  1. Pretty much what Jay said. Pulling of transitional illusions like that isn't so much making sure every detail in the frame cuts, just the things the eyes focus on the most. A giant cloud in the center of the frame would qualify as that. Another way of pulling off stuff like that is using momentum in the frame to carry the viewer into the next shot.
  2. This was exactly what I was searching for, thank you. Know if they have any plans to release one capable of 35mm scans?
  3. I've seen multiple services that will take your 8, 16, and 35mm reels and convert them to digital video in a variety of resolutions and so on, but has a device been put out for that will do anything similar to the job those services promise? I'm assuming that wouldn't be cheap if it exists. After a Google search I see tons of results for still versions of these hardware converters which makes me think somewhere out there it exists for motion as well.
  4. What mount is the lens? And does it have an SDI out? I've never personally worked with one.
  5. I understand that moving forward, a digital camera that isn't 4k or higher loses its punch. But how do you guys like the image and functionality of the F900 for something like a short narrative in 2016? I know parts of the Star Wars prequels were shot on the camera, which looked pretty nice. Very cheap right now at only $2000
  6. Was thinking of getting into collecting 35mm reels of movies. Does anyone here have experience in that? If so, what are some cool picks from your collection? As far as purchasing them, is there a place one can search (other than eBay) to see whats up for sale (similar to Discogs)?
  7. Yeah I was about to say that even "regular" viewers who saw The Hobbit were put off by the 48fps. The phrase "soap opera" kept being used.
  8. I know this questions is splitting hairs, but is anyone going to worry about the difference between 23.978 and 23.976 if there's a difference between software/systems?
  9. Haha, yeah someday. What are some sub $5k cameras (used market value) that internally record to at least 422 out the box?
  10. Could you give just a slight elaboration on each of those shortcomings if you have the time? I agree that certain things are lacking in those, but I just want to see if the critique I have of my own work aligns with the general consensus so I can feel on the right track.
  11. I recently got a camera with healthy dynamic range (Sony F3) and have been shooting 422 with external drive. Sometimes, getting the thing out for a quick shoot of something can be a hassle. I'm considering purchasing some SxS cards to internally shoot 4:2:0. Does chroma subsampling affect anything more than image flexibility in post? If I go down to 4:2:0 will the current dynamic range I have been shooting with take a hit? What else can that number affect? Thanks for reading.
  12. So just shot my first short with the PMW F3. I'm completely new to a camera designed for video (as opposed to DSLR) and was wondering if I was doing anything glaringly wrong as far as dealing with exposure, shutter, s-log, etc. Recorded to a Atomos Samurai Blade in 422 HQ, final render is in 720p (was never concerned with big resolutions on YT) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_weSRRwGRX4 Thanks for your thoughts.
  13. Sensor is Super35. And yes please send over some samples of the Foton lens. If possible, could you give side-by-sides of the Foton up against a more modern lens? Thanks for the help.
  14. Title says it all. Now that I have a camera I've been looking in to utilizing the mount. Keep in mind, I am not expecting anything close to the quality of a Zeiss or Cooke, only want the functionality (aperture ring, metal casing, etc). Thanks in advance.
  15. Something that's been interesting to me is how cinema grade cameras are cheaper than ever. Maybe write about various releases of the digital age and how they've shaped the prices on the market today. How we went from an HD 4:4:4 camera costing a house to the RED One costing a used car. Could even throw in the impact the 2008 recession had on this progress. Would love to read something like that.
  16. You could try getting in contact with a Gobelins student https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6ZmMjMdrqs
  17. Was looking around old Pokemon promos and saw many shots like this How exactly is this wide angle dollhouse look achieved? I was going to say just a wide angle lens but everything looks so close together like a long zoom lens. Are they putting a fisheye at the end of a telephoto or something? As always, thanks for reading.
  18. Those images are VERY helpful, thank you. Would you happen to have 16-18mm shots? for Super35, sorry for not mentioning earlier.
  19. Cannot make up my mind so I thought you guys would have some nice input. I already have a 35/50/85 set of prime cine lenses. I want to get wider but not sure HOW wide I need. Is 16mm TOO wide or 24mm too close to 35mm to make a difference? Does anyone have any sample pictures? Thanks. I was considering a 135mm cine prime but the majority of my shoots are in small indoor areas where space is somewhat scarce.
  20. Wasn't exactly sure where something like this goes but I went with general. So with audio, vinyl has been having a resurgence because of its lossless sound quality in contrast to MP3. While not technically superior, Super 8mm has found its place due to various elements that give it a distinctive "look" To you, does VHS tape quality (shooting or viewing) have any elements that makes it stand out in a positive way from DVD or Blu Ray? Whether it be coloration of the sound, color tones, anything? Love to hear your thoughts, thanks.
