  1. Too bad they would not upgrade the scanner. Looks good. I love the old trains. Do you have any more plans for train films Tyler.
  2. If I had a decent scanner, I'd scan all those archive films for free for the special collection libraries and museums...as long as I had an interest in acquiring the scan for my film Archive. But as soon as the libraries / archives hear they have to share the scans with me for noncommercial use, they won't go for it. Archives are generally and almost always shit to deal with. Very greedy bastards. And it is not just this example. They won't share decent res copies of what they already have in their collection. These institutions are for preserving and sharing history. But greed always has its say. This is why humans can't be good communists like ants or bees can...greed! To be a good communist you have to be selfless. Humans can't do it! Really, my ultimate goal instead of getting free scans from someone else's film would be to acquire hi-res scans of films...and not having to deal with and scan the actual film itself. Sure, you are not going to get them for free, but say for a nominal fee. I'd be very happy just dealing with hi-grade scans and not having to handle physical film anymore. To be a good film archivist you need to handle film. By now I've handled enough film to satisfy me educational needs. Although handling film is not the same as scanning film. That is an entirely different part of the educational process. So, the scanning education would be lacking if one only dealt in scans and never handled the physical film. I model my Archive after the old Getty Museum Open Content Archive. Getty used to be fantastic to deal with, but Getty went downhill after a few years and tightened up with offering free hi-res material. 'Pig in a Poke' 16mm eBay film lot. Fair Use
  3. A while back they had a ScanStation Personal on sale at eBay for pretty cheap. Can't remember, maybe $20k - $25? Dunno. Anyway, too bad you couldn't get it Tyler. I thought the big boy ScanStation was $125K. They must have gone up a lot to hit $197K. You would think this market is hitting its peak somewhat. Or do the scanning companies have lots more headroom for price hikes?
  4. Thanks Dan, great points. What is involved in cleaning the PTR rollers? Is it a big job? I wonder how they hold up over time when it comes to deterioration. Maybe not that big a deal unless replacements become unobtainable and scanner won't run without them. Do any other scanners use the PTR rollers to clean film before it is scanned?
  5. That is interesting about the Archives and the scan types they want. Do you do much timed scans Tyler? Do you solicit the Archives much for work Tyler? Or is it word of mouth?
  6. That is a good description of it, Dom. Being professionals, you would think they would know better. Unless they figure the audience does not care. A neighbor lady was watching it with me and did not notice it until I pointed it out. It is very distracting and sticks out like a sore thumb every time I see it. And I'm not watching the movie to nitpick the techniques, I'm just watching a movie for entertainment. The late Robby Müller used to talk about having technique and camera work invisible. That crew should listen to some of his old interviews. It is ugly camera work.
  7. Did anyone else notice that when they pulled focus in the film in a number of scenes the perspective of the scene changed in an ugly way. At first I thought they may have been trying to be artsy. But it happened here and there in the film for no reason, other than focus pulling. If you don't know what I'm talking about I will have to get a DVD from the library to break down to get some of the defective scenes. I watched the film on Blu-ray a couple nights ago. <><><><> 20x30 foot plan for 1943 victory garden. Selection from Daniel D. Teoli Jr. WW2 Rationing Archive Daniel D. 8. One of the highest priced 8mm home movies ever sold on eBay. Even surpasses all the 16mm record home movies I've seen sell on eBay, which range in the $1400 - $1600 per 400 foot or less size reel. The seller has some of the best films on eBay. But most are unaffordable unless you got deep pockets. What is more amazing is this film is 8mm, which usually brings very little. 8mm is generally just too low quality to do much with, unless it is of the highest historical importance, and you have no other choice. <><><><> Daniel D. 10. Upgraded and at $50K, what would be the benefits of the BM over the Lasergraphics Archivist? Doesn't the Lasergraphics offer better registration with broken sprockets than the BM could?
  11. When you run the scan through Phoenix, does it affect the resolution any? Are you basically getting back what you put in for res and file size, just cleaner? What formats do you import and export, generally speaking?
  12. Well, I always say don't put crap online. It can follow you forever. But that is your call. As an archivist, I like to see the process from beginning to end.
  13. Thanks Tyler. Sounds like no hope for BM to come out with an affordable scanner. AEO Light?? Terrible, that is what us Retroscan people have to use. OK, it works, but who wants to bother with it for thousands and thousands of films? Why doesn't FF fix their audio reader? Anything happening in the works? How do you use AEO Light? Overscan and crop down or scan the optical track separately and marry audio to the full scan? Fast way is overscan, but you lose res with cropping.
  14. Post cards are an interesting area of collection when it comes to documenting history. You see a lot of things that you never knew existed and are not easy to find photos of otherwise. Especially if you get RPPC. Back in the day people would have short runs of RPPC's printed and send them off to their family and friends. I've been working on scanning a collection of cards from Southern California beach areas going back to 1900. Here are some from 1911, the Ship Cafe in Venice, CA. <><><><> Daniel D. 15. Throughout the year I back up periodically to DVD or Blu-Ray optical disc. In January of the new year, I back up the previous year's material to DVD M-Disc or Blu-Ray M-Disc. If it is digital and important...put it on M-Disc. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Small Gauge Film Archive Daniel D. Teoli Jr. VHS Video Archive Daniel D. 17. I've got a few of them...in the film Archive. But they are not Hollywood productions. They are 16mm reels on how to shoot film or make movies. Some of them are how filmmaking was done for the nightly news. Others are on editing. I will have to find them to get the names. I've only been able to inventory about 55% of the film Archive so far. I still have maybe 1,600 reels to do. Here is one I have to scan called 'Constructing Reality...A Film on Filmmaking.' When / if I evet get a scanner, I will put it and the others online. eBay photos I also like films about projection...anything about filmmaking from back in the day interests me. I had 3+ feet of old American Cinematographer mags. Sadly, most of them got rained on from a leaky roof in the storage unit and were ruined. I was able to save a few inches of them, but I have not scanned as yet. There was lots of interesting time capsule film related material in them. Maybe 1970s or 1980s vintage. Too bad. I bought them all on a DVD for $6 from a film collector and broke them down. My favorite way to acquire historical material is high quality scans for cheap. But I seldom find anything like that. In my case I usually have to buy the material and make the scans myself. In any case, these projection films are very hard to get and pricey if they do come up for sale. So, I am happy with low-res...instead of no-res. <><><>> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Small Gauge Film Archive Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Advertising Archive Daniel D. 18. Nope, nothing. I used to be the family photog. Maybe starting at 8 or 9, taking photos at Christmas and holidays. That is what eventually got me interested in photography. We had flashbulbs then flashcubes on the old brownie back then. When I was maybe 14 a friend sold me a beat up (probably) stolen Minox spy camera for $12. I took some photos with it and was shocked to find out how $ it was to develop and print. So, I got into photo developing to try and save money. Then I moved up to a 35mm Kodak Retina I bought in a pawn shop. Over the years from various moves and storage lockers a lot of the early photos were lost. But if I find some, I will send a few in. Here is an early one I shot when I was 17 and just getting into photography more seriously. Los Angeles Diner 1971 Photo by Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
  19. Greta Garbo I don't have firsthand knowledge about this photo, but I'm guessing it was a carbro print. Carbro prints were used before they came up with the dye transfer process. Carbro prints were similar to dye transfer prints in the fact that they both used color separation transfers in registration to form the final full color image. 20. Have had Energizers and Duracell both leak. Lots of leaks, many new batteries just in storage. When I was young batteries leaked all the time. Then for decades they perfected batteries and they seldom if ever leaked. Now leaks are back all over the place. Looks like they need to reinvent the wheel. What about you...any leaks?
  21. "Sadly, most clients can't afford a full scene to scene/shot by shot restoration." What are the costs for full restorations? Are you talking frame by frame? Or do these software packages fix most problems without going frame by frame?
