  1. David, Loved your post. superb tips. thanks.
  2. Hi David, thanks. can we use fans to keep the fluttering and shoot it high speed like 100fps to give the look of being in underwater. What about bubbles? regards
  3. Hi there everyone,Greetings and a very happy new year. I am coming up with a feature shoot where there is a small under water 'fantasy' sequence (ok, clue is a mermaid in the sea).Logistics wise we are not ready to go and shoot either in sea or in a swimming pool. Couple of years back, I guess in 2009, there was an awesome thread on CML about shooting dry for wet. That thread is buried under 8000emails and I cant locate it. I need advice of all you experience cinematographers about how best to cheat and give it an underwater look.I will submit the following for your consideration:-a) it is a fantasy sequence. doesn't have to look like a real underwater.b) no long takes. just inserts/reactions and Medium shots of the artist underwater. What we have is - a studio space, lights, fans, grips and an awesome art director, Arri SR3. We do not wish to go the digital route in creating bubbles etc. Looking forward for your tips. regards Prashantt Rai
  4. the pictures look good. so agree with you that freezing negatives does work :-) umm lets try freezing a hard drive for couple of weeks. :-))
  5. 18 to 1? thats too much. <_<
  6. i just shot a low budget ad yesterday on S16. processed overnight. Got it scanned and graded today. edit starts Monday. Everyone at post house was saying that colours and looks come out well on film. The colourist was very excited grading a film based project.
  7. http://www.directors.uk.com Since this campaign was led by Directors UK I am sure there are many people who are interested in shooting film and that option was being denied to them. coming to shooting ratios for TV program would mean shooting film would be expensive. look at this way that shooting digital creates 5 times for more footage and one editor is just not able to do justice by watching the rushes. he has to hire more people in the editorial team. and naturally, manpower is more expensive in west. So it balances out. regards
  8. After 6 years hiatus Super16 makes a comeback in British TV industry. Super 16 originated material will be accepted for broadcast. http://www.screendaily.com/territories/uk-ireland/uk-tv-to-allow-super-16-for-hd/5062821.article?blocktitle=MORE-TOP-NEWS&contentID=40294
  9. re-opening of a processing lab in these times when everything is going digital is a welcome sign. the other day I received an email from a young australian filmmaker who was asking me where could he get his s16 negatives for his short film processed. And then came the news that neglab re-opens. It will be great for younger filmmakers who want to work on celluloid to tell their stories.
  10. thanks Chris, I googled and found a vimeo video. honestly though I wanted to see it being projected on a wall and how it looked. Maybe a link will pop up in few days. never know. :-) cheers

  12. This sounds awesome. would like to see a second generation iphone video of it somewhere. however, the link 'echo systems' seems to be broken - 404 not found.
  13. Hi there everyone, greetings! Just shot another experimental short. Basically, shooting a cyclist from a moving car. I was doing something like this for the first time. No special gears, just the camera on my lap or sometimes on the car seat/floor. This is a low res edit from iMovie so please bear. (640X360) Shot it on S16 kodak Vision 3 7203 stock. SD Tk,
  14. I am still trying to find out the ISO rating for intermediate stocks. However, the lab professionals have been kind enough to get me a rough idea for DI negative - ISO 25 and colour PRINT stock rated at ISO 5.
  15. http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/travel/a-new-trend-in-photography--using-film/2013/08/22/76486a16-08ec-11e3-b87c-476db8ac34cd_story.html Washington Post thinks using FILM is a new trend in Photography these days. LMAO! New trend? it was always there. maybe the younger generation in their 20s who may have never seen a film camera before in their life are now getting attracted to it. ALSO, FUJIFILM launches a new polaroid type camera called instax mini 90. and we are discussing film is dead?
  16. KODAK is coming out of bankruptcy. will be trading in 2 weeks time. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23774639
  17. few months back I saw Arricam LTs being sold on ebay for 10,000 and 25,000 dollars.
  18. you will get plenty of Arri LTs but of course used ones. This camera model is not very old so they will be relatively newer than other models. Film cameras are rugged and they don't age that fast.
  19. 90s films did look beautiful. so did the early 2000s. Seven, All the pretty horses, ...
  20. John, you are right! Panavision lenses are inherently warm. I have tested and felt that they are warmer by more than 200Kelvin. Zeiss lenses are bluish as you say or neutral without any bias towards any temperature.
  21. This movie has been shot on S16 format. I guess it has been cropped 2.35 in the DI post. check it out, looks good. Its a low budget Indie film.
  22. This ferrania news is awesome. Thanks for informing us. Just did some research and a whole lot of information. http://www.filmkorn.org/ferrania-the-new-old-hope-for-analogue-film/ http://www.apug.org/forums/forum390/120736-film-italy-ferrania-starting-production-2014-a.html
  23. Hi everybody greetings! my query is mainly to senior cinematographers here who have had their film releasing in theatres in the past and also by the sheer virtue of their experience. I had a nice long chat with a top exhibition theatre chain rep. He was telling me that a 35mm print life cycle is just 1 week. I wondered that if the print ran 4 shows a day for 7 days i.e. within 28 projections its life is over? I couldn't believe that because I grew up watching film in a very small town in India where the prints generally came after a run from A and B tier cities and yes there were scratches but not that bad. Can someone point me a rough ball park number as to when (number of runs) a print is considered a BAD print not suitable for exhibition. regards Prashantt
