I remember the cinematography being really beautiful, and the colors overpowering. However, as a film I thought it was really long-winded and for lack of a better word, dull at moments. Though that is chinese cinema, very slow paced, unlike us westerners we need it quick and frequent, even in our "artsy" movies. Hero and House of Flying Daggers are not only beautiful but much more engaging.

*I posted this in the students section but I figured it would get more attention here and maybe more answers* What's up people, I have a shoot coming up (short music video) and sort of feel underprepared. I have a Canon 60d and know how to shoot with it and all the basics and intermediate stuff, however in looking for tips and techniques on various websites including this one, digital cinematography seems to be even more technical than shooting film (I'm probably wrong but that's my impression). In having watched Cinematography Style over and over one thing that always stuck with me was Larry Bridges when he said, "I think cinematography hasn't changed but it might require a new cinematographer, one who's versed in digital technology and fearless and able to assert the view, the vision as the cinematographer has traditionally done on set," It seems to me that's very much true. I really want to know the ins and outs of shooting with my own camera and digital in general. Are there any books or websites anyone could recommend that would really help me out and go in depth when it comes to shooting digital? Thanks in advance.

Really hard to take you serious when your critique of the movie is that it is a stupid story and story cinematography...I wonder what constitutes stupid cinematography...I wish I had something clever to say but at the moment it's not even worth it.

Hey I'm an NYC based filmmaker/DP wannabe trying to start out. I need and want to shoot stuff to improve my skills as well as to develop a reel, however I can't find anything! I send tons of emails on craigslist and mandy.com but so far I haven't received a gig, and not to toot my own horn but I'm decently talented...I just want to make films and I'm not coming across any opportunities.. are there any organizations or collection of filmmakers that anyone knows of that seek crew members..? The more important question is how was it for you cinematographers who now get gigs when you first started out and what can I do to start getting gigs?

Thanks so much for replying fellas! So, when it comes to color temperature what is exactly is it measuring? Is it simply for white balance? I feel like color temperature shouldn't be so hard to learn lol. I just don't know what it corresponds to..

What sort of lighting exercises can I do in order to know how to light under every situation that could occur on set... Also in what kind of ways do cinematographers use the sun as a light source?...Thanks!

Well first off I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Elias and I'm an avid lover of film (like all of you!) and I like to pretend I'm a filmmaker in the making (hopefully one day I'll actually be one) Anyway this is my first post so I guess I want to ask a question that'll get me off on the right foot in order to become the DP I want to be. I discovered my love for cinematographer quite recently, maybe a couple months ago and because so I'm actually studying cinematography at NYU. Before I ask my question I must say.. I'm feeling quite overwhelmed by the vast amount of technical things one must know...from lighting to cameras to film stock, it's quite a lot. Searching through this forum I've come across topics where I can barely understand what is being said simply because of the language and technical references being used. So, my question is where the hell do I begin to even comprehend all the aspects of cinematography? To become as technically savvy as most you kind folks. Don't get me wrong I'm not totally in the dark, I know a decent amount but not anywhere near the perfection I want. Simple things like color temperature or (light temperature?) stump me, but it's mainly the super technical language that I want to decode and understand. I'll cut this short because I have so many questions that would make this post unreasonably lengthy. Thanks and I look forward to being a member of cinematography.com
