1. That would fit in with the CNN article regarding the AD. It seems to be the common factor in incidents of various kinds, a number of things coming together resulting in fatal consequences.
2. There seem to be aspects of the AD's regard towards safety, which could result in an incident/accident was just waiting to happen. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/24/entertainment/rust-shooting-assistant-director-halls-complaints/index.html I haven't come across a source for that either, only the Patrick Cooper message.
3. Having directed a film that involved the use of a number of guns, I'm aware of the craziness that can happen when they're around. In this case, the focus puller - gun owner, after about 6 misfires of the blanks in the prop gun, suggested that he would stand in for the victim actor and the armourer would stand in for the executioner and they would use a live round with a bullet. Needless to say, this crazy idea was stopped in its tracks. BTW A blank worked on the 7th attempt.
4. Just to add, I gather it's possible to be seriously injured or even killed by a blank round. Material does come out when they're fired and at a close distance this can be fatal. Even the blast can kill, which happened when an actor put a pistol to his head, while playing around at suicide and pulled the trigger.
5. According to the NY times & LA Times there were 2 other discharge incidents reported on the BBC News Site:
6. Overall impression, from the outside, is that she wasn't on top of things, it's a job that needs tight controls in place and with guns around there can be a red mist that surrounds them, like letting off fireworks. Being a western, there might've been a lot more guns around than on her previous outing in the job.
7. Regarding her experience, I gather that her father was a Hollywood gun expert and had taught her about guns on films. She had apparently had been armourer on a Nicholas Cage film "The Old Way". However, there seems to have been a breakdown in safety procedures and perhaps an overly relaxed culture on this production may have been a factor causing the incident. If her age, etc, was a factor in the mix may be revealed in the investigation. Certainly, having crewmembers travel 50 miles from and to their accommodation would seem to indicate a production cutting every corner possible on costs.
8. These has some information: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-59005500 https://deadline.com/2021/10/female-crewmember-dies-on-new-mexico-set-of-alec-baldwin-film-rust-1234860416/
9. The third Lightworks V2022.1 beta is now available for download https://forum.lwks.com/threads/new-lightworks-beta-version-2022-1-revision-130972-now-available-on-windows-linux-and-mac.247009/ This adds the ability to search for "Images" within the Search panel and has a number of fixes.
10. The master shot may not be a wide shot, it's a long one (timewise) that captures all or most of the action in a scene. Often it is a wide shot, but it can be more complex than that, Spielberg is a director who can have fluid master shots (not always involving camera movement).
11. Just bear in mind that vaccination doesn't give 100% protection, same as the flu vaccine, it greatly reduces the chances of you getting seriously ill and hospitalized, but it's still possible to become ill. If working in at close quarters, in confined spaces or areas with poor ventilation, you should wear a mask. You may also have to regularly change the mask, especially, if you're speaking loudly, the single use ones tend to become clogged and unpleasant after two or three hours. Fortunately, we don't need to wear full PPE (unless filming on a COVID ward), getting a filling done these days involves the dentist in the full gear and sounding like Darth Vader. Pulling open the folds in the masks makes breathing easier.
12. The 2nd Lightworks V2022.1 beta, Revision 130892, is available for download. https://forum.lwks.com/threads/new-lightworks-beta-version-2022-1-revision-130892-now-available-on-windows-linux-and-mac.246921/#post-248086 This has added the ability to switch between abbreviated and non-abbreviated track names on the timeline appearance panel. Also, there's an update to the latest Blackmagic RAW SDK (2.2) and various fixes. A new feature on the website is a weekly blog called Editing Insights, which addresses subjects useful to new users and even some not so new ones: https://lwks.com/blog/ This also includes a weekly short video on an aspect of editing with Lightworks.
13. It came in two versions, low band and high band, the former was for industrial/ non broadcast use and the latter was used for broadcast, generally news using ENG. Sound recordists could develop back problems from carrying the portable VTR.
14. I assume that's your ground glass that has the fibre on it, since you can't see the actual gate through the viewfinder.
15. Letraset was a common method before the days of computer graphics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letraset Before dry transfer I guess they would be done by hand.
16. That's really comparing apples and oranges, Quad was a broadcast VTR format with a quality close to that of live TV, while state of art VHS is no where near that. Preservation is an issue with both. http://susanetheridge.com/crisis-in-videotape-preservation/
17. Beta testing on the Lightworks Beta Version 2022.1 has started and is now available to download. https://forum.lwks.com/threads/new-lightworks-beta-version-2022-1-revision-130733-now-available-on-windows-linux-and-mac.246832/ Features include: Support For OpenFX Plugins (Lightworks Pro Only) V2022.1 comes with OpenFX support across all three operating systems. This is an important update to the entire FX engine and opens up an entire world of FX possibilities. OpenFX is an open standard for visual effects plugins and allows plugins written to the standard to work within this new version of Lightworks. Below is a list of some of the bigger names Lightworks have tested against and support: NewBlue Version 7.8.210803 (TotalFX, Titler Pro, Elements, Transitions, Filters, Stylizers and Essentials) Windows and Mac Only Boris FX version 2021.5 (Continuum and Title Studio) Windows and Mac Only Boris FX version 2021.5 (Sapphire) Maxon Version 14.0.4 (Magic Bullet Looks) Windows and Mac Only There are some current limitations and known issues which we hope to have resolved during this Beta cycle. 18. It's been announced today on CML that Geoff Boyle passed away today in Zoetermeer, NL after a long battle with cancer. RIP
19. You can get great images on 50D, I used to shoot commercials on it. Even with that you might want to use ND 0.9, so that you're not at f16 on a sunny day.
20. Yes, Geoff has put many years of effort into supporting the cinematography community through CML and his very direct approach to the profession and the tools used to create moving images is memorable.
21. From what I remember, there was a template that you could use, so by cutting around it, with the gel filter held between the two halves, you got the correct size. I kept the protective tissue on the gel while doing so, so it wouldn't be damaged. I just used sharp scissors.
22. Note, I'm not implying you throw the camera and lens into the back of a car, the camera case I mentioned has high density foam that supports the camera and holds it in place, so that the camera is suspended within the foam. The ENG camera's are usually in a soft case (Eg Porta-Brace), although some are in a metal case similar to the Aaton.
23. It was pretty common to keep the zoom lens on the Aaton in a ready to shoot rigidized metal case when driving in a car on documentaries. Being able to quickly set up a shot was a factor in this. The weak point in the Aaton appeared to the the screws holding the top handle to the camera. The threads could wear out. especially if you had to regularly switch between standard 16 and super 16. Regarding 2/3" ENG cameras they always traveled with the lens in a car. They were often carried on as hand luggage on airliners wit the lens still fitted by news crews. I've never seen one traveling in a car without the lens on everyday TV productions, dramas are different because you've got camera assistants.
24. The only video tape format I've heard of being able to be physically joined, so as to have a usable edit is 2 inch Quad. No doubt, somewhere, there has been a video tape format that runs at a high enough linear speed in order to this, but it hasn't lasted.
