  1. Agreed. You can only fully appreciate the density, contrast, saturation, etc. when viewing a film print. There are cheap 16mm projectors all over ebay. I have a Bell & Howell 2585 and, provided you get one that's in good condition, you won't be disappointed.
  2. I did something similar when I was in college about the Italian section of the Bronx, here in NYC. Nice! It gives you a quick flavor of that part of France.
  3. That's quite a person to receive a compliment from! Congrats all around, Paul!
  4. Yes - I have vintage Zeiss primes (16mm, 32mm, 50mm) and one Cooke 9mm for my Arri-S. All are in great shape for vintage lenses, but they are still much softer than the newer glass that's out there.
  5. I used the 12-120 when I was in college and it was fine to work with. Having used a number of prime lenses since then, I find the 12-120 a bit soft. But as anyone else will tell you, it's really a matter of what looks good to you.
  6. Agreed. A business degree will be far more flexible and allow you to move into many more circles than just the film world.
  7. FYI: according to his profile, David Wirt has not logged on to this site since he posted that one and only post (18 August, 2014.) So I doubt you'll receive a response from him. You might want to start a new thread.
  8. I actually purchased one of their SR-2s went it showed up on ebay.
  9. And yet, you started this thread - "16mm dying..." - nearly 8 years ago B)...
  10. Respectfully, guys, I know how to use search engines. My original point was that we shouldn't have to use Google. As I said, last week I was able to find posts from 2007 using the forum search. And yesterday the forum was down for maintenance so I suspect Tim has been working on it. Check the "Find content" sections of your profiles. Last week I had 13 pages - now I have 4. Anyone else notice the same?...
  11. I was trying to access one of my 2015 posts just now and it was nowhere to be found. A few days ago, I was able to access archived posts from 2007. Anyone know if Tim Tyler did a massive message dump?...
  12. Hi Jacqueline. I took the ASC Masterclass back 2015 and really got a lot out of it. That said, it's not really a hands-on class. Students get involved in some lighting demonstrations but my one complaint was that we didn't really get any camera-time with the Alexa (a camera I've never used.) Other than that, I loved it. As Gregg mentioned, I put up that extensive post about it. Feel free to ask any other questions.
  13. Congrats, Paul! Is the film online somewhere? I'd like to give it a look...
  14. I'd have to agree but I'll give it some time to develop. I too watched Michael Crichton's 1973 film and I thought it could have been far better. Conceptually, I'm sure the show will be going more in the direction of Blade Runner - self-awareness, existence, etc. How effective it will be is another story.
  15. 17th Street Photo doesn't ring any bells. Your Google results don't surprise me in the least. I think B&H became NYC's photographic nexus a while ago. It's worth the train-ride.
  16. I live in Queens and, nowadays, you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find any of the above. There are still a handful of photo shops on Long Island, but I haven't been to any of them in years. Manhattan is still the borough for all of these things. I'd go the very old-fashioned route of checking the phone book. Then again that may be something of a rarity, as well...
  17. Don't get me wrong, Karl - you're footage is really nice! But the higher f-stops and wide lens definitely make sense. It's all a matter of taste but when shooting in direct sunlight, I try to filter the image so that I don't go beyond f/5.6 or a f/5.6-f/8 split at most. It's also a matter of optics. I have vintage Zeiss & Cooke primes which produce softer images than modern lenses even at higher stops. I'm guessing you were using a newer lens?...
  18. I've been seeing ads (AC, 9/16) for a new Kodak motion picture lab that is supposed to open in NYC this fall. But when I go to the URL, there is nothing on the website and I can't even find anything through a Google search. Anyone know what the story is with this?...
  19. Lack of grain is part of it, but I guess I'm used to seeing a softer image even when viewing a high-end film-to-digital transfer. Could also be the deep depth-of-field. Were you using NDs?...
  20. Because these days the British are better actors?... Maybe?... Just a thought...
  21. Same here. I've been extremely happy with Fotokem's work. Nice work, Karl. But I must say, it's a bit too crisp for my tastes. I really have to look to see any grain, to the point that it looks like it could be mistaken for digital. But as long as you got what you were looking for, that's all that matters.
