    David,

This looks great. May I ask how you handled the sync portions and where you had your processing, scan and color correction done?

    Thanks,

    Aaron

thanks! The processing and scan was done at metropolis post in NYC.

Our mixer had Stephanie lavd up all times and a mic hidden near the register. After about 10 seconds of rolling the audio would get out of line but our post mixer was able to line it up.

    Hope that helps!

  4. hey everyone!

Wanted to share a short film I recently shot about a fishing shop that has been in San Fransisco for over 60 years. Shot this on a Bolex Rex 5 with a set of Switar primes (10, 25, 75) on Kodak 250D.

We pushed the stock a stop. Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching!

  5. I was saddened to hear of the loss ff Jesse Chambless of Chambless Cine Equipment. I always had a great experience when dealing with Jesse for all of my Bolex needs throughout the years.

Posting this here for anyone who hasn't heard of the news. RIP Jesse

Kern made both Switars and Pizars. The Pizars were a cheaper option, usually 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a similar focal length Switar, but not as cheap as the Yvar range, which were mostly simple triplets and cheaper again.

I don’t know exactly what corners were cut to make Pizars cheaper. The f/1.5 25mm Pizar has pretty much the same 6 element optical formula as the f/1.4 25mm Switar, so maybe they used lower grade glass, or reduced tolerances. Originally it was labelled a Switar (the f/1.5 version, which was cheaper than the f/1.4) but sometime after reflex cameras were introduced it was re-labelled Pizar and only available as an RX option.

The 50mm Pizar is a different design to the Switar, 5 elements instead of 6, and a bit slower at f/1.8.

The  image quality is still pretty good as far as I can tell, but I’ve never seen a side by side comparison. Unless you’re fastidious about getting the best image possible with a Bolex (in which case maybe sell a kidney and go for the later pre-set versions), I think I’d be happy with a Pizar.

    thanks for the information, Dom!

Jean-Louis would know definitively (I’ve never done it) but I think you could convert a 16M to reflex using parts from an Rex 4 since they share the same basic body and mechanism plate. However in a 16M the shutter is fixed to the mechanism plate rather than to the turret front as in a Rex model, so you can’t just swap fronts over, the M shutter needs to be removed first. There may be other incompatibilities I’m not aware of.

The other option is to swap the good motor from the M to the Rex (the motors are compatible if the M serial number is beyond 203,000), but that requires a little more disassembly.

Either way, best to get a tech to do it.

If the tech has motors in their parts inventory it can be replaced, but Bolex International stopped selling spring motors a few years ago, so those parts are scarce now. Repairing a broken spring motor is pretty difficult and usually not possible (for me at least!) but it depends on what’s damaged. Do you know if your tech repaired it or replaced it? Be good to know someone who can repair a broken one.

    Hi Dom,

He had a spare motor that he replaced it with.
