  1. So I am Gaffing a feature starting in a few days. The DP and Director have requested a similar blue gel to what was used in The Abyss. Anyone have any idea which blue or combination of colors this may have been? Thanks!
  2. So I worked a small indie feature last month and have not been paid by the producers. Neither has anyone else in the G&E crew. Does anyone know the proper steps I should take legally? Thanks. I am in LA By the way and did sign a deal memo. It has been about 30 days since the end of production.
  3. Check it out. Made this film in Shanghai last summer as a collaboration.
  4. I would also definitely take a look at San Francisco State's MFA program. The focus is more on film as Art than the Hollywood style. Plus they accept a pretty decent amount of international students. I didn't attend the MFA program, I was working on my BA when I attended SFSU but I met many different people that were MFA students while in school. www.cinema.sfsu.edu
  5. My Only advice would be to use two cameras. I recently shot a documentary about rock bands in Shanghai and when we shot live performances we would have one camera plugged into the mixer. This is usually near the back . This way you get clean audio. so that camera would get wide shots of the band. Then we had another camera grabbing b-roll of the band playing. Before shooting we would use a slate or clap to sync the two cameras later in post. By doing this you don't sacrifice audio quality, because most of the time, the onboard mic sucks.
  6. So I moved to LA about 8 Months ago. I have ACed a few small things but as of now I have been working at a TV Production company as a PA it is basically the only job I have found that is semi related to the industry. Now I have set my sights on landing an entry level job at a rental house. I really want to work in the camera dept. I have contacted basically every rental house through email. Have had a couple interviews at Camtec for a driver position but still nothing. Next I am going to go to the rental houses in person and hand them my resume. During my down time I have also been reading up on cameras, as well as working on small shoots on the weekends whenever possible. I understand that it takes time, persistence, networking, hard work just wanted to know if anyone else cared to share their experiences on this matter. Thanks
  7. So I have been out of film school about a year and I was pondering going to the AC Workshop in Maine if it has any spaces available. I have AC'ed a feature and a couple spec commercials on the RED and EX-1 but nothing substantial enough and I have not worked with some cameras that are in use today. (Alexa, Epic and 35mm etc.)I feel like it could be a way to gain a lot of knowledge and comfort with these cameras and the job in general in order to confidently say I know what I am doing and have worked with certain cameras. Has anybody gone? If so was it a good experience, did it help you learn equipment? Was it worth the 2000 plus dollars it will cost to fly out there and pay tuition and all that?
  8. Craigslist, Mandy.com are pretty good places to look. When I was in school I managed to get on a feature as an intern and ended up getting promoted to 2nd AC.

    7D vs. 60D

So I have been thinking about purchasing a 7D or a 60D, just trying to get out to do some more shooting while things are slow and not looking to spend all of my money. I know they both have fairly similar characteristics. If you have used both could you tell me if it is actually worth that extra 500 or so dollars to go with the 7D as opposed to the 60D? Thanks
  10. Hi I got a gig to 2nd AC a commercial shoot tomorrow. I have done films but this is my actual first time getting paid to be a 2nd AC. I assembled a small AC kit with some lens tissue/solution, slate marker, AC pouch, flashlight, sharpie, pens, color tape rolls, insert slate, bongo ties... Anything else you think I might need? Any tips? I am not sure of what I should be "expected" to bring. Thanks
  11. Hello- I am trying to get into camera assisting, I have done it a few times on features and shorts. The only thing is that I feel limited because of the equipment I know. I know the job but need more experience and of course, being new to LA, more contacts! have any of you worked in a camera rental house for experience? If so, do you need to have tons of experience in order to get a job at one? and was it worth it? Thanks
  12. Yeah what i meant was the inching wheel. It seems as the pulldown claw was not working. I totally just **(obscenity removed)**ed up like 200ft of film and wasted over 300 dollars!!! AHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the tip!
  13. I shot a 100' foot roll the other day on the NPR and when I got it back the negative was just one big blur all the way down the film. It seems to me that the claw was not hitting the sprocket holes. And the little wheel frame thing on the left didnt seem to work either. Could this camera have been missing the reg pin or what? Could be a possibility since I checked it out from san francisco state university. Either way it really **(obscenity removed)**in sucks
  14. Which book would you recommend first? Or which one do you think is better? The Camera Assistant: A Complete Professional Handbook Or The Camera Assistant's Manual
  15. It is ok, I have used the XM 2 here in the states for a short (its a PAL camera). It has a cine mode and it doesnt look that bad. Definitely better than nothing..
