  1. Since this is such a low-speed reversal stock, for best grain reproduction does anyone suggest I shoot this in daylight without a filter, metered at 64 ASA, and color-correct in telecine? I've been told to avoid dark blue skies, since if exaggerates grain. Is that true, also? Thanks for any comments -- I haven't shot reversal Super-8 in a loooong time... Timothy Gassen
  2. Many thanks -- I forgot to search for other similar topics before posting mine!
  3. Hi all, I'm finishing a new director's reel -- and like many items related to attracting representation and producers -- I'm getting a really wide range of opinions from other professionals on what makes an effective director's reel. There aren't any real right or wrong answers -- as long as it gets attention and meetings -- but what do you (other directors or producers) think makes or breaks a director's reel? Right now my new DVD reel is 6:30, with short segments of dramatic scenes and some title sequence shots; with two full scenes and a 9 minute short included as separate clips just in case more is wanted. I think I'll cut it down below 5 minutes -- but it's so hard to get anyone to look at anything, so who knows if it matters? If anyone has links to what they think are good director's reels, please post them, too. Thanks! Timothy Gassen
  4. Hi all, I've had great results shooting negative Super-8 in all its different stocks for video transfer. But now I have a pile of the Ektachrome 64T reversal stock to try -- so I was looking for opinions from those who have actually shot with this stock: what do you like best about it, what is it worst at, how do you compare its color and grain to other stocks, etc? Any and all thoughts are welcome from those who have used it! Many thanks, Timothy Gassen www.TucsonFilm.com
  5. Hi, I have a couple unusual telecine needs & questions: I have 20-year old cut 35mm negative A/B rolls. I once had a 35mm print, but it is missing (along with the timing sheets from the A/B rolls). So I was wondering if I can have the A/B rolls transferred to video? I have heard that, unlike an optical printer which the rolls were designed for, the traditional telecine won't transfer the cut negs smoothly. True? I don't want to have to strike another print just to transfer to video, and I don't have the timing sheets for fades/dissolves anyway! Also, I'd like to transfer some original fullcoat mag track in interlcok for better sound quality. Of original material, all I found was a 16mm fullcoat mix (though I do have the separate 35mm optical track)! I also want to transfer some positive 16m prints along with their mag track in interlock -- any telecine recommendation for the west coast/ LA? Thanks for any help! :)
  6. Thank you so much for the info! Yes, the 6008 should operate at other frame rates, but this seller says he's only used 24 and 80 fps, so that's all he knows from a film test. I'm curious, how much more would a 7008 be worth? Is there really that much of a difference between the 2 models? Thanks again for any info!
  7. OK, so I have been offered by a seller a BEAULIEU 6008 PRO (non-sync model) for @$500 (US). It has the Schneider-Kreuznach 6-70mm lens. Can anyone give me your opinions -- is this camera worth this price? According to the owner, it has shot film recently, and will operate at 24 fps & 80 fps -- but with no other guarantees. I would love to find one with the sync card, or find a sync card for a non-sync model -- do 24 fps Beaulieu sync cards ever pop up for sale? Any and all advice is welcome...
  8. Ahh, now I see in a manual that while the user can pick either 24 or 25 fps, only one of those can be the crystal sync speed -- and that is determined by which version of the card you have. Can 25fps be transferred via telecine to NTSC, or can it only go to PAL? I see the 25fps crystal cams more often on eBay, but not the 24fps versions... I'm veering from my first intent, though, which was to get at least one of my Chinon Pacific 12SMRs running again! Thanks again for everyone's help!
  9. Yes, the selling/buying trends on eBay can be bizarre! But $300 seems very low for this camera by any means! BTW, I thought the crystal sync card allowed the user to select 24 or 25fps? For these cams are there different kinds of sync/constant frame rate cards or modules?
  10. Many thanks for the repair leads, everyone. I should mention that I'm in Arizona, so West Coast repair options seem more feasible...although I don't think I have much choice! If I can find ANYONE to repair these Chinons I will be amazed... Thanks for any other leads, or advice on the relative worth of a BEAULIEU 6008 PRO...
  11. Hi all, For years I've gotten great results with a couple Chinon Pacific 12SMR Super-8 cameras. Negative super-8 stock transferred to video is fabulous with them, and reversal B&W is some of my favorite shot... But these guys are now at least 25 years old, and this past year the shutters started to stutter, then fire intermittently, then stop altogether. These things have never been serviced, so perhaps its just a lubrication maintenance issue, or a belt, or...? Anyway, does anyone know where I can seek repair for them? Also, if they are a lost cause and I need to seek a replacement -- does anyone have opinions about the BEAULIEU 6008 PRO camera? What price range should it be in if it has crystal sync? Any other similar cams worth hunting for? Sorry for all the questions on my very first post! ;) Thanks for any help!
