  1. Hi Everyone!

I am selling my Preston FIZ3 3 channel remote focus kit. I have owned this for the past couple of years. And it has always been used only by myself, It has never been dry hired. It has worked flawlessly through that time and I have never had an issue with this reliable kit.

I purchased this as a Preston FIZ II Kit, but upgraded it to the FIZ3 handset and also sent the MDR back to PCS to get the Blue dot G4 upgrade and also to be serviced. (I can provide the receipt if needed)

The Handset is 1 1/2 years old and also the Heden M21VE-L motor is only 2 years old as well. All the other equipment is a bit older but still works perfectly, as I have always taken great care of this kit.

Im Looking for $17,000 USD but I am also open to reasonable offers.

  2. Just thought id let you know there is a much cheaper option. It is the redrock micro tape. It is selling for $795usd on bhphoto

    https://shop.redrockmicro.com/product/microtape-sonar-rangefinder/

I own a cinetape and it is flawless and always reliable. Tho it was not cheap.

I have worked with the redrock microtape before and it is not as good as a cinetape. But it does the same job, and for the price difference it is worth buying if you cant afford to spend $10,000.

The main issues i found with the microremote was that:

the sonar spread was a bit to wide so you would often get unwanted readings from objects you did not want. Even after panning the microremote away from the unwanted objects.

Also the readout screen can be hard to see in day light (reflections) and also you cant move it as it is based on the microtape it self

But for this being less than a 1/10th of the price you cant go wrong and 90% it will help you out. So just have it in your kit bag for the times you need it.

  3. Hi David,

Cinetapes are great tools but you cant always rely on them. For starters rig it off a Noga arm and have it sitting just above the mattbox. Be aware you can get false reading from things like door frames, other actors in shot etc. so alway make sure you still get you measurements with a measuring tape and then you will know what numbers to ignore. they take a while to get use to but once you understand what to look for and how to use it proaply they are awesome!

  4. So do they just leave the MDR on local then when the hand unit is away from them? Because I can imagine the DP or operator would want to constantly adjust focus as marks shift around while lighting.

I normaly keep the handset on me, i will always set the focus to where the subject will be. And i keep and ear out if the DP wants me to adjust the focus while he is lighting. Tho if i have to go away from set to the bathroom or craft table, i will leave the handset with my 2ndAC. There will allways be either myself or a 2ndAC within earshot of the DP at all times. Thats what i do and it works well.

  5. Hi, i use the blackrapid rs-4 strap. It will change your life! I have had all sorts from heden carats to prestons hanging off my shoulder and you can wear it all day and you hardly notice it is there. Also it has lock offs so you can lock it to your side and bend over and it will not swing in front of you. Really it is worth its wait in gold.
