  1. I agree with Rob. Storaro said many times that there is only one Director on the set, so why would there be a "director" of photography? Why not a "director of sound" as well? I think the term DP ( or Director of Photography ) is much widespread, but Cinematographer is the one that really encompasses all the things that he/she as a professional artist does on a film. I don't think it has anything to do with the film itself, be it a feature, a short, a doc, or a music video. The job is the same.
  2. I recently worked on a film as B camera operator. We used 2 cameras on about 75% of the shoot. We managed to get a pretty quick pace with this method. Our approach was aiming both cameras at the same angle, or staying on the same side of the axis. A camera would do the wide shots and B camera would do the close ups. We chose this over doing cross angles, as it obviously helped wit the lighting. Also we shot entirely con location. Most of them small. When the B camera was not needed for a specific setup, I would be doing 2nd unit with it, going out to do landscapes, timelapse work, or just cutaways. We used two Sony F3's and two sets of Zeiss Compact Primes. Previously tested of course. Cheers.
  3. Doyle is one of my favorite cinematographers, and yes, because of his work with WKW. I met him at the Barcelona Asian Film Festival in 2005 where he gave a masterclass. He showed up beer in hand and talked for about 2 hours. Not a word on gear or technique. Just life experience and craft. Very interesting talk. He actually mentioned that most of the stunning visuals for which he is most noted for, he discovered by accident. Being crazy and extrovert does not take away any of his talent or genius. I love his work and I love him as a person.
  4. Lubezki's best work so far. Lights or no lights, he really did an excellent job on capturing beautiful moments of natural light that added to the narrative. Also the operating on this film is superb. He should have won the Oscar. He won the ASC award, very deserving. Lubezki is one of the top cinematographers working today.
  5. Cinematographer Style is a great film on cinematographers and their craft. It is very inspiring. I always watch it before I go out shooting something.
  6. I suggest watching Errol Morris' "Standard Operating Procedure" shot by the master Robert Richardson ASC. Amazing cinematography.
