  1. Hi there, I'm shooing a short film and I would really like to shoot on the Arri Alexa, but I dont have the budget to rent one for 1500/day + lens prices! Does anyone know of a place where I could rent an Arri Alexa for like $1000/day max? I live around LA, so anywhere in SoCal is fine! Thanks, Austin Millinder
  2. well simple stuff, like step up/dow rings, rotating ND's (although maybe not genus) can basically be purchased anywhere in San Fran. Go on down to fishermans warf and i kid you not there are 3-4 camera stores in every 150 ft, its insane. as for more advanced stuff like 15mm rail stuff and dolly you might want to do a bit of research. None of the stores mentioned above will have any of that, so you may need to go into a neighboring city or two to find a good rental store. one such store (i actually think its IN SanFran, if not close by) is "ProCamera" http://www.procamerarental.com/ they should have what you need/something similar. i just realized how late of a response this is, but i figured id post anyways as i just typed all that out even though this is close to 2 years late, hope it helps i guess haha -Austin Millinder
  3. Hello fellow cinematographers, I need help deciding wether or not to but the ikan vl5 field monitor. It's one of the only monitors ikan has that offers dslr scaling (a must for me) but im concerned about 2 things. 1) its only 5 in, and that doesnt seem like much of an upgrade from my 60D's 3in swivel lcd. the vl7 seems nice but it doesnt have dslr scaling, so its basically the same as the vl5. is there a firmware update or some way to make the vl7 dslr friendly? 2) the resolution is 800x480. is this good? ive never heard of this resolution before and im curious to know how good it is. im looking for this monitor to let me not only frame and focus, but also have the ability to get accurate color representation. is this a good buy? are there other monitors, possibly different models/brands that would be a better fit? i dont want to spend too much on a monitor. I really appreciate the help! -Austin Millinder Cinematographer
  4. is 800x480 a good resolution? ive never heard of "800x480" before
  5. correction: the monitor has lilliput on it, i just dont know if its a good model
  6. looking at monitors

  7. Hello friends, i was looking around for a cheap, but good, monitor and came across this: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/pho/3105607514.html my question is: is this a good monitor? does anyone recognize the brand? the "keywords" include "lilliput" but i'm not sure if this is a lilliput or not. if so, is it worth getting? is it good for more than just focus (color balance, framing, etc)? Or are there other monitor options I should be looking into that wont brake the bank? i really appreciate any help. Thanks, Austin M Cinematographer
  8. Should I get the Lanparte Follow Focus with hard stops, or the TrsutMT NF4 with hard stops? I have an opportunity to get them for relatively the same price, and want to know which one is preferred. So far I'm leaning towards the lanparte but im not 100% yet thanks, Austin
  9. I'm looking into getting a cheap (under 200$ US) follow focus, preferably with hard stops. I found one, but ive heard the port for the whips and cranks isnt a standard size. has anyone used this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BYRFCY/sr=1-1/qid=1330500645/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1330500645&sr=1-1&seller= If not, is there a follow focus that you can recommend? hows the Fotga? I know it doesn't have hard stops, but the marker can rotate (right?) and it has a raised plate. thanks for the help, Austin Millinder DoP

  12. has anyone used this follow focus? I found it on Ebay and it looks like its just the RJ follow focus but a different name. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pro-Version-II-Fast-Follow-Focus-w-A-B-Hard-Stops-5D-II-7D-550D-600D-D5100-/260926111694?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc0687fce#ht_4675wt_1156 Im looking for a decently cheap (under $200) follow focus, preferably with hard stops, to go with the Opteka CSX-300 shoulder rig. has anyone used the one listed above? also, can anyone recommend one that they think is better? thanks! -Austin Millinder
  13. Im DP for a project and the Director asked me if this type of shot was possible. The scene is a photographer is stalking people from afar and taking their pictures. So my director wanted to know if its possible to get a shot of the photographers lens with the person hes stalking reflected in the lens. It's hard to explain, but if you get it and can help, please do so! Im thinking of maybe a) getting a shot of just the lens and also a shot of the photographers subject then compositing in post, or B) the same as A but with the end of the photographers lens covered with green so we can put in a shot of the end of the lens with the subject reflected. Sorry if this is confusing. Thanks, Austin Millinder Cinematographer
  14. is there any way i can put my old soligor 28mm f/2.8 on my canon 60d? ive looked for adaptors but i cant find any. help! There is a picture of the mount attached.
  15. id love an L lens, but i really dont have the money. I'm only 16 (but go to an arts highs chool for film) and i cant afford a 100$ lens. I'd absolutely love the 24-70 L though, if i had the cash. I'm going with the 50mm 1.4 for now, and maybe another zoom later.
  16. hey guys, I have a canon 60D (with kit EF-S 18-135 3.5/5.6) and i'm looking to buy a new lens(s). should i get a) tamron EF 28-75 2.8 OR B) both the canon EF 50mm 1.8 and the canon EF 85mm 1.8? are there other lenses i should look into? i want to be able to put it on a full frame if needed (so i want an EF). i'm open to suggestions! thanks, Austin Millinder Cinematographer and Photographer
  17. does anyone know if 16mm is better than 1920x1080 digital HD? what about super 16mm? does it all have to do with processing? Austin Millinder Cinematographer and photographer
  18. oh also something i forgot to mention, the rig was only used outside of the bathroom. we didnt have enough room in th bathroom so we didnt end up using it. wish i had a follow focus too. money money money haha Austin Millinder Cinematographer and photographer
  19. Martin, this wasnt the shoot i was on, it was only and off day and we decided to just make something for fun; the actual feature had lights, actual rigs, etc. we didnt use lighting because i didnt have any with me but if i did i definitely would have. what parts looked shaky to you? the part when she's putting the drugs and such away? that was a choice but the entire thing wasn't meant to be TOO shaky. was it distracting? thanks for the feedback, Austin Millinder Cinematographer and photographer
  20. So ive been wondering for awhile: what aspect ratio does film shoot on? like 8mm, super 8mm, 16, super 16, and 35 (super 35?). do they all shoot 4:3 and you make it what you want later or what? I know they shoot on film and not digital so i guess im asking: once you process your film and bring it into the editing room, what aspect ratio will all the film stocks labeled above be in?
  21. I was on a shoot in Tennessee and we had an off day so decided to shoot this because we were board. We used absolutely no lighting, except the house lights in the room(s), the Canon 60d (24-105 L f/4 w/ anti-haze UV) and a $12 DIY shoulder rig. What do you think? link to watch is: http://vimeo.com/29515642_ Thanks, Austin Millinder Cinematographer and photographer

  23. So im DPing for a small tv show, and there are a few morning scenes needed. Does anyone have suggestions on how to light this? we're shooting on 60d DSLR, have arri lights (however only 2 300's, and a 650) and also have 4 can-lights from home depot. We also have gels. The scene takes place mostly indoors, in a bedroom and kitchen and we may not be shooting actually in the morning.
