  3. I was never able to find out what model. It wasn't anywhere on the camera. I've since gotten rid of it, sorry. Do you need it to make a video assist?
  4. Thanks guys. I'll have about 100 sound blankets available for the sets. Thanks for the info about the microphones.
  5. I gotcha. Our sets will have 3 walls (2 removable) and the removable ceiling.
  6. Hi There Brian, Thank you for the input it's very helpful. So you've been able to get good quality audio in a warehouse? I'm thinking of a removable, light weight ceiling covered in sound blankets for the dialogue areas.
  7. Hi, I was wondering if anyone here has any experience shooting dialogue on a warehouse location shoot? And if so, can you point out the challenges you had and how you solved them... It isn't set in stone but the most affordable and accessible option for us right now is to rent a warehouse space and build the sets inside of it. I'm filming a 1940s film noir and building some basic interior sets. I'm assuming a warehouse will be a challenge for audio and I'm wondering if putting ceilings on the sets instead of leaving the sets with no ceilings would help. We'll also have a good supply of sound blankets.

  9. Nevermind. I had to go a different route on this and I'm set. Thanks for the replies.
  10. Hello. I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm casting for my next short film and typically cast people based mostly on their acting skills, direct-ability and a general assessment of their personality. I always have a solid idea of what I'd like the characters to look like; however those thoughts are always a bit flexible (sometimes enough to even change sexes). I'll start by saying I'm casting for a 1940s crime drama so it hasn't been easy to find talent who can manage the acting style of that time period (a strict requirement). I completely understand that and I've tried to be as helpful as possible. I know it must be very difficult for many to do. My issue is this...for the first time, I have an actress who was able to deliver the audition scene as needed, able to take direction well and has a great personality... but has a physical feature for some reason I just can't overlook. She's so thin, I can't get past it. I want to but it's so distracting, I'm finding it impossible. I was requesting 135lbs at least for female talent but that was a bit flexible as well. Her stats are listed as 5'7" and 108lbs and to be honest she looks thinner than that. I do believe she would be a great addition to the cast. I just don't feel ok with putting her in the role she auditioned for. I thought I'd get some thoughts from the community in case, I'm just in a "stuck" place and need another perspective.
  11. Here is the trailer for the crazy film. Disclaimer: Rated R. You were warned. :) It still makes me laugh at its foolishness. :)
  12. My first film (if being general) was a multi-volume documentary. It was just me shooting. The first fictional film I shot was a feature length horror film (yep, went all out right away like a fool). :) I lovingly refer to it as a "camera test". hahahahahaha I'd just slammed down $4K (never again) for the DVX100B when it was hot. I thought I could do anything and wrote this crazy script about a nut job of a woman who hosted a live internet cooking show where she would kill, cook and eat her roommates. She would keep getting new roommates by putting "room for rent" ads in the paper. So she gets two new roommates. One is a woman completely obsessed with guns. I'd gotten a good deal on some airsoft guns and which of course demanded that I use every single one of them in the film. That character walked around the whole time without about 4-5 guns on and had a full on shootout with the other new roommate in the basement (he was using an assault rifle of course). The other new roommate was a guy on probation for exposing himself in public and he ends up falling in love with the cooking show woman and agreed to kill the other roommate all in the name of love. Once he kills the other roommate, he learns it's so his "boo" could cook and eat her for the show. Oh in the meantime, the cooking show woman also killed a nosy kid and the best friend of the gun-loving roommate. And naturally there came a time when she wanted to cook and eat her new man and a fight broke out which ended in both of their deaths. ...yep. That sounded like a damn good idea at the time. It was called "Sociopathica" and even though it was nothing short of awful, I enjoy that I made it. When I need a good laugh, I watch it. :) It even had the nerve to be 2 DVDs. hahahahaha I did all the crew work myself and the most of the cast were my friends and co-workers with a few being some bored individuals who saw my ad on Craigslist. Now I have to watch it again. :) Oh I guess the first thing I really attempted to shoot was a "comedy" re-write I did of the first X-Files movie. I don't think we got one shot done but we sure did try. We started with a corn maze... in the dark... with a VHS camcorder... yep. :)
  13. This is the best footage, shot on a relatively fresh roll of Vision3 500T. Well that's it. I'm going to do more practicing. I'll use my meter all the time and work on being in focus and go from there. This project was a lot of fun. Cheers
  14. Ok here goes. Be kind. :) This one is probably the most underexposed of all the footage. I believe I was stopped down to 5.6 on the lens. This was super grainy. This was the weirdest one because it had a kind of pulsing going on with the grain where it would get light then dark then light, etc. When I post the video in a few weeks you will see what I mean. Not sure on this. Might be the old stock. Overexposed 250D but not too bad for this fantasy sequence. 250D not too bad outside on the patio and very much aware of the terrible makeup job I did. At least I don't have to take credit for those crazy look bite mark patches :D I think I was stopped down too much on this one too.
  15. I got this film back from the lab several weeks ago but we missed our deadline due to scheduling issues. They've extended the deadline until tomorrow so the movie is almost done. I will post stills when I can figure out how to make them so they don't look squished (change the aspect ratio). They look fine in photoshop but not on save/export. At any rate... this has been a great learning op. 1st. the lab called to say they were having an issue getting the backing off my old stock. Hmmm, didn't think it was that old. :) Then they said my old stock was grainy because it's expired. Hmmmm, didn't know it was expired. Hahahaha I'm kidding. I totally knew. I have a freezer full of the stuff for practicing. But in all honesty I never thought it would make the backing hard to get off. Now I know. So I shot 9 rolls of film, 500T, 250D and 200T. Some Vision, Vision2 and Vision3. The best one of course was the fresh roll of Vison3 500T. I was trying not to use my fresh stuff for this project but had to use one. I really like how those shots came out. The verdict... film is awesome. Forgiving is the best word actually. In all my suckage, the footage is still usable. I can clearly see where the problems are and how I could have avoided them. 99% of them I would have avoided by using a meter. The rest by using fresh stock. I'm strictly speaking about image quality here and not about content or shot comp. A lot of the footage is underexposed because I stopped down too much and hadn't used the meter. I also love the quality of the scan. For the first time I can look at footage I shot and not see artifacts. Also, there isn't a real need to do anything with the colors unless I want to do something unique but the coloring looks like what I would have done manually in post had I been shooting digital. In other words, I'm happy with the colors. The outdoor shots are a bit over exposed but that works perfectly since it was a fantasy/daydream scene but I really love the colors on those as well. I look forward to shooting more and correcting the mistakes I made with this one.
  16. Oooo Just Googled Orwo film stock. Very nice! Thanks Chris. :)
  17. Thanks Dom. That lens I bought was teasing me. It looked like it was going to give me a great picture, but just gave me nothing but blur. :) I decided I'm going to save up a little more and buy a good bayonet mount lens or two for the SR1. I blew a lot of my stash on good Bolex lenses not too long ago.
  18. I completely understand now. Thank you all for your input. I will set up some of my test scenes like how I want to shoot the film and do stills shots with Tri-x and various other films and see how that goes. I'd like something like the last photo for most of the film but something like the first photo for the romance scenes. I'll check out "The Artist" too.
  19. Or am I missing the point entirely and they had like a trillion watt lights going on in those days? :) This is a Tri-X Still and it's well... Dark: http://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20113/big_1533__MG_8644_1.jpg
  20. Hello, I'm working on a project for 2015 that I want to shoot on black and white 16mm film. I've watched several films online shot with Tri-X film and a few on Double X but the blacks are so dark (I know, they're supposed to be). :) These are great film stocks but for my film I kinda don't want the blacks to be so black. For example, one of my favorite films is the 1956 version of "The Bad Seed" and as you can see from the photos the black and white image is not so dark. The blacks aren't so black like they are in the modern stocks. I might not be explaining this well. You can see from the fireplace below that there is black and that the liquor is obviously a dark color but the overall scene isn't dark on the edges and has an even grey scale tone. Even the images with more dark areas aren't as black as what I've seen in modern B&W stocks. Is it possible for me to achieve this lighter toned black and white imagery with modern black and white film stocks? Or would I have to shoot on color film and do a grey scale/desaturate/black and white treatment on it in post? This discussion lost me a bit: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=50105&hl=%20black%20%20and%20%20white&page=2 I think someone in that post had a great idea of shooting with a still film camera using the film stock I'd like to use with the setup I plan to shoot and see how that looks. I'm going to try that.
  21. Ahhhh I was searching for lens focus problems in general and didn't see that. Thanks Jean. I'll search better next time.
  22. Let me start by saying I just got this Arriflex SR1 about a month ago. I'm a newb. I just got my first lens for it this week. I bought this Schneider Kreuznach Xenon 1:1,9 / 16 Arriflex lens and I can't get it to focus. The SR1 I have has a bayonet mount. The lens I bought is a standard mount. But I can see where there is a little slot in the back of the lens that the tab inside the lens mount slides into. So I got it on and just can't seem to get the thing to focus. I tried focusing from wide open to 5.6. It is better the more I stop down but still not really in focus. I move the little wings to adjust the distance and still no luck. What am I doing wrong? I have 6 bolex lenses for my bolexes and using those are a piece of cake and I've shot (and developed) 10 rolls of film with them so far. The arriflex lens doesn't seem like rocket science but maybe I'm missing something or need to send the lens back. Or maybe I'm not focusing the SR1 correctly. Should I focus the viewfinder without the lens first? Thanks.
  23. I'll look forward to seeing your film. Yes, I'll definitely do some testing. Now you have me thinking John. I bought two 30' things from this public auction that they were calling sky boxes. I can find no info on them anywhere but basically they look like giant parachutes and they feel like parachute material. They have velcro on one edge and heavy clips on the other. Anyway, they are a near white color and I bought them for the purpose of using them for diffusion. Sounds like I can use them similar to how you used the parachute for your film. There are a few scenes I want to be low contrast. Is there anywhere I can watch your film John? I love this topic. :)
  24. I'm glad someone brought this topic up. I'm doing something similar; shooting film noir style for a short I'm doing in Jan of 2015. The film is set in the year 1944 and I want to create a similar look of film noir films shot during this time when I shoot 16mm for the project. I was thinking of going with Tri-X Reversal but Guillaume has given me other options to consider. I've watched many film noir films of the era and they all have a different look some darker than others, etc. So I'll have to decide where I'd like my short to fall. I'd love to see how yours turns out Guillaume. :)
  25. Here is the SR1 blimp, with my SR1 in it. I plugged everything in and it appears to work fine. The viewfinder question was easy to solve. There is a side piece that slides right out. You push the SR1 in and then put the side piece back in. There is also another solid slide out on the other side for a video assist or if you are using the viewfinder on the opposite side. This blimp is awesome! Can't hear this camera at all when it's locked down. I do have to ask the seller a few more questions. The green button doesn't turn the camera on and off it appears to operate a red blinking light in the back that I can only assume is a sync light. The digital readout appears to list the speed you are running the camera at on the bottom but I'd like to know what the top numbers are. I'm also wondering if there is an accessory I'm supposed to buy to turn the camera on and off from one of those ports on the side of the blimp. As it stands now, I have to turn the camera on and then close the blimp.
