPS. Roll on the sequel!
  16. I like the photos too. "Can any one tell me what kind of film lighting do I need to achive such effects ?" It's not just what lights you use, but what the models look like, the maekup, the stylist, choice of location and of course how you use the lights and camera!
  17. Have you shot this yet? How did you do it?
  18. Just read the 4 parts, interesting read. I think part 1 could be more clearly labelled as being part 1, cos I thought it was missing to start with.
