Light Meter recommendations in 2023?
Giray Izcan replied to sines's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Spectra IV is a great lightmeter. It is one of the most reliable and accurate meters out there. I wouldn't do false color etc from the video tap as the specifications do not match the film stocks in terms of sensitivity and contrast etc. -

Aronofsky's "Pi" in 8K IMAX?
Giray Izcan replied to Gautam Valluri's topic in On Screen / Reviews & Observations
I'm sorry but I can't imagine 16mm black and white reversal stock blowing up nicely to 15p IMAX... even 35mm doesn't do the justice let alone 16mm reversal stock. -
ORWO NC500 initial thoughts
Giray Izcan replied to Tyler Purcell's topic in Film Stocks & Processing
So how come all the blockbusters are shot on digital except for a few here and there? Surely hundreds of millions of dollars for a budget, they wouldn't be shooting on an inferior format. -

Of course it is peanuts in comparison to the 00s and the 90s. Nowadays shooting on film is more of a vanity affair and prestige thing as opposed to then - everything had to be shot on film... -
Is it me or am I sort of seeing some kodak 29 Expression look there as well?

It looks good. It'd be great to see it under properly lit interior stuff.

ORWO NC500 initial thoughts

To me, the grain resembles double x stock in 16mm... I wonder how this stock would look on 35 scanned on a good scanner. I have a feeling it might have a nice/different look, but on 16, forget it. If the prices made sense, I would like to shoot it on 35 and get it scanned professionally on a good scanner. -

900 for 1000ft sounds like money well spent to me then haha -

That may be but is there really that much demand for 35 cameras where you are? You don't think those rental houses would acquire 35 cameras if the demand was there? Like Tyler says, Aaton 35 is a specialty camera that comes handy in certain situations like A-minima cameras... great little s16 camera but, no way it's the right tool to shoot narrative stuff. I would get an Arri bl 4 or 4s or a 535 camera and rent specialty cameras like an Aaton when the need rises. At least with those cameras, you won't have to worry about the run time and sound issues while shooting narrative projects.

You'll need a barney... even then, it will not be quiet enough in small and quiet rooms. Feature films probably had to go through ADR for the parts with intrusive camera noise. If you're going to be using the camera for your own projects, it is fine but don't expect much in rentals... I don't think any 35mm camera is a sound investment as an owner/operator if your goal is to rent it out and profit - including Arricams... Any proper production with budget that will be shooting on Arricams will go through a proper rental house because of the support. If a camera body fails during a production, the rental house can replace it with a working one for example. The last thing you need is to halt a production that costs thousands/millions due to a camera failure.

I suspect, with these prices, they will not sell enough or any and cease its production all together in a few months. Really a shame.. -

Unfortunately, with these high prices, Orwo will price itself out of the competition. Especially for longer form productions, it will be Kodak. Kodak has consistentcy and a track record as opposed to these grossly high priced products... shame..
