  2. I'm one-hundred percent with you on that.
  3. Hi Josh, thanks a lot for your input. Of course it's expensive to shoot on film, don't get me wrong, yet I was positively surprised about the Developing & Telecine rates. Here in Austria, where I have shot most of my analog projects, the numbers for these services are nowhere near close to those in LA. But then again, there's an industry and probably much more demand in LA. But makes me feel positive about continuing to shoot on film.
  4. At least that's what it says on their student rates card: http://fotokem.com/resources/download/student/FotoKem_Student_Rates_2010.pdf
  5. Hello everyone, planning to shoot a short film on 35mm, yet Fotokem's (student) rates - or better: my math - got my slightly confused. What I need is "Developing" + "Digitize/Telecine to ProRes 422" (no proper Coloring Sit-In session needed since I'm planning to grade the digital files with a befriended colorist). Doing the math, it looks like this: "Develop Normal 35mm" – $0.09/feet –> $0.09 x 5400ft = $486 "Digitize to Client Drive (HD Source Tape)" – $125.00/hour –> $125.00 x 3hrs = $375 TOTAL = $861 This sounds incredibly cheap to me. Am I missing something here? I guess the "Digitize to Client Drive (HD Source Tape)" is not what I initially conceived as a Telecine to ProRes 422 files? Thanks in advance for the resolution, Alex
  6. Hello everyone, I'm sure many of you are familiar with Frame24 Ltd. in the UK. I was wondering if there's a similar company in the US that one could approach to buy 35mm short ends/re-cans for fair prices? If not, where would you go to buy about 4000ft of 35mm film? I'll obviously give Kodak a call, but I'm sure there are a few industry professionals (especially in LA) that sell properly stored short ends/re-cans locally. Thanks in advance for your help, Alex
  7. Hey James, would you be willing to sell your 400' Steadicam Magazine for the 535B on its own?
  8. New Price: $6000 or best offer. Shipping within US.
  9. I agree, yet owning a 35mm camera is pretty much the only way for me right now to convince the people behind the government's film funding programmes (I'm in Europe) that shooting film is actually within the budget since I pretty much save on most of the rental expenses (except things like lenses, filters, grip etc., which I rather rent for a specific project).
  10. Thanks Simon for sharing your thoughts, appreciate it!
  11. Yes, pretty much narrative stuff only. I guess I'm with you, the less stuff on the camera the better. Guess future shoots will tell if it makes sense to some or not. Let me know if you - as a cinematographer - could think of anything that's absolutely necessary and where - in the long - it might be better to just buy it instead of renting it. ;)
  12. Thanks Adrian for your thoughts! What do you think about a CCU-1 or an ICU, are they necessary? Basically I'm trying to assemble a solid kit and rent the accessories that are either too expensive to buy or just not worth purchasing considering won't be used much (a short film or two each year).
  13. Thanks Brian. And yes, I'll only rent lenses to be more flexible with selection. Couldn't afford to buy lenses atm. anyway.
  14. Hello everyone, just acquired a very basic Arri 535B Kit including body, 4 mags, extension viewfinder. I'm wondering what accessories I should rather buy as opposed to rent on future budgets? Does it make sense to buy batteries + charger, cables, ground glass etc. if I only use the camera on very few shoots? Keep in mind that I mostly direct and usually hire DPs. Owning a 35mm camera solely serves the purpose of keeping expenses to a minimum and being able to shoot on film. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your help, Alex

  16. Hey there, since I have 4 (quite heavy) cases containing film equipment (camera, mags + accessories) I wonder if you know of any good but affordable carriers in order to ship it from the US to Europe? Any help is much appreciated!

  20. Just wondering how much a Moviecam Steadymag is worth nowadays?! Thanks, Alex
  21. Thanks everyone for the insights. Now, returning to my initial post, I'm wondering if any "bigger productions" (indie or studio features) are using any of these techniques or if they're nowadays mainly used by smaller productions and celluloid-afficionados?
