  3. Don't ever let them x-ray your film. this is very bad. I travel with film sometimes and when I get to the airport I tell the person in line and security I have film and it CANNOT be x-rayed under any condition. they are trained for this. they usually roll their eyes, take it from me and do what is called a "hand inspection" - whatever that means. Then they give it back to me on the other side of security. They are trained for these situations and should know exactly what to do. If they don't, or seem skeptical, I always say "hand inspection" and if that doesn't seem to ring a bell, I ask for someone els to help me.
  4. cross processing s8mm soon and I am wondering if i need to shoot a color chart or even a grey card? I'm shooting on 100 reversal color stock and processing with negative chemicals... my immediate intuition was that I woud not need to shoot cards but I want to double check. thanks!
  5. Have Fun!! you're shooting film! It's always a magical experience. remember your latitude is much greater into the highlights... and somewhat more forgiving into the shadows as well. Since it's your first time just have fun and get your exposure right and you don't have anything to worry about other than that.

  8. Hello, I am an independent producer and director. I've been working on a feature-length film in 16mm. We shot in Canada and San Francisco and are now here for a week of production. I am looking to develop around 6K feet of 16mm and I am having trouble sifting through the myriad of labs in LA all of whom seem legitimate but none are standing out. Does anyone know of a lab that stands out? I am looking for development of negative and a telecine. I would appreciate anyone's advice. all the best! Jackson
  9. My production company is looking to pick up a second DP to shoot some 16mm for a feature. We are asking for five days, all in Los Angeles. We can pay but it's not a great rate :( This is a great opportunity if you love shooting film. We are an anologue-centric company who's first goal is quality. We are seeking a second DP to accent and contrast what we already shot. We want a different look for a portion of the story which takes place in a different time period. experience shooting film is a must. www.lipsareforsuckers.com lipsareforsuckers @ gmail This is a professional film, serious, professional applications only, please. Email resumes/demos to apply for this position, and please include at least one sentence telling us why you want to do this type of project. thanks, Jackson Defa John Schwarz Producers Lips Are For Suckers Los Angeles, CA
  10. really depends on the size of yur lights and how wide the shots are going to be. If you are okay with a lot of the area in the frame dropping off into black then I think you can sell the 200T just fine. this is an aesthetic question so you should discuss with the director. However 200 speed film is going to be a lot cleaner in the blacks when it gets under exposed, as opposed to the 500 which is really going to reveal its grain structure against those solid blacks. however, again, if you have good color timing and a noise reduction high res telecine planned, you can get away with the 500 for sure, and maintain a decent, noise-free (for the most part) picture while with a healthy amount of grain. If it were me, I'd shoot 200. but I know more people that would choose the opposite!! good luck~ :P
  11. interesting thought. I will examine some of the footage with this in mind. I agree that it too appears to be a stock issue. I think the red emulsion layer... how does one say? ...went bad. Because the blue is so heavy at times and I know the blue layer of emulsion is the bottom layer... Anyways, very tricky situation... I have found a way to correct the effect in After Effects, however I want to learn more about what a colorist can do to correct this. Any thoughts along those lines?
  12. is there anything that can be done, a process by which to correct this?
  13. Hi, I have shot a lot of 16mm film and I got the telecine back and there is a strobe on about 2/3rds of the show. We shot everything on a CP16R. We shot five different film stocks and almost everything is 24FPS. The batteries are brand-new so I don't think it's the motor. AlphaCine in seattle is our lab. Would they have said something if this strobeing was on the neg? Also, we had a SD telecine to save cost (not at AlphaCine, mind you) and will do an offline with the SD footage with the intention of conforming back to the neg and getting a 2k to finish. Here is an example I put on youtube: Any help would be greatly appreciated. In the shot there are lights in the frame, however I warn the strobe is not a result of these lights. Is it something to do with the Telecine, or is it on the negative. If it is on the negative, is my show ruined, or can something be done?
  14. please don't bad-mouth my post. I don't appreciate that. especially when you spell things so poorly while accusing me of being unacknowledged.
  15. My apologies. I was mis-informed. Just goes to show.... :) :)
