ah ok. ah ok. Yeah I meant more broadly what is push-processing, but really the words "rating 100 ASA film at 250 ASA with a 1-stop push, so the resulting processed negative was only about 1/3-stop "thin"" contain a lot of information I don't yet understand. It may be time to take a course. Though many googled questions come right back to discussions on cinematography.com ! great site!

From the December issue of AC the article "A Mid-Century Affair" by Iain Stasukevich: "...He lit most of Carol at or around T2.8, with 'shadow detail 2.5-3 stops below 18% gray, and highlights within 2 tops over.'" ________________________________________________________________________ Can someone explain precisely what is meant by this? Is it just saying that there are lots of details to be seen in quite dark areas? My understanding of gray scale is quite a new study, so what are the various things being expressed about the process of using super 16mm, and lighting here? Where on the gray scale might some scenes in the Godfather part 1 be found, say the scene in the study where Michael Corleone asks his mom about losing one's family? (Mr Coppola apparently was nervous about how dark the shot was) thanks!

I'm doing color correction on Final Cut Pro X and after 2 hours, suddenly everything changed and all the time line content is completely messed up...orange and blown out unusable poop. I don't even know where to begin the 1000 hours of trying to fix and learn. If someone knows FCPX please help. I did buy Pixel Film Studios Toolbox so I could change the aspect ratio

Dave .. BM have come out with a pretty cheap monitor.. called video assist .. or something like that.. thats about $600.. Ive seen it only at a trade show.. but couldn't handle it .. but it looks good .. how they have done it so cheaply I dont know.. but any monitor you buy I would advise you to get it up and running with your own camera and see how it is off axis etc.. _________________________________________________________________________________________ thanks! i'll check it.

i need to fly in from the middle of the room on my little mini "steadicam", about 6 feet to the door, where a character will crack it open and smile like a maniac. i'd like to avoid being out of focus until arriving at the final mark in front of the door. i have no fancy FFocus, BUT what if i videoed in deep focus, deep enough to have a few feet DOF? Wouldn't i need to add a certain amount more light, then close the iris a certain amount to keep the continuity of lighting between these shots and the other shots not in deep focus? First of all, is this correct reasoning? If yes, i can be in focus the whole journey to the door, where of course i'd rather rack focus if i had the tools. If i'm right, how can i use my new sekonic L-478D meter to help me measure how much more light, etc? thanks!

Need one. Just using a Canon Rebel T3i but eventually will buy another... One day if need be I'll get a red, but it's necessary only to have t3i now. Suggestions for a monitor under $1000 ? Evaluating focus, having focus help points, zebras, and other helpful features is necessary. Also being helpful when I eventually move to another cam, probably a full frame DSLR Thanks!

Red marks in green screens

Ah to create the relative movement between camera and objects you'd expect to see in reality? Great piece on Dick Pope BSC, btw. Just realized you must be that Phil Rhodes. -
Hello wizards, I wonder what are these marks? Little x's. What is their function?

I have the rebel t3i and im running magic lantern. Can anyone tell me: I'm afraid to reformat becuz it's not clear. If I press Q, will that reformat without deleting ML? Can someone describe what I should see on the screen immediately after I press Q? Merci

Thanks. This is interesting. Gotta check into it

and the operator was "well, I signaled the dolly grip to stop because I knew we were going to get flared otherwise" -
Do directors and/or DPs ever consult with operators on moves or composition? After all I imagine operators must have a very good feel for it after years of experience

I had put Magic Lantern on the camera, and I was unsure whether reformatting the card would erase it. I've read lotsa folks pressed "Q" thinking that's what avoids erasing ML when reformatting, as it seems the camera instructs, so I hesitate to press Q. Also, what is FAT16 and FAT32,and how do I evaluate which if those my t3i's in? Can't I just yell at the camera to work? -
