  2. Saw "War Horse" today. Definitely schmaltz, but it works. The ending is visually reminiscent of the best of John Ford. Cinematography very accomplished. There is an "old school Hollywood" look to much of the film which I can appreciate although some day exteriors seemed over-lit to me
  3. Get subscriptions to American Cinematographer Magazine and the IATSE Local 600 magazine, ICG. Articles therein cover the subjects you mention in depth.
  4. "DOP" is the UK/European Union equivalent of DP. Urban legend has it that the U.S. Combat Cameramen of WWII did not like being referred to as DP's because the letters D and P were painted on the backs of refugees and survivors of the Concentration Camps returning to their home countries after the end of the war and those letters stood for Displaced Person. Even though they preferred the moniker of Cinematographer the term Director of Photography stuck with the studios as far as on screen credits but the ASC is the American Society of Cinematographers and the Guild representing camera persons in the United States and Canada is the International Cinematographers Guild.
  5. One needs to have a decent body of work and a reel to show for it before most agents will entertain signing an "up and coming" Director of Photography. I think that most agents who represent Directors of Photography will be happy to have a phone conversation with a legitimate Director of Photography who is looking for representation. I would add that agents rarely find jobs for their clients, they earn their 10% by being the negotiator.
  6. The B&W footage in the promo was shot over on a Sunday about a month ago by a promo company hired by FX so I don't know for sure if it was an optical zoom or not, however it does look like something done in post. All the color footage including the smoky night motorcycle footage at 0.55 which looks a bit B&W are clips from actual episodes of Season 3.
  7. I have been on the show all three seasons. Currently on episode 9 of 13 of season 3. Panavision Genesis x 2 - Optimo zooms x 2 (15-40mm and 27-76mm) - Panavision 25-275 zoom - Panavision Primo 100mm x 2 - Panavision 150mm. Recording 4:4:4 on HDCAM. 7 day schedule per episode.
  8. Couldn't find the topic folder labeled "Shameless Self-Promotion" so I post here. "Sons of Anarchy" Season 3 premieres September 7 on FX. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmuLQVetvyg
  9. has not set their status

  10. If you join as a Director of Photography the local will let you work below that classification as a Camera Operator without having to officially re-rate to the lower classification. This is a hold-over from the rules of the New York Local 644 before the West Coast (659) merged with New York and Chicago(666). As a Camera Operator you may work as a Director of Photography but after 30 days if you want to continue to work as a Director of Photography you will have to officially re-rate to the higher classification. By way of clarification, working as the Director of Photography AND Camera Operator on the same production is allowed but only with the permission of the local on a case by case basis.

  13. Perhaps. Safety Pass training is required for roster status. Best thing to do would be to call the local, talk to a B.A. and get the info straight from the source.
  14. If you want to do the shoot join and pay on an installment basis.
  15. Charles, the film is reviewed in today's L.A. Times Calender section, and I think, overall, a pretty good one. I am irked on your behalf, however, by the following, written by the reviewer: "Director Jeremy Alter does, however, makes vivid use of the picture's limited locations (especially downtown L.A.'s landmark Bradbury Building) and has a keen eye for lighting and composition." Credit for having a "keen eye for lighting and composition" should have fallen to you, as a collaborator, at the very least.
  16. The 400 hour qualification does not go into effect until July 31, 2011.
  17. Yes. Unfortunately they were not able to increase the bank of hours by the same percentage.
  18. Cyan 30 (greenish-blue hue fluorescent) was chosen because it complimented the Super White Flame gel we use to create an orange "sodium vapor" look at night, not to match any existing fixtures.
  19. Episodes of "Sons of Anarchy" are now available for viewing on-line at http://www.hulu.com/sons-of-anarchy. Jonathan Freeman and Ed Pei Jr. shot the "pilot", I started with the episode entitled "Seeds".
