  1. I LOVE the Bolex 5120 (manufactured by Chinon in Japan), I've shot over a dozen shorts on one over the years. http://www.twitpic.com/926o9b
  2. I'll have to check out my own kits later in the week and see if any have the Matte Box Kit instructions in English. :)
  3. 'TLC' pretty much equates to spending more on new cells, handle and a full service. I'll be down nearly £300 GBP after all that but the camera only cost a little over £100 GBP. My work colleague Andy has kindly paid for it (he wanted 70fps for a project he wants me to shoot), so I get to keep it after that as part payment for my services. :)
  4. NEVER USE 1.5v AAs!!! Stick to six 1.2v rechargeable batteries. I've had over a dozen 6080s pass through my hands recently and two had to be repaired due to their owners using regular 1.5v AAs.
  5. I look at the pdf more than the English printed manual any way! :)

    NIZO 6080

Please... no, no, no, NO, NOOOOOO!!! Do NOT use six regular 1.5v AA batteries. Use five and a dummy battery or six 1.2v rechargeable batteries in a Braun Nuzo 6080. Six 1.5v batteries is just enough to blow the internal lightmeter!!!
  7. I have a 10mm F1.8 B&H Angenieux Retrofocus. :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/billy_rodgers/4476933171/in/set-72157623737417082
  8. I find it just fine to operate on a sturdy Miller tripod with a cable release but I haven't been pulling focus. Those later Beaulieus look really uncomfortable to grip and heavy to use. Though this is an observation from someone who has been shooting handheld with a Braun Nizo 6080 with the matte box attached since the early 90's. So that's somewhat hypocritical of me and I've always fancied splashing out a small fortune on a Beaulieu 9008 Pro 16:9. B)
  9. Brilliant! :) I think this project might be of interest to Jamie Noakes in Sweden, so I'll point him to this thread now too.
  10. It's sunny here shooting on location in the English countryside near Frome in Somerset today. So I've persevered a bit but still don't feel that comfortable handheld. These are just test shots on Tri-X and 100D for now whilst we are really working on a documentary using two Canon C300s. The 4008 has been stuck on a tripod twice for two wide establishing shots and I've ordered an extension handle via eBay.
  11. Hi Jörg! I live and work in London but I'm from Sussex in the UK originally and have an active interest in Clapham Woods. Just Google the place! It's claimed to be a hot-spot for paranormal, UFO and bizarre cult activity, that most people see as "myth". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapham_Wood_Mystery http://www.forteantimes.com/features/fortean_traveller/119/clapham_wood_uk.html http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/occult/black-magic-in-clapham-and-sussex.html I've been shooting Super 8, 16mm and HD shorts there since 1992. So I'd be happy to film the woods and the ancient "sacred" beech tree there as part of this film project. It's quite an eerily beautiful place. Bill
  12. Yeah, that sounds like loads of fun Rudy!!! :)
  13. My old K3 was built like a tank and was so cheap I used to take it places I'd have never used my Bolex or Uni's Arriflex or Eclair. I can't recall noticing much flicker when I often used my old one in the 1990's. The footage always looked great projected and was even pretty sharp when tele-cined to Betacam SP back then. I've been thinking of picking up a Super 16 one myself.
  14. Your Dad certainly had good taste in Super 8 cameras! Mine was quite hard-up in the 70's, so I inherited a Bell & Howell 493 Filmosound 8.
  15. Ooohhh... that was a very 'SPACE AGE' mock-up! B) I will try a grip extension and see if that helps.
  16. Wise words Will. I guess I'm going to have to use it a lot more over the summer to see if I can get used to it. I really hope I do, as in every other way this camera ticks all the boxes for what I like to have in a Super 8 camera. It's robust, jammed packed full of features and pretty easy to operate. I'll still try attaching a basic extension handle to the grip, to see if that makes it a little more comfortable to use.
  17. Just digging this out of the depths, to ask what handle??? I only ask, as I find the three finger and thumb grip really uncomfortable and need something BIGGER!
  18. So, I finally got hold of a Beaulieu 4008 ZM II for a friend's production but despite working perfectly, being pristine, with a crystal clear Schneider Kreuznach 1.8 / 6-66 zoom and even a working rechargeable battery... I DON'T LIKE USING IT! The main problem is that I adore shooting Super 8 handheld and I just don't feel comfortable holding the 4008, as I struggle to get a good grip on the tiny handle. It works like a dream and is nice to operate in many ways but I feel like I'm almost balancing the camera uncomfortably on my hands rather than actually holding it whilst shooting. I know a few fellow Film-makers who adore the 4008 but I literally can't get to grips with it! Should I possibly add a larger grip underneath? Attempt to clutch hold of the camera differently? Or simply consign it to a tripod? Or am I doing something wrong? This beautiful piece of kit doesn't feel as instinctive to use in my own (not that large) hands.
  19. I hope you get this swiftly sorted out one way or another Jayne. I've just purchased a 4008 for a friend's film project and amazingly the battery still holds a charge. I'm kind of expecting to have to buy a new battery soon though. Though I actually paid a little over £100 for the camera itself, so I really mustn't grumble at the added expense.
  20. I shot loads of promos in the 90's as a professional on Super 8 reversal stock. So why do you feel negative stock is vital for your professional work Jose?
  21. Just keep checking eBay as they pop-up from time to time! :)
