  1. Is anyone familiar with the TV frame lines for the Canon Scoopic 16M? Is this an adequate enough substitute to use, instead of taping guidelines for a 16:9 ratio?
  2. I actually e-mailed them earlier, but got a response that they couldn't identify the particular brand or make. However, I will send them the link - Thanks very much for that, Will.
  3. Thanks for all the advice. I'll definitely try this route.
  4. Any recommendations for camera repair shops on the west coast? I'll have a Canon Scoopic 16M that'll need the basics - cleaning, lube, etc. and markings on the ground glass for a 16:9 ratio.
  5. How effective is shooting regular 16mm film cropped to 16:9 in order to get a widescreen visual? I'm in the process of getting a camera converted to U16, but if cropping with tape (and post-production) works well, it'll save me a fortune (for a poor student).
  6. Anyone know companies that will recell batteries (Canon Scoopic 16M) for a good/cheap price? I've read that the price is from $90 to $40 for one battery...hoping that the low-end prices still exist.
  7. I'm considering purchasing either a Beaulieu or a Canon Scoopic for my first 16mm film camera. The Beaulieu R16 comes with an Angenieux zoom lens. What are other recommended lenses, preferably zoom, that would bring out the best image quality (so I can get a budget range for the lens)? I've seen some shoddy footage, but here are some exceptional ones that I'm hoping to have: http://vimeo.com/10880822
  8. Pretty much anything I can grab off ebay under $1000. I'm looking at the Beaulieu and Bolex (Rex 4 or 5). I'm shooting my first short on film, so I suppose I'll be fine with a 100 to 200ft magazine. I like that they're primarily hand-held and relatively compact. I've seen some superb footage of those, and some of very poor quality. I suppose these all depend on the lenses and stock?
  9. I've been told that some transfer houses will telecine your negatives for next to nothing if you're willing to wait for any downtime that they have to process. Since U16 requires its own processor, it doesn't seem as if the discounts would be the same. Shooting R16 in anamorphic does seem to be a solution though; I've seen R16 footage that is just as sharp and wide as S16.
  10. How much does it cost for a lower end 16mm camera, such as the Bolex, to be converted to S16? Ex: an old 50s Bolex h16 or Later model Bolex Rex 5? Can any camera be converted to S16 with the end results being the same, or will there be a difference based on the original camera (such as a more recent model) ?
  11. I'm considering purchasing a 16mm camera, and I'm at crossroads of choosing between using R16, U16, and S16. I've read that converting a R16 to Ultra16 is around $200-300. But what about film transfer/telecine for Ultra16? I'm wondering this because if some production houses give very generous student discounts to telecine 16mm/S16 film, then maybe the initial savings of U16 don't outweigh the total costs of S16 due to its ubiquity?
