  1. Thanks. I've been making the post argument, too, but thought I'd explore available options for a producer who is asking. Also, I'm kind of curious.
  2. Which video cameras currently available have the ability to ramp frame rate in-camera, while recording? I know the Varicam can but I'm having trouble finding any others. Ideally, I'm looking for a solid-state video camera that can ramp for 10-20k. Many thanks.
  3. I am now considering the Panasonic LX-5 as it seems to have decent manual control in video mode, but only shoots 30p... http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-LX5-Digital-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003WJR69E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292603991&sr=8-1 The Canon S95 shoots 24p but you are locked-in to whatever settings you are on when you hit record- no zoom, focus, etc, not even auto... http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-S95-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNGS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1292604014&sr=1-1 Anybody have any input?
  4. It's a good idea and I have considered that. My main concern with the HMC150 is its size. I would love something smaller. I know that when I start talking about Letus adapters and EF lenses, I am somewhat negating the size advantage of a smaller camcorder like the one I linked above, but the Letus and lenses can be stashed away and don't always have to be used- I could get plenty of footage with just the camcorder and take advantage of its small size.
  5. I am going on a hitch-hiking journey in a couple weeks and I will be documenting the adventure. I initially considered taking my Panasonic HMC150, then considered a 7D package and now I am weighing options for something smaller and easier to operate in extreme run-n-gun conditions on the road. I found this Panasonic camcorder that shoots 24p for $800... http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-HDC-TM700K-Hi-Def-Camcorder-Control/dp/B0035LD0EY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It also has some other attractive features like interval recording, 60p, assignable manual control ring, etc. I would have to carry peripheral gear such as a way to record audio (either through an adapter or double system) and a letus adapter and some EF lenses. But I could also just grab this little camera at any point and shoot on the fly. My question is...is anybody aware of other new 24p consumer camcorders for under $1k? Thanks!
  6. Hi, after gaining much experience shooting digital video, I would like to educate myself on how to shoot film. I plan to gain experience on-set and attend workshops but I would like to start with some books. Can anybody recommend a good book that covers all aspects of shooting on film (cameras, operation, film stocks, processing, etc)? Through my research on the list of books pinned in this forum and elsewhere, I have discovered two books that may provide what I am looking for... Practical Cinematography by Paul Wheeler http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Cinematography-Second-Paul-Wheeler/dp/0240519620/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288733979&sr=8-1 and Filmmaking A to Z: 35mm Filmmaking http://www.amazon.com/Filmmaking-Z-35Mm-Film-Making-1/dp/1438209630/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1288733957&sr=8-1 Any opinion on those books? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
  7. Hi all, I am DP'ing a TV show about a tattoo shop and I have employed several music video techniques and tricks to give a sense of style to some of the montage sections where we showcase the artists working on their clients. These are some of the things I have done: - Time lapse from above - Mumford step motor and time lapse - Ring light and wide lens w/ artists mugging to the camera - "Portraits" against colored solid seamless paper backgrounds - mirrors to "flash" the subjects and the lens - super slow motion - before and after video portraits I'm sorry that I can't provide reference frames: my NDA prevents me from doing so. The EPs have asked what other kinds of tricks I have up my sleeve and I said I'd get back to them: truth be told, I'm a little out of ideas as the low budget precludes me from doing other things I would like to try (for example, HDR video with a beam splitter). Does anybody have any suggestions for cool things I can try? Again, sorry this is so vague. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions or ask questions. Thank you! JS
